Or Wana Crypto & some other names.
It's a ransomware that locks up your files until you send the naughty people BitCoins. Uses a gov't backdoor into WinDoze which some hackers recently auctioned off.
Don't open peculiar email attachments and lock down your 'Port 445'.

Yep, the microsuck patch came out in March so it's basically infecting machines that have not been kept up to date. That's millions of computers.

Wasn't this attack focused on
Wasn't this attack focused on overseas hospitals?
Is some random citizen going to kick down $300 in Bitcoin (how?) so they can get their porn-stash unlocked? Probably not. But yeah, update your windows, people.

Some UK hospitals were badly
Some UK hospitals were badly affected, but Wales & Scotland were OK as they had updated their OS.
Then there were some telephone companies and other places which were affected.
Still ongoing.

Still ongoing.
We have not even seen the tip of the iceberg with this style of attack yet. Besides computers that have not updated their Windows OS installation with the patch that was released, all installations of Win XP do not have a patch. Installations of Win 7 only have a patch if your computer was part of a corporate plan and the business paid for extended support.
Before the other OS armies start talking about WinDoze and such, there are also tools that were hacked for all flavors of Apple OSs, most common distros of Linux and Unix as well as an number of proprietary OSs used mostly in things like routers and switches.
Do not run old OSs because you are going to get bit going forward unless that computer isn't connected to the internet or any other computer.
Names of the ransomware really don't matter since the files are encrypted and more or less inviable to most anti-virus software.

If you use that computer and don't have backups to your critical files (tax returns, business projects, etc) and they are locked down, the answer is often yes.

The other one is called "Jaff
The other one is called "Jaff" and they want about 3,000 dollars in BitCoin.
So "Wanna Cry" is sort of a bargain.
Anyway my super-cheap WinDoze machine has not much of any value, although I should back up some favorite Dog photos...

In a previously unheard of
In a previously unheard of fashion, Microsoft has released a patch for older OSs that no longer have official support and updates. This is very good news for those who a still running Win 8 and older OSs. You can get the patch to plug the vulnerability here.
