"...WASHINGTON (ABC7) — Retailers pulled at least 31 varieties of dog food off the shelves nationwide after a months-long investigation found the euthanasia drug, pentobarbital.
After releasing the results of lab tests that identified the drug, the FDA launched an investigation. And now, just days later, Smucker’s, the owner of almost all the brands in question, announcing a voluntary withdrawal. It includes products in the Gravy Train, Kibbles ‘N Bits, Skippy and Ol’ Roy lines of canned food.
Retailers, including the nation's largest, Walmart, removed it from all 4,700 stores..."
Some popular brands there, although I avoid anything with 'meat by-products' or such. The MBP could be road kill, slaughterhouse waste, euthanized pets / horses / livestock...
All the brands pulled are made by Smucker's.

If you've got any cans from those brands, bring them back to the store.
You'd think the processing at the rendering plant would convert the barbituates to some harmless stuff, but that's not the case.

I don't think there's any carcass in the Smucker's jam. I like the fancy ones from overseas (Cool Jars).
Anyway, growing up we always had dogs, and it was Alpo kibble w/ cans of Alpo or "Cadillac" mixed in. In retrospect, it was crap food, full of MBP, but there weren't as many choices as today. The dogs did OK and lived long healthy lives. (We also had no idea that dogs were adversely affected by Garlic & Omions, and they always ate leftovers with those... not big handfuls of raw Alliums, but certainly some leftover tomato sauce or vegetable soup.)
We just didn't know; our vet never warned us about Omions (or Grapes, Raisins, Chocolate) and there was no interwebs in the 70's.
Now you can look at a site like this one and they explain what every ingredient is in high-quality dog food, and why crummy ones are crummy.

When I got mine, he was almost a year old and had been fed Grain-Free kibble, mainly Blue Wilderness Salmon formula. I didn't like the "Canola" oil as a major fat source, otherwise it seems to be OK. Now he's got Nulo and Solid Gold for kibble + various grain-free wet food mixed in. I feed raw Lamb or Beef ribs a few times a week, the occasional Turkey drumstick (raw) and sometimes ground turkey, lightly cooked.

Natural Balance is the parent
natural balance is owned by smuckers, who bought them and the brands listed in the recall in 2015, they are no longer the parent company and dont have anything at all to do with this lawsuit. smuckers is the parent company.
