Sometimes Colbert cracks me up. He is often flat and boring. But the show has it's moments.

growing up the colbert report and the daily show were really influential on my political development during the bush and early obama years...its really really sad to see where he is at now. i mean, he got a top notch gig for a comedian, and im really happy for him, he's probably making lots of $$$ which is awesome, and he gets to take the job of some folks who are legends and idols in his line of work, which is even more awesome.

but seeing his incredible political comedy totally neutered by prime time corporate TV and shaved down to a 5min monologue is a crushing blow to comedy.

late night TV is outdated...who actually wants to watch that shit? a short monolouge by an often unfunny comedian, followed by 30-40 min of that comedian interviewing random celebs about their movies? jay leno was not funny, johhny carson was only funny if youre a fat 1950s italian who wears overalls and calls women "toots", david letterman was not funny.

time to close the books on late night talk

Beg to differ. Carson was huge, hilarious, and irreplaceable. Letterman was very funny and the closest thing.

But I agree with your post in general.  I record Colbert and often watch only his monologue.  None of the others interest me at all.

We hear and read about who isn't funny all the time.

What is funny these days?

I often hit the sack after Colbert's monologue also. But I do disagree on some points,

I think Colbert is the better interviewer of the three, a very smart and well-read man. Culturally aware, too. But given many guests are there to pump something, the subjects are often boring.

But he is a big fan of Neil deGrasse Tyson and those interviews are often good. I thought his interview with Bolton last night was good. His questions resonated with "Are you fucking kidding me?" and he pressured him a quite a bit on Bolton's BS. It wasn't "Meet The Press", but damned close for a late night talk show. His incredulousness is obvious. I don't think Fallon or Kimmel could've come close.

Also, I give him credit for being ahead of the pack on taking on "The Occupant". While all hesitated a bit at first, Colbert was one of the first to just throw down and say "I'm done pretending. This guy's a total ass and I'm calling him on it." That's why he took off in the ratings. He did some trail breaking in that way.

I agree he did a good job on the Bolton interview. But I don't think he is that great of an interviewer generally.

I liked him a lot better on the Colbert Report, playing a character.  He was brilliant with that.

Imo the late night interview is to shuck whatever the guest is pushing in a limited amount of time (unless it's only one guest for the hour) hard to be cutting edge in that manner . On the other hand I'm not a fan of Stern but since I joined Facebook I'm seen parts of interviews he has done , since he has long periods of time with a guest he really gets into subjects plus again not being a fan , I believe him to be a very good interviewer
