“After much listening, discussion, and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision not to build Black Rock City in 2020,” the statement, posted to the Burning Man Project website, reads in part. “Given the painful reality of COVID-19, one of the greatest global challenges of our lifetimes, we believe this is the right thing to do. Yes, we are heartbroken. We know you are too. In 2020 we need human connection and Immediacy more than ever. But public health and the well-being of our participants, staff, and neighbors in Nevada are our highest priorities.”
The 2020 event was set to take place in the Black Rock Desert of northern Nevada from Aug. 30 to Sept. 7. On April 1, Burning Man postponed registration for its main ticket sale, pointing to a possible date change or cancellation. The first round of Burning Man ticket sales happened last month, with 4,000 tickets priced at $1,400 sold during the March 18 “FOMO” ticket sale; 20,000 tickets priced at $475 each were set to be up for grabs during the main sale.
While Friday’s statement says Burning Man is “committed to providing refunds to those who need them,” it also urges Burners who already purchased tickets to consider donating that money back to the cause. “Whether you have already purchased a ticket, have been waiting for the Main Sale, or are simply supportive of our vision and mission — if you have the means, it is our sincerest hope that you will consider donating all or a portion of your ticket value, and/or making a tax-deductible donation to Burning Man Project,” the statement says. “This is going to be a tough year for us, as we know it will be for you, but we will get through it together.”

The real beauty of desert
The real beauty of desert living is that you can do pretty much whatever you want, whenever you want, without shelling out a small fortune to have do it once a year in some policed and fenced off area.

Know some Kidzz that attend
Know some Kidzz that attend every year and even got married there. They will be heartbroken for a while, and then get a couple tons of sand dumped in their yard to recreate the Playa, burn some stuff and wander around naked.
Probably save tons of Ca$h like that.
Lower environmental impact too.

So since I’m sitting here
So since I’m sitting here watching the 2019 Masters with nothing better to do I’ll expand instead of just being snarky.
It costs too much:
This one always cracks me up. Please raise your hand if you have thrown a week long party for 80,000 people in a place with no infrastructure, and where the nearest Home Depot is a 4 hour round trip drive away. All electricity, shade, water, food, and structures need to be brought in from scratch and built every year, and when they leave they really leave no trace. That means just about every shower, every time you wash dishes, every shit, and piss needs to be trucked out. That is for 80k people and thousands of staff that stay their for months to build, tear down, and then literally walk the square miles of desert in lines picking up every cigarette butt that got left behind.
Finally there is always the corrupt federal government and the state and local police squeezing the event for all it is worth. Back in the 90’s when it was 10k people the BLM charged something $10 a head for the week. Now they charge 10x that and demand all kinds of accommodation for their police force. BLM are total assholes if burningman wanted to strip mine the area they would be fine with that but throw a crazy party and they want their pound of flesh.
Yes they don’t provide anything for the people that come, and some of the founders are millionaires, but they guy who is probably the richest is the crazy porto john guy who took a risk on a crazy party in the desert and built the infrastructure to support it. From what I have heard he is a multimillionaire and good for him.
The org itself is a non profit now and all their finances are public. They don’t pay for bands but do the pour tons of money into the large scale art projects that get brought out and built every year.
Burningman is just a crazy party that traces it’s roots back to the pranksters, the diggers and the cacophony society. Barlow used to hang out back in the 90’s and then grew disillusioned with it because he felt it was too much effort for just a party and that all that energy should be focused on some positive social change. I don’t know the Dead fought that sentiment for most of their time as well. There is plenty of dark side to burningman too. The place is full of sexual predators, lot’s of stories of people running into the flames never to be heard from again, and I used to camp with some EMT’s who stay out there after the event and go searching in the desert for all the lost souls who decided to wander off. They found plenty of half starved people and a few corpses too. Finally yes the cops are assholes. They run undercover sting operations and it is one of the big reasons I stopped going. It is federal land so they even enforce no weed because of that - even though Nevada is legal.
At the end of the day there is nothing like a Grateful Dead concert and in a completely different way there is nothing like burningman. Truly the craziest, most unexpected party on earth.

I have no personal experience
I have no personal experience with Burning Man, and no desire to attend in the future. Nothing against it though. If I were in my 20s, I'd want to go at least once. It would have appealed to me as an opportunity to get very high on acid for a few days and enjoy the party, with minimal need for food and sleep. That isn't very appealing to me these days. Also, I like trees and the shade they provide. YMMV.

wow - haven't heard that name for a while.... I still have some flyers....
A friend was the editor of their newsletter and told us about some guy burning a statue on the beach near my house (Baker beach near the Richmond district)... we went and watched some crazy folks construct this wooden effigy and light it on fire. It fell apart. We might have even pulled on a rope...Distant memories.... The next year they were back but the Presidio cops shut the burn down. The next year or maybe later that same year (90? '91?), they the put the thing on a barge in the Marina and weren't supposed to burn it, but a ballast in a black light started a little blaze. I do remember that the barge started drifting out into the Bay before enough people hauled it back toward the pier. I know we pulled the ropes that time.
Then they started hauling that thing to the desert. I never went.

I went because I was told there would drag racing and machine guns, so I packed my 72 charger mostly with ammo, gas cans, canned chili and and ramen packs. Seacrest probably could have hung. The year was 1996. Yeah, it was a hoot.

The assholes actually have fully functioning art cars that they cruise around in. It is a common practice to ask art cars for a ride if you are walking around. The under cover cop car will say sure you can get in if you got something for me. If you share any drugs they bust you. Total scam for money. They drive you to some town 50 miles away where if you pay them you get to go.

Always have wanted to check it out, but just for a few Days. Endless techno and burning mattresses would not entice my presence for a whole Week.
So if I could ride a Chopper in and out, 3 days / nights would be just fine.
Friends with the Legendary Tuna Camp, so we could feast upon Desert Sushi / Sashimi and guzzle Polish Vodka.

I never went but thought it
I never went but thought it would have been kind of wild cool to see before it became such an 'influencer' thing and maybe lost its way a bit? As much as I love the road and road trips, maybe helicopter in for two days and a night and get TF outta there. Ha! But I guess that would be the epitome of the monied game that seems to rule it now. Maybe the organizers want to simply "officially" skip this year and the accompanying uneven fight with the feds over permitting and the new rules being placed on that potential approval (searching cars/persons en route and at entrances, etc. blah blah blah. That would seem to put a spotlight on the wrong things and a real damper (buzz kill) on the freedom aspects.
