This isn't the new age of tracking down citizens with robotics. It was a freak situation, that the army base able to help out with, and ONLY because they had umpteen square miles of no one, BUT these armed men.

These planes could never be used in a city, or any other situation other then tracking down someone that was located in some desolate place.

I remember being outside of Freedom Hall in 1989 after the show, and the Disco Bus was in full swing. Dean was on top of it doing the most amazing dance moves that I later learned he had taught to Denny Terrio just before Saturday Night Fever came out.

Anyways, he was up there, and the cops showed up to close the party down. Dean didn't see them at first, but he hopped down off the bus and began to talk to them in that Neal Cassady "these earen't the droids your looking for" kind of way he had with authority figures. They ended up hanging out for a bit, and then Dean spun around, gave the Disco Bus people the thumbs up, and they started blaring "Macho Man".

Dean immediately dawned an Indian head dress, threw another dude a construction hat and another one some leather chaps and a vest, and then they joined the cops, already in costume, for what turned out to be a 30 minute retrospective of the Village People's hits.

I'll never forget it for as long as I remember it.

I'm all for robust debate and free expression. That's not what happened yesterday though. It was bullying pure and simple, and I bet I'm not the only one who cringed over Doob's meltdown rather than laughing at him over it. I understand that Schnee doesn't want to make this place into a nanny state. At the same time, allowing bullies to operate with impunity, as if their antics do nothing more than add to the entertainment value of this place, is bad policy imo.

Naturally she's not available, for a variety of reasons.

We are good friends though and I really value the relationship as it is. I'm trying to love unconditionally and just let it be. But I haven't felt this way about anyone in years...she alters my consciousness. I've been devoutly single and not looking for quite a long time, and was definitely not looking for this, nor did I see it coming. If I could turn it off, I would.

It's one of those situations where the more you get to know someone the more beautiful they become...the experience of seeing the inner beauty of a person, as opposed to a superficial attraction. I think she sees me more like a brother though, and I'm happy to be that for her, I just know it could go so much deeper if she wanted it to.

I once spoke to an adept about how I might recognize the love of my life, and this was the answer:

1. She would share my love of wild nature
2. She would share my spiritual outlook
3. I would surrender to her without hesitation

Check, check, check. I've not kept my feelings secret if you're wondering...

I go over and say "Dean, no one is taking my bananas but everyone is taking yours."

He's said "if they say no thanks, smile and say 'how 'bout now',... it's a sure shot kid, they will take your bananas".

I tried it an low and behold it worked! So even now when I offer someone something and they won't take it right off the bat I say "How 'bout now" and smile. Nine time out of ten, they take what ever I'm offering (I'm sure if I had Grateful Dean's smile, it would be ten out of ten).

I didn't get to hang with him that much but he always remembered me when we did.
He used to say "You and Me, we are Dean squared... we are greater than the sum of our parts".

I said "But Dean, one times one is two".

He said, keep thinking about it kid. You'll get it sooner or later".

Does the management (Peter Shapiro) really think that he could change the way people in the jam band community listen to music. Does he really think that people will magically stop using herbal products to enhance their musical experiences just because he makes it impossible for them to use them at his shows?

Anyone who partakes in herbal products should go out of their way to avoid Brooklyn Bowl. Unless you want to get busted or want to practice herbal sobriety. You can spend as much as you want on booze and get stupid crazy drunk...thats OK.

Brooklyn Bowl is a jam band venue. Herbal products are associated with the jam band scene. Most music venues figure out a way to tolerate herbal use in controlled ways.

Boycott Brooklyn Bowl!!!!!!...non-progressive!!!!!...repressive.... mean!!!!

So a friend of mine claims that he met three little grey alien types out near the mailbox the other day.

Woke up about 3-4 AM, heard some odd noises and walked out there with his dog. They were dressed in dark black and silver clothing, short, had fabric shoes like silk/cotton, and verbalized in what sounded like bird chirps.

There's more to the story... his dog didn't freak out, but sniffed in their direction, not barking. His wife is advising him to check into the looney bin.

I told him that they might not be 'Aliens' but rather some terrestrial variant of the "Wee Folk" -- leprechauns or faeries of some type, and to avoid telling the wife about it.

Anyone else run across these little critters lately? I think it's an unusual tale.

I knew what I was getting into, and I was completely prepared to be disappointed because of poor performance, but there is NO excuse for saying goodnight after just an hour, no matter WHO you are or if you don't have enough material, which was the point I long-windedly tried to make.

The legendary Al Green also performs just an hour and my reaction to him is exactly the same. I don't have a problem with how much the show cost, but as I said, even if it was free an hour is not professional, and even though SHE is not a pro, she is surrounded by them.

As for Neil expectations, I'm generally not a gamblin' man, but for me Neil is right below Jerry on my musical hero list so $35 down for even a small chance to see Neil sing a couple of songs was an easy bet to make. As it turned out, if the show had just been 20-30 minutes longer WITHOUT a Neil tune it still would have been a winning bet; if the show had been exactly the same WITH a couple, or even ONE Neil jewel at the end it would have been more than a double-down winner.

If you don't play you can't win, and with Neil getting along in years (and with the Bridge keeping him from playing more in the BA - he actually believes if he played more around home it would hurt Bridge attendence) I'm gonna' take my chances when they come.

BTW, David Bromberg is at the Little Fox tonight, but for me it's Will Bernard at the glorious closet - The Kuumbwa!

2/16/91 - Sonic Youth opening for Neil Young @ Buffalo War Memorial
- Ten minutes of sheer noise laced with F-bombs, and every second was awful. When I bolted to the hallways, they were packed with people whom had the same reaction as I.

8/97 - Beth Hart opening for Ratdog, Albany
- I was actually worried she was going to have a meltdown on stage. To be frank, she came across as a junkie who needed help. Of course, she could have been sober, but I truly felt sorry for Beth because she was clearly belittled by her demons.

8/2001 - Victoria Williams & Mark Olson @ Viking Hotel, Newport Folk Festival
- For anyone familiar with Victoria, she suffers from MS; which had clearly kicked in to the point it affected her badly. She was unable to sing complete verses, then went on numerous verbal tangents to the point Olson was clearly embarrassed. I respect Victoria as an artist, but on this night, she was simply not in condition to perform and should have cancelled. Thankfully, the final duo of that three-duo show -- Gillian Welch & David Rawlings -- saved the evening with a sweet set.

11/03 - Todd Rundgren @ Boulder Theater
- For a person in music that always struck me as an artist and producer whom is meticulous about arrangements, I'm sorry to say that Todd was woefully underrehearsed and painfully sloppy; hitting clams or forgotten lyrics in the majority of songs. The best song of the night was "Bang On The Drum" all day, which he played ukulele, simply because he didn't fuck it up. When he hit some nasty piano clams in the infamous "Hello It's Me", I had enough and left...and that was after debating to myself to leave for a half-hour and staying out of respect.

2/2000 - Weir & Wasserman @ Lupo's, Providence
- The problem was neither of the two nor Jeff Chimenti. The problem was a hired pro drummer, Dezdon Claiborne, who did not know any of the material, and butchered many a rhythm. So awful that he made Jay Lane look like Elvin Jones!

7/15/05 - Phil Lesh & Friends @ Denver Fillmore
- For reasons I've beaten to a dead horse, and that horse was named Ryan Adams.

8/30/08 - Ratdog @ Red Rocks
- Despite cameos by Warren, Derek and Susan; Weir looked like he wanted to go back to bed...and played like it! When none of the rockers rock, and Morning Dew becomes Morning Don't; you know this band did not have it that night.

Most people think Dean never missed a Greek run but in '83 he got his ass stuck on the East Coast after the Philly shows for some "personal business" and had to give up his Greek tickets that May.

All week in Berkeley I kept thinking "Shit, I can't believe Dean is missing this!". Every time I'd go into his favorite food co-op I kept expecting to see him, making time with the staff and filling his pack with dried fruit and what not. Not this time.

Anyway, before the last show some buddies and I are hanging in line waiting for the doors to open. It's a gorgeous day. Girls all in flowing skirts, some tasty hooch passing around. Then we see this incredible game of sack, these six Asian chicks totally killing it, the sack bouncing off every part of their beautiful bodies. I turn to my buddy and go "Fuck! Dean would be loving this shit!". Next thing I know, there's Dean in the circle, he pulls off a perfect ham splat, looks at me with that twinkle in his eye, smiles, and skips away.

I didn't see him again until Merriweather.

My hope is to photograph them but that may be a ways away.

Dear Danny:

Dave Hassinger is back from his New York trip and the tapes are being sent from New York. We plan to release the LP in February and must have all art work in her almost immediately. There is no time for delays or indecision as we must have the package on the market as quickly as possible.

The recording in New York turned out to be very difficult. Lack of preparation, direction and cooperation from the very beginning have made this album the most unreasonable project with which we have ever involved ourselves.

Your group has many problems, it would appear, and I would believe that Hassinger has no further interest or desire to work with them under conditions similar to this last fiasco. It's apparent that nobody in your organization has enough influence over Phil Lesh to evoke anything resembling normal behavior. You are now branded as an undesirable group in almost every recording studio in Los Angeles. I haven't got all the New York reports in as yet, but the guys ran through engineers like a steamroller.

It all adds up to a lack of professionalism. The Grateful Dead is not one of the top acts in the business as yet. With their attitudes and their inability to take care of business when it's time to do so would lead us to believe that they never will be truly important. No matter how talented your group is, they're going to have to put something of themselves into the business before they go anywhere.

Recording dates have been firmly fixed for January 3rd and two days thereafter. We expect that you will be on hand to complete this drawn out project and get the art work going. Your artistic control is subject to reasonable restrictions and I believe that the time and expense involved along with your own freedom has been more than reasonable. Now let's get the album out on the streets without anymore fun and games.

I skate through life happy go lucky and trust that everything will work out for the best. And pretty much it does.

We're prepared for a natural disaster. We'd be fine self contained at the house for 7 days. Plus we can harvest food out of the lagoon.

Worst case scenario here would be a bad earthquake and I don't see San Diego getting a real bad one. Worst case earthquake scenario here I could imagine wouldn't shut stuff down for more than 3 days.

I certainly did not want to imply that I was scared to post. Occasionally I read other topics for comic relief and enjoy most of the sarcasm and friendly bantor. When the conversation gets overly aggressive and strewn with useless, empty bravado I simply tuned out (as I should). Since I have very little time to participate on forums, I choose to only check in here. By time I get to the threads they generally have already been soiled by Duke's comments towards others and are spinning out of control. Thus, loss of interest on my part to participate. They do however get my irie up and I
felt compelled to comment on this thread. I prefer to hear someone say I have no backbone face to face : ) Sad life.....really. Laughable. For the record, I believe that you are just incredibly sarcastic and somewhat arrogant.
