Shows start tomorrow. I'm only going to the first one of four.
The last Dead-related Symphony show I attended might have been that Michael Tilson Thomas 1996 event at Davies Symphony Hall with Mickey, Phil, Bob and Vince.
Already a clusterfck figuring out transit, parking, food. Unless you live in DC or are hotel-ing it, Kennedy Center is a very inconvenient venue. Especially in crappy weather.
At this moment I don't know why I even bought tickets. I'm not a big Wolf Bros fan. Thought it might be something a little different.
We shall see.
Anyone else out there going?

Weir is in the process of
Weir is in the process of orchestrating about 20 Grateful Dead songs and adds “we might do a Dylan tune or two.” But rather than traditional orchestral pieces, he’s arranging with sections that will be open for the entire orchestra to improvise along with the band.
“It’s long been a thought that I’ve had in my head, it’d be nice if we could actually get a symphony orchestra to improvise,” Weir says. “We have numerous pieces where we have an indeterminate length of verses, or repeats of a given pattern, and we’re going to have the various sections improvise over them. That way a song will never be the same way twice.” The Wolfpack members will serve as section leaders, and Weir says the method for improvising is still being determined.
“It’s a little out there on the daring side, shall we say, but that’s where we go to find the fun,” Weir says. “And it may be that once the orchestra develops that ability and sees that they have the ability to take (music) to other places, who knows what might happen. This type of technique would work with Beethoven or with Mahler as well. I’m just trying to make the stuff I do meaningful.”

is this an extension of the marin symphony show he did years back? i went to that one and it was actually quite good, the first set was fully orchestrated with the full symphony and the second set was weir's band + select symphony members playing dead songs with the usual improvisation. it was pretty funny seeing all the season pass holders for the symphony hall who seemed to think they were just going to another night at the symphony hall without really realizing what they were getting themselves into.

Bobby's done this before, and
Bobby's done this before, and Warren did a Dead/Symphony thing too a few years back. I'm sure it would be a great night at the symphony, but I'm skeptical it will be a great 'dead show'; Doubtful they will take the music to any new places and from what I've heard of those previous efforts, it will all be a little "forced". Again, more interesting from a symphonic perspective than from a Dead perspective, IMHO. I mean, I wouldn't turn down a free ticket if it was local, but this isn't something I'd travel for. YMMV.

Personally, I'm dreading the traveling part. DC beltway sucks. Kennedy Center is tucked in a corner of the city near all the monuments and Federal buildings and there is no swift way to get there in rush hour. Luckily I just copped a dinner reservation at the semi-swanky restaurant in the building for convenience sake, so maybe it will turn out to be a romantic evening (which will quickly come to an end when we try to navigate out of there and drive safely home).
Show starts at 8 and is listed as 2 hrs 45 minutes.
Masks mandatory in the performance hall. That should be interesting to see.

Good thinking and that was my idea, too. I usually save and use my ccard points for such occasions, so we can indulge without having to worry about driving home.
However we are going camping and to a 3day festival this weekend so can't be away from the house/pets too much. (First year of the Ramble festival, only an hour away. Typical lineup: Keller, Leftover, Traveling McCoureys, Pink Talking Fish and a slew of bands I never heard of.) Unfortunately, a cold front is coming in and temps will drop into the low 40s at night so it might be a challenge to stay warm and comfortable during and after the music. Our little trailed has air conditioning but no heater. I reserved an electric spot at the nearby State Park campground so I can plug in an electric blanket.

I saw Warren and Colorado
I saw Warren and Colorado Symphony at Red Rocks sometime around 2016 and really liked it ... loved the way a tuba or some other classical instrument would be placed into a new arrangment for an entirely novel sonic approach. Perhaps Bobby will have figured out a way to have pushed the envelope further with the issue of integration of improv with all players on the stage.
Still, this always comes to mind whenever these sorts of collaborations materialize ...

You'd think this sort of setting would temper the show talkers, but no. Not to sound like a choosey beggar, but this was really getting to me the entire time last evening ... was hyper-tuned into the whole larger dynamic of "extraneous sound". Hoots and hollers were just as distracting. It all got me to thinking that maybe the pass the Gray Poupon crowd are on to something with their orthodoxy in such settings.

Well, the ride down during
Well, the ride down during rush hour was better than expected, thanks to my wife who ignored the Google directions. It only took us an hour and a half.
The only hitch was when we pulled into the parking garage, the lady said - "sorry my computer just went down and you'll have to back up." Which was impossible because there was already a line of cars behind us. She was actually trying to reboot her desktop computer by turning it off and on and repeatedly unplugging and replugging it in the wall (hadn't seen that done in years) and we waited and waited while everybody in line probably thought I was trying to pay with foreign currency or something. When we finally got thru I made her promise to tell everyone it wasn't my fault.
We got there by 430 so we had some time to kill.
We went thru the JFK exhibit and ended up in the VIP area with free food and drinks, which I could have crashed if I was on my own. Didn't see any band members meeting and greeting. There as a terrace outside where you could see the heart of DC.
Had a 6 o'clock dinner reservation at the fancy-dancy restaurant at Kennedy Center, which was nice, but waaaay overpriced for what I'm used to. I do have to say the prawn cocktail was exceptional. The Watergate complex is right next door and there were more power-broker types in there than hippies.

This was our first indoor
This was our first indoor music event in like three years, so I was happy to be up in a balcony. I hadn't been to the Kennedy Center for years.
It was a mask mandatory event, but I'd say only a third of the crowd was wearing them. The same amount of people were dressed for a symphony.
The orchestra started without the Wolfpack and started playing a medley of sorts. It sounded like the intro title sequence of a 1960s James Bond movie - kinda jazzy -- with whiffs of Terrapin and Brokedown Palace. The crowd roared when they recognized a tune. After a bit, the Wolf guys came out.

Seems like every rock star
Seems like every rock star has to do this type of deal. It sounds OK but it isn't really my type of thing, and I'm fairly sure I would have been annoyed by the crowd, but I'm also fairly sure that if I had been in the room it would have been cool enough overall.
Mainly, after watching some of this I'm still tripping on Jay Lane suddenly playing left handed. If I was there I think I would have been totally distracted by that, just because it's so completely bizarre for a veteran professional drummer to do that.
I'm sure there's a good reason. I've never been that impressed with his playing, maybe he wasn't anymore either.
More likely it's some physical issue, but it's something I've never seen before.
At this moment it's about 50-50 if I go to Reno in a couple of weeks to check out the Wolfies, maybe I'll find him at a 21 table and I can ask him about it.

The Wolf guys joined in but they just blended in with the rest of the orchestra. It was all about Bobby, and a little bit about the conductor next to him.
I when I say blended in, I mean I could hardly hear them at all. I mean, you could here the drums smashing every so often, but the piano and bass were lost in all the other instruments.
Every once in a while, you could hear a Bobby clang.
But basically the whole night was Bobby singing in front of a symphony. Which was cool.

My biggest complaint was that
My biggest complaint was that the lead guitar role was severely lacking. Whenever any of the orchestra, usually a trumpet player or a sax, played a Jerry line, the place would erupt.
That's what the crowd was seeking -- the Jerry guy. The crowd super-appreciated Bobby --- the vibe in the room was all love and "let's move" (it wasn't a really sit-down-all-night event, despite the serious environment), but there was no searing lead to get real psychedelic. It was more of a softer, warm, fuzzy thing.
It was symphonic in the sense of a movie soundtrack or the background to a musical play, not a midlevel Terrapin choir classical crescendo sort of sound. It was pleasant and colorful and even emotional, but not mind expanding.
It was Bobby singing along with an orchestra or more accurately, the orchestra trying to synch up with Weir. It was fun keying in on one player and watching him/her interpret Grateful Dead music. Those chello-ists got quite a workout.

Oh yes, my other complaint
Oh yes, my other complaint was the frigging continuous talkers. Worse than a Kimock show. These frigging people wouldn't shut up --- "it's a symphony for christsake. Were you raised ina barn?" Very distracting. More than once I wanted to toss the guy behind me over the balcony.
Surprisingly, there were a fair amount of "kids" in attendance looking just like we did - clogging the aisles, dancing their asses off to orchestrated Bobby of all things. By the end of the night a good portion of the floor audience moved toward the stage. Since I hadn't been to an indoor show in so long, it was very nostalgic to see spinners in the aisle tormenting the ushers. Clear the aisle, wait a minute, and the aisle is full.again. Back and forth all night.

With Loose Lucy of all things. Thank you (Bob) --- for a real good time.
So all-in-all a good way to spend an evening with a spouse. If I don't get covid -- I was in a crowded elevator for the first time in a looooong while and the line to get in the theater was a typical liquid mush of half-pushing, impatient hippies. Well, it was a "symphony" after all.
But isn't that the general way/issue with the Wolf Bros. all the time? They don't ever have a lead guitar role. IMO, in that and in other ways they're not a rock band, they're sort of an ensemble/chamber group that plays GD songs.
Sless on the pedal steel brings some of that, but the times I've listened to that band I don't notice a lot of soloing at all. The ones I have heard are mostly played by Mads Tolling or one of the horn players, and as good as Tolling is on violin, that ain't rock 'n roll.
