The best laugh Phil ever gave me

Forums:

Today in my random music feed (I have a flash drive full of music plugged into my car) - the Bertha from Glens Falls PLF from 10/20/07, came up - from the show where the mayor gave Phil the key to the city. Twas a real hoot all around that show in so many ways. The time machine of them playing in a small upstate NY skating rink was most excellent. It was absolutely one of the top 5 LF shows I was ever at.

Anyway - Trey was in the Friends that night and it was special for him to be able to play this gig  because his parole officer (or whoever with the court) let him play this show because he was within a certain mile radius of  White Hall, NY where he had been arrested the year before driving back to Vermont.

They closed the first set with Bertha that night and despite of there being others singers in the band that night (like JGe), I'm positive Phil made sure Trey sang the lead on Bertha - just so he could watch the reaction of the crowd when Trey had to sing the lines "Test me, test me, why don't you arrest me, throw me in the jailhouse..." a mere 23 miles from the seen of the crime. I don't think I have ever laughed as hard at a PLF show as I did then. Good times. Thank you, Phil.

thank you, phil.

Trey broke out that goofy grin of his while singing that line. I think it gave him a good laugh as well.

i can email the SBD of this show to anybody that would like it.

HMU Pyramid, you have my addy?

^yessir.

mp3 unfortunately, but the sbd nonetheless.

The crowd went berserk when Trey got to that line

Hell of a show and a real great tour

id pay to see this band play, today, given the current environment of the dead scene-blows it all away. not even close.

Cool man I can throw it on the iPod for my bus rides sounds great

It's a GREAT show - a fav for me. I believe Larry Campbell played on that one, making it even better.

Alabama Getway, Deal, Bertha, FOTD, lots of law or jail references in that first set. l remember Zoners noticing that right away. Laughing about Phil humorously busting Trey's balls. But a great show.

Box Of Rain

Link, Bookmarked, thanks Sam.

I remember Phil was hiding behind a speaker before the donor rap and they put the spot light on him and he made this strange kind of candid like pose of his profile. That was pretty fuckin funny.

Damn, that setlist is serious

Sounds great, thanks Pyramid

Yes please, Pyramid!

Thanks bunches:)

Fun Fun OLD SCHOOL Fun !!!!

Haven't listened to this one in a while, was in heavy rotation at one time. Thanks for the flashback.

i think i got my ticket from peglet for this show.

zoners helping zoners. big fun. lots of L in glenn's falls that night, the entire town was spinning post show!

tracy, emotw.

Peglet is one of the goodest eggs out there. Love that woman.

Pyramid, can I grab a copy of that sbd?  Don’t believe I have your email addy.

[email protected]

hoover, emotw.

A lot of jail related tunes that show...I remember reading Phil’s first act as Honorary  Mayor was to pardon Trey...killer Phil show...

real recognizes real. that is a raging show. thanks for the reminder.

My recollection of that show is of reading the comments about it on the zone in the days after. There were a bunch of "Wow, I've never liked Trey but THAT was really good!" posts, and it seemed that everyone who went thought it was a barn-burner.

Except Northernlites. If I remember correctly he fully bagged on Trey & the show.

I miss lites.

As for the best laugh Phil ever gave me, it was the "HEY PHIL, WHAT'S HAPPENING?!!?" moment at the Greek on 9/12/81, when the band was ready to do a 2nd encore but Phil was nowhere to be found. When Weir said, "On a count of three everybody say hey Phil, what's happening" the crowd roared it as one. It was so loud & clear people must have heard it on Market Street across the bay, and the sound of it in the venue blew my mind.

It may have been Bob who set it up but it was Phil's doing,

^^^^ I'll 2nd that, and add 9/26/81 Buffalo War Memorial, second row center, wore a tie dye with his own smiling face on it....

Just down the road from Glens Falls, at Saratoga in '85, when Phil and Bob were

harshing on a dude hanging off the balcony.

"There's 50,000 people waiting for you to get back in your seat man. You got any friends up there?"

Then of course came the "my dog has no nose" joke.

Funny scene, strong show.

I gotta say it was when he and Jill flipped off the reaper.

>>harshing on a dude hanging off the balcony [Saratoga '85]

I happened to know that guy from Montreal. Not the brightest bulb. All he ever said about it was: "It wasn't just me up there..." I think they were up in the rafters at SPAC.

So I guess he did have some 'friends' with him.

(((((That Show))))))

I dig the dirty blues jam in Pride Of Cucamunga

Is there any doubt that this was Treys best show with Phil?

^^99 comeback shows @ warfield were top trey n phil too id say.

^Oh yeah, with Kimock right? Def some cool stuff. Good band.

Orleans 2006 action with Modeski was worthy, but I don't go for ranking art.

I never ever missed a show at Glens Falls CC, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982 & 2007. That was a fun show. Yeah, I'd definitely like to hear a recording of it too. And what an adventure that night was also. As I got into Glen's Falls, parking on the street, my car died. I looked under the hood, saw the tension pulley had froze and shredded the serpentine belt. I called a tow truck, had the Saab towed over to a local dealer, took a cab to Albany Airport and rented a Hertz. I made it back to Glen's Falls in time for the beginning of the second song. Great show! When I got home, my wife looked at the new Impala and asked, where's the Saab. Quite the adventure, and very fortunate that it all worked out. I never did run into Robin or Bill at the Civic Center.

^^^^^^ a bunch of my friends were on that balcony at Saratoga in 85...i was up there pre show, and as it got packed , i went back to our "site" on the hill w 20 or so others. So, id guess there were about 10 ppl i know who were up there. it was a free for all, as anybody who was there knows...ppll were sneaking into show from every direction (including tons of ppl from some "river" or body of water, hill, and fenced area behind stage. It was very easy to get up to balcony before the show, and at differant times throughout first set, ppl "rushed" the three (2?)paved walkways to the balcony entrance..so, anyway, all the people on the balcony agreed it was more than one that was leaning over..it was just way too overcrowded , i blv the kid mentioned above (from canada, in Mosthighs post) and a few others were booted off balcony...or at least security got their shit together and tightened it down...at that point, everybody on field knew it was too crowded up there, as ppl were also basically hanging and waving backside (toward us on the hill) as well...

looking back its a miracle nobody was seriously hurt...

never miss a saratoga show!

**to this day, im still surprised when i go back and listen, lookup, or just think about those shows...83,84,85, all one nighters at Saratoga...but, as those that were there know....they seemed to last for days!! as a matter of fact, alot of those shows blur together as one long saratoga event..lol.... musta been the drive, or......;)

Along with this show and 99' warfield, I'm gonna say That 06' blizzard show with trey in NYC was one of his best performances with Phil as well

the viola>cumby triple stacked sandwich made me and probably everyone there lose their minds.

good phil.

^and i agree, E. the blizzard show was spectacular.

05 book signing. phil signs my book and we pose for the picture. there is an official phtog guy, well he blows it and phil graciously poses for 2 more chances, pulls me in close and says "come here cutie". or something to that effect. wish i had the pic. dude behind me took one, we traded, and its all blurry trippy but lost long ago...

usually during the donor rap, and phil always sounding like some strange swamp monster speaking into a microphone. shit cracks me up every time.

Vegoose latenight  with Trey, Molo, Medeski, is fantastic. Dark, gritty, mind fuck. Love it.

What a great memory! One of my favorite shows ever heartheartheart First night of the tour for me (maybe it was even the actual first show of the tour?) I wasn't planning on going the following night; it was 2007 so I still had a full set of spontaneity-squashing normal human responsibilities (FT job, 6-year-old & two teenagers at home, etc. etc.). But Glens Falls was so much fun that I "had to" juggle my plans around (& drive approximately a zillion extra miles) so I could make it to Syracuse.

That was before I became a member of the PZ so I didn't know any of you guys yet. Turns out, there were a lot of zoners at that show.

Phil was the headliner for the Mansfield ‘06 show when they were swapping with G.R.A.B each night.  After the Box encore, Phil said “thank you all, god bless, goodnight and don’t forget the GRAB band coming on right now.... What am I saying?! This is it!"
