Best 25 dollars I've spent in a long time: Fantastic Cat

Forums:

I want to give a heads up to all of you here that Fantastic Cat is the real deal and you would be foolish if you didn't catch a show when they come around your way. I've known and worked with the four members, Don DiLego, Anthony D'Amato, Brian Dunne and Mike Montali for a number of years in past projects and solo work. A little over a year ago on a lark they decided to get together in the studio and see what come out. What came out is Fantastic Cat. I saw the first few show last year and was impressed on how they meshed so well and after last night at Danny Clinch's Transparent Gallery in Asbury Park I was expecting a good to very good show. I severely underestimated the show. They were, like their group name, fantastic. Each member plays guitar or bass or drums or mandolin or... whatever the song needs. They switch instruments almost every song. Their stage banter is hilarious. Their vocal harmony is flawless. Their instrumental prowess is solid. A big plus in my book is that they really don't take themselves too seriously. A point made well with their slogan: Folk music for pussies.

Last weekend they made their network television debut on CBS Morning and there is a buzz happening for more of the same. Below are a few links

CBS Morning

Not a lot of dates right now but it looks like they will be opening up for Mother Hips in Dec and there probably be other west coast date around then.

Enjoy.

Thanks for the head's up, Tony. Sounds like something I'll look out for and take a chance on if they're out here in Motown (SLC).

Thanks Anthony....

Listened to a few tunes, and they brought my wife from the kitchen : "What is this?" and she hung around for the next 2 tunes.

Good stuff

Full album up on da yootoobses.  Poke around.

Best $25 I ever spent, this hooker on Cherry St back in the day, I think her name was Crystal.

Cherry St. was where the hookers were at in my town too, Canton Ohio

Agree. If you are going to lift something from another song, might as well lift it from something really good. :-)

Just to be clear, even if you like the songs and video linked above, seeing them live is where it is at. The blew away everyone in the house the other night. It is one of those bands that completely gels on stage.

I like what I hear.  Thanks for the tip!

Yeah, I agree ... although still holding out hope of the stars aligning that does not include "derivations".

Likewise, to be able to see several shows in a row without hearing the same set.  Not sure if this is the case with FC?

As with any new band on the road promoting their debut album, most set lists will feature a core of songs from the album. There really isn't anyway around that. With that being said, the fact that each of the members have many solo/band projects behind them that contribute to their repertoire as well as a deep well of covers that come with many years performing, set lists won't be nearly as static as many bands in the same part of their journey. I don't see many going ot FC tour yet, so I don't think that is a real issue.
