I have to admit these 2 shows at RCMH have surprised me. Bob has been shining and the band is kicking ass. I almost regret not going. But the thought of trains and my foot killing me would have made it not feasible.

But no regrets. It's all on tape.

Is it me or is Don Was' bass non-existent?

it's you.

To me it seems Bob is having a kind of a renaissance.  I had basically tuned him out the last 7 or 8 years. Thought Furthur could bring it at times and Bob was a big part of that.  But he could also drain a Furthur show.  I could put up with the hit or miss of Bob, but then his voice just seemed to get worse and worse. I first tuned back into Mr. Weir this past summer streaming quite a few Dead & Co. shows. To say I was pleasantly surprised would be an understatement. Beautiful St. Stephens> Elevens, and lets not forget the Dark Stars. That got me linking to some of the Wolf Bros. stuff and again pleasantly surprised.  Just finished up watching the sneak peaks on youtube of the 4/2 an 4/3 Wolf Bros. Again pleasantly surprised.  The biggest difference for me is Bob's singing voice has returned.  I'm excited, sure as shit!

The above photos are all from Sunday night, April 3, 2022.

What's that saying?  Never miss a Sunday show?  This one delivered in aces.

My cousin George and I took the Metro North train down from Rye to Grand Central Station, which was a short walk through Midtown to Radio City, passing by the NBC headquarters at 30 Rockefeller Plaza on the way.

We got to our seats right as Bobby was wrapping up his debut of "She Knows What I'm Thinking."  Our seats were in Section 5, Row J, on the right side aisle, which put us right across the aisle and directly level with the soundboard, which was on Row J in Section 4.  The sound was phenomenal all night.  It seemed to me that the musicians were all playing more confidently than Saturday with the sound gremlins solved.  The show seemed to have more of a psychedelic x-factor too.  The first night, I had half-jokingly said "Where's the balloons" after the show (none were available).  Walking in on Sunday, you couldn't miss the nitrous vendors with fistfuls of balloons barking out "How many guys", and I even heard the unmistakable low and slowly stated "doooooooses" under the hiss of the nitrous tanks.  It was a nostalgic moment, harkening to the halcyon days of the Deadlots of yore.  I skipped partaking of either of those, but enjoyed copious amounts of cannabis edibles, vapes, and a steady supply of beers all night, so I was feeling pretty high all night.  It felt good to get in the groove for this one.

I recognized Fever right away.  I was there for the only GD version at the Capital Centre, and it was cool to see it again with the Wolfpack's string and horn accompaniment.  Jack Straw started off at an almost unrecognizable languorous pace, but eventually found it's bearings, with Jay Lane capably singing the Jerry parts, and Barry shining on the pedal steel.  Barry and Don Was were both demonstrably more present in the audio mix than Saturday.

Bobby then said "We're gonna do something we normally don't do.  Well, let's try something out.  How many of you want us to play the Ace album again?  (about 3/4 of the crowd raises their hands) OK, now how many would rather hear something else? (only a couple of hands go up).  Well, that went a whole lot better than I expected."  Then they were off into another run through the eight songs from Ace to finish out the first set, albeit with more dialed in sound and better stage presence.  This performance of "Walk In The Sunshine" was markedly better than the shambolic performance on Saturday. due to Brittany Spencer's more assertive vocal.  She brought down the house with "Looks Like Rain" again, which was good, if not quite as monumental as Saturday's version had been.  Don Was was really stretching the bottom on "Mexicali Blues" with the horns bringing the mariachi flavor.  Hearing "One More Saturday Night" on a Sunday night was fun, and it was a tight, rocking performance.  "Cassidy" was excellent, with a nice, extended improv jam with the Wolfpack pushing the band towards Free Jazz territory.

After some more liquid refreshments at intermission, "Mama Tried" hit the spot to open Set 2, with Tyler Childers voice perfectly suited for this Merle Haggard vehicle.  "Turn On Your Lovelight" was great to hear so early in the set instead of as a closer, as it kept the spirits and energy levels soaring.  Leading into a rapturous "Samson & Delilah", abetted magnificently by the gospel pipes of young Ms. Spencer, it was a double whammy of Sunday Show goodness.  Church was in session for the faithful.

The version of "Terrapin Station" that followed was one for the ages.  What a treat to see the whole Terrapin Suite performed with the Wolfpack augmenting the orchestral parts from the original album version.  It was a sublime moment.  Somewhere, Robert Hunter and Jerry Garcia were smiling.

John Mayer walked out on stage to no introduction, and with the Dead & Co. frontline of Chmenti, Weir, and Mayer on stage, the Vista Cruiser was pedal to the metal for the rest of the show. "Sugar Magnolia" continued the theme of set closing numbers appearing early in the set, and kept the energy high, with Jeff Chimenti playing some sweet lead runs.  "Scarlet Begonias" featured an excellent sequence of leads exchanged between Barry and John Boy,  "The Other One" galloped along at a lively pace, leading into a soulful and majestic "Morning Dew" before the "Sunshine Daydream" coda.

All the guests communed with the band for a fitting "Not Fade Away" encore that underscored the symbiotic relationship of the band and audience on this night, a special moment in time, where the stars aligned, and everything was just about exactly perfect.

Out in the streets, I folded comfortably into a convenient Uber ride back to my cousin's, happily worn out from a memorable two night run at the hallowed grounds of Radio City.  I'd gotten up on short sleep after Saturday's show to attend the Sunday morning service at my brother's church before riding the Hudson North line from Cold Spring down to Tarreytown where my cousin picked me up.  It was somewhat of a long strange trip, with a great visit with my oldest brother and his wife on Thursday night, a trip upstate with both my New York brothers on Friday to see some land my closer in age brother hopes to develop into a farm, and to make a pilgrimage the original Woodstock Festival site in Bethel, capped off by the Ace shows.  My head hit the pillow hard, as I slept in the stars, waking up refreshed for the flight back home to Seattle from JFK last night, where my staff had done a great job of managing my shop while I was away.

Mama, mama, many worlds I've come since I first left home.

Wow, great review Herbal Dave. Thank you!

Yes.  Thanks Dave.   Great review and glad you had a good time.

^^^ jiminey cricket (barf). Was able to Attend Both nights  Saturday was the best night imo. Sunday was bit clunky and then really clicked in second set. I feel JM really took away from the sound of the band. I have no idea what the draw is with him. Hes been in D&C for 7 years and he still sounded like he was new to the music, even sloppy and lost at times. Besides for Ace a second time, they played every big hit from the 70s that they play on D$C tour as well because thats the only thing JM is able to do, ill be it not that great. I was very surprised how little he added and how ppl went nuts for his nothing burger guitar solos  Saturday was an intense musical experience that reminded me of old ratdog which ive done tons and tons of. Ron carter drkstar eyes was phenomenal and brittany howard brought it and was very glad brittany was there a second night. Tyler childers was nothing special   Off to see bela fleck my bluegrass heart tonight

Great review Dave

Thanks, Dave, you really relayed it.

Oh shit that review was Dave's.

The way it just went on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on I woulda sworn it was Lance's.

Ras with the rare double burn. Nice work, dude.

:)

When the review is longer than the actual show, it just gotta be from Lance.

But wait, it appears Dave's givin him a run for the roses.

:)

boy what a gig

beautiful potato pictures

I use more paragraph breaks.

there were thousands of ballons outside the venue after the Saturday night shoe...maybe you exited the wrong door, Dave?
