Hurricane Lane is bearing down on the Hawaiian Islands as a Category 4 or 5 storm, expected to make landfall today. Wishing all the Islanders safety and shelter from the storm, especially Chuck & Gloria, who were our gracious hosts for the final of the DNB shows on the Big Island a couple of years ago, and to St. Mark's in-laws, who I believe still live there.
The surf must be huge!

It is not actually expected
It is not actually expected to make landfall. It is possible that it will turn that way, and if so it would hit Big Island today, but most of the models show it passing by without hitting land. However, the islands are within the rain bands and are going to get hit with a ton of rain and big surf as the storm slows down. I think the huge rain amounts are going to be the primary concern unless it does make the curl up toward Big Island.

Lots of rain for sure. Hilo
Lots of rain for sure. Hilo has received 13 inches since just yesterday. Big storm surge too.
Hurricane Lane meets Kilauea. At least it will blow away all that smoke and volcanic gasses.

Last time I was on the BI in August we got 'brushed' by a tropical storm... it didn't cause any real damage, but it did fuck with our fun (so I probably won't ever go back during 'hurricane' season).
Did you guys already go, Alias?

Chickentown has a spread out there too. Hope everything's alright, man.
One of my old friends from Virginia ended up on the North Shore of Maui after she deprogrammed from The Spinners. I'll guess this storm will wreak havoc with the Outdoor harvest. Hoping to get to Maui this Winter.

Nope, about 10 days out googs. We should be OK but it might fuck with our snorkeling and our road travel if they get serious slides.

cool, hopefully the sea has settled down by then. I haven't been keeping up on the eruption lately... are they allowing people to do any viewing? If so, that would be at the top of my list.

No viewing, although I think at this point there isn't anything much to view except the aftermath. The flow has pretty much stopped. Crazy crazy shit.

My kid lives up in
My kid lives up in Laupahoehoe and has had 25 inches of rain in 24 hours. Driveway is washed out, rock slides closed part of the main road, house is leaking but intact.

Damn. Even for an area like that up on the windward side where they get 100+ inches a year, that's still a lot of water.
Current forecast shows it turning west before it can make landfall on Oahu. Think this will be more of a rain and storm surge event.
