Blackout Tuesday

Forums:

Your favorite record company probably hates racism

There's something happening here, what it is, is pretty damn clear.

#TheShowMustBePaused

We've been closed for over two months, but it's nice for the corporate suits to give themselves a day off to reflect.

Maybe they can come up with a plan for actually paying their artists instead of the file sharing services.

Don't believe the hype.

Meh

What exactly is this going to accomplish?

Some people will just never "get it"

In that case just  "Carry On"

Blackout Tuesday ia a symbolic show of solidarity amongst the like minded, to make a statement against systemic racism. A righteous ideological sentiment, but in practical terms it does not accomplish anything worthwhile, and seems rather superficial.

A.K.A. "virtue signalling".

No. "Virtue Signaling" is a bullshit phrase used in a derogatory manner by the socio-political right to belittle or discredit the socio-political left. It is used to further the already polarized divide.

I agree with that, Mr. Tofu Head.

Also, I see value in people pausing, supporting by collective (in)action, coming together to acknowledge anti-racism.

Funny, I only hear it used by my left-leaning progressive millennial acquaintances.   They, indeed, are using it as a putdown, but usually in a manner I equate with "grandstanding".

I agree with you about the spirit of the idea, Judit, but after years of watching some pretty crass behavior by record industry executives, I am dubious.

What exactly is this going to accomplish?

thoughts and prayers?

Regarding "Virtue Signaling", the phrase does describe Trump's upside down bible holding photo-op in front of a church. This shallow PR move, clearly to pander to his base was deemed important enough for Trump's reelection campaign to order police to violently disrupt a peaceful protest to clear the way for him. Church leaders weren't down with this.

Blackout Tuesday

I picked a bad day to quit blackout drinking.

There were some nice gestures yesterday.  The bandcamp.com website that nurtures independent artists has pledged to donate all the proceeds from purchases on their website on the annual Juneteenth to Black Lives Matter.

I'm looking at you Sony.
