Billy is playing downtown on the waterfront tonight, but unfortunately a brush with covid is keeping us home. He played last night too. (Anyone got a stream?)
Billy Strings // Thunder (Robert Hunter cover) / Live at Pier 6 / 7.2.22
This was the vibe yesterday right when we were supposed to walk on stage I’m soo amazed at the resilience of y’all who found shelter, ran back to your cars, or waited under the tent and cheered after every giant round of thunder. You all kept the party going, never giving up on having a great night and insisting that it still happen.. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for that energy. The clouds cleared and we celebrated together. It was pure bliss.. Today we have beautiful weather and it’s the last gig of this leg… let’s fucking rage. (Photo cred: Troy Purinton)
I was at the Billy Strings shows in Baltimore the last two nights and they were incredible. I haven't heard a crowd response like that since a blazing China Cat > Rider first set closer over 40 years ago. This kid has gotten more popular than anything I've ever seen in bluegrass. It really seems to be from the heart, from the roots of the music, and from once in a generation talent.
Billy and his team keep describing Thunder as a Robert Hunter cover, but his version is very different than Billy K's BK3 version from 2008-2009. Here's a quote from Billy (Strings) that seems to confirm he (re)wrote the music.
"I was blown out of the atmosphere when Billy Kreutzmann said he wanted me to take a crack at writing the music to these lyrics by the late great Robert Hunter. I cried like a baby for like an hour after I hung up the phone. I can’t recall a time being so overcome with joyful emotion. This happened on a day when I was really doubting myself as well. Thank you Billy K for trusting me with this.. it is seriously such an honor. Hope we play it again at Red Rocks next month!!" https://liveforlivemusic.com/news/billy-strings-robert-hunter-thunder-lo...
Not sure I'd call it a cover because Billy wrote the music for Thunder. More like a posthumus collaboration? He does cover a lot of Hunter/Garcia tunes but Thunder is legitimately a Hunter/Apostol composition.

I love Tyler. Great music and lyrics. Discovered him maybe 5 years ago but he comes off as really timid on stage especially since his recent success.
Billy is definitely not shy and going with the flow of his success and having a blast,

I love the little pull-off
I love the little pull-off/descending arpeggio thing in Thunder. Spent an hour+ one night seeing how many other tunes I could work it into.
I recall Sugaree being a real solid fit.
