Barlow Frenzy @ Fillmore 4-8 Webcast

I have Fillmore tickets - but there is zero leakage - very slim info on just exactly what will go down.

The only info I have is Shapiro paid for renting the Fillmore and for the presence of a brass band.

I’m going to both events

anyone ' watching ' ? / WAITING?

Yes, it seems like a heartfelt, solemn and dignified slide show, but I have to wonder if there's some kind of delay because they're run through the photos a few times already...plus I don't hear any kind of audio, crowd noise, anything...

On deck

Waiting......

Thanks for the good morning dew this morning djyes

Darn, wish I could hear what's going on. If it's going on.

Doors opened at 5:20, according to chat.  They aren't close to starting, sez an innie.

so it looks like you guys don't have sound either.

Thanks Hooper. It was fun!

Here we are!

The brass band was good (aside from that "make some noise" nonsense). I liked their groove when they were playing horns and not singing or talking. After that, a white woman recited some boring verbose new age prayer, sang excerpts from a haftorah and burned some kind of sage-like witches brew. Bet there was long lines at the bars and bathrooms during that.

I really enjoyed mountains girl's thoughts, wonderful story!

Must be quite the Memorial Barlow Frenzy there in person.

Wonder if they had Live Music at the Golden Gate Park event ?

Have a Blast,  BayAreans.

Ed Snowden giving tribute, wow, didn't see that coming!

I heard a tape years ago...yes, a book on tape, Masters of Deception, first hackers @ AT&T, where I learned about Electronic Frontier Foundation that Barlow began.  Guess I shouldn't be surprised, but I sure didn't expect that either.

We are extremely fortunate to see/hear this. I love it.  Alden Bevington, JPB's squire, is a great person to follow Snowden. MG's story was indeed a good one.

I'm very moved and happy to hear people who think.

"stop following me"  (LOL, luv it luv it luv it!)

Love Forgives Everything video

A powerful evening on many levels. I'm glad I made the effort to get there.

We come, we go.

On it goes.

I dug what I saw, The Soul Rebels, Jerry Harrison, but sorry I missed the balance. Is it up on Youtube yet?

moonalice on FB has vid

This is very cool, thanks for sharing the details.  Hopefully videos will be shared.

Cool Thanks

Hope it stays up

Ill watch it later while I paint

There were some fun jams, some expected self-indulgent presentations and some trainwrecks too.

But in the end - the love for and spirit of Barlow was richly celebrated!

I had fun but there were not very many stellar, cutting edge, holy shit musical moments due to the clusterpluck aspect of things with often, 5 guitarists on stage.   Kimock could barely be heard...

Lucas Nelson took on most of the Weir/Barlow vocals - while standing next to Weir - which seemed odd and Weir while appearing generally happy, didn't look all that hale and hardy (IMHO).

Sean Lennon was impressive with some really fine lead breaks and some great fingerpicking too.

Jerry Harrison was underwhelming but interesting.

Wally, Alex, Robyn and whomever the other bassist was were all solid.

The Barlow sisters were sweet, beautiful and earnest.  And they actually could sing.

I loved the dude who was trying to avoid the spotlight - and claimed to be Barlow's "Squire."
Especially when he suggested that A) like his idol, he was striving (as a goal) to ad lib in public while on LSD and that B) even nearing his own demise, Barlow continued to consume copious amounts of the same.....

The Brass Band that opened was fantastic not just for being the tightest thing on stage, but for entertaining the crowd on Geary Blvd as IDs were checked at Will Call...   The gigantic trombone player was especially awesome!

The Steve Goodman Moment w Kimock, and several other episodes of this event, IMHO were self indulgent in that they were perhaps 5 to 10 minutes too long.... but what can ya do?

The flown in  - vid moment of Ramblin' Jack reciting a beautiful and funny elegy was fantastic and moving.

The flown in - vid moment of Edward Snowden was hampered by out of sync audio and buffering - but the ultimate point about Barlow being the "Ultimate American," was worth the long wait for the wind up.

Weir has just lost one of his oldest and closest friends, and his wordsmith.  I'm sure it's hard on him.  Same as when he lost Garcia.  There's less and less of his childhood friends still around.  Matt Kelly's known him since they grew up in Atherton.  It's always tough losing your friends.

Like Jerry's public memorial, it seems a little ragged, but fitting that there was a communal celebration of the life of JPB.

Agreed Dave....

As well - I am sure Weir was affected by the recent loss of Churucki....

It was obvious to me that there was something wrong with Bob's voice, which was the only real musical disappointment for me. I wasn't expecting much musically, as these type of deals are always sloppy, but I thought most of the music was solid and the final few were really good and would have been excellent if Weir could have sung them instead of Fake Willie (who did fine, but as always when someone else is singing Weir songs it reminds me how good Weir has always been).

It looked to me that Bob was OK overall and enjoying himself but maybe had Laryngitis or something like that, as he squeaked some background vocals on the songs he would normally sing lead and just barely got though lead vocals on Cassidy. He's been in great voice lately, but when you're 70 years old shit's gonna' happen sometimes.

It was still fun & powerful to see that old dog up on the Fillmore stage. At one point while Bob was on stage and I was hanging in the back corner of the room I glanced behind me and saw a very old photo of the Grateful Dead/Warlocks on the wall...

Warlocks_0.jpg

As I thought about how that young boy was playing music in the Fillmore Auditorium 50+ years ago, the sense of time hit me as I looked back & forth from the photo of the boy to the old man on stage,  the same person still playing music in that same room. I'm a sucker for that type of thing, especially at that type of event.

Even without Bob singing I did like the final group, and it was fun to be in that room without it being packed as it usually is. It was odd to see such an eclectic group of people up there together, with John Lennon's son, Paul Simon's son & Willie Nelson's son next to old-timers like Kimock, Harrison and of course Bob, but that was just one reflection of the deep and varied connection to so many different people that Barlow had.

(BTW, what's the deal with Sean Lennon's accent? Didn't he grow up in New York City? His, odd, slightly English accent; "Barlow knew me mum before me dad did" sounded  a bit strange to me.)

A really long event like that with so much eulogizing and rambling speeches would have gotten real dull real fast for me for just about anyone else, but Barlow was just so damn interesting and dynamic a person all the stories were fascinating, as was the video of him working his ranch. The guy was a full-time rancher for 17 years, and still had time to connect to so many people and lead such a full life.

And what a life that guy had, what a character he was, and I thought all the speakers, including the always fun to hear Carolyn Adams, brought Barlow's broad brilliance to light.

He deserved a sendoff like that, and I was happy to be there.

I haven't seen Jerry Harrison in 35 years.  He looks like the child of Robert Plant and Tim Carbone.

Thanks for your powerful posts Treblemaker and Heathentom.  RIP JPB

I had to wipe a bit of a tear after reading that.  Beautiful sentiment.  You are a refined heathen.

Didn't realize Bobby is "expecting"!

Yeah, Paunchy Bobby is a new one.  He was always the fitness freak of the group.   Must be slowing down.

Such great shared love for Barlow. (And Charucki)

Ro, thanks for the photos and more. I wasn't able to get the feed last night, hope to find it again. The night at the Fillmore was so special, I've heard that about last night, too.

>>Yeah, Paunchy Bobby is a new one.  He was always the fitness freak of the group.   Must be slowing down.

push-up regiment perhaps?

nice snaps, Ro.  thanks for sharing.

The final set of music from Sweetwater sounded better than the finale from The Fillmore the previous night.  Weir had more of his familiar Ratdog band mates and less clusterfuck on stage. I was able to hear more from Kimock!

I sure like Lucas Nelson. His guitar playing has soared in the past few years since he and his band started playing with Neil Young. I like his voice and stage presence. He brings vibrant, exciting, bad ass rock-n-roll energy, with a down to earth reverence for roots, like the fabulous Ronnie Van Zant. Yea, he reminded me of Ronnie a little bit these past 2 nights. That never happens. Nobody ever reminds me of Ronnie Van Zant, definitely not his brothers. The Nelson kid is good!

Barlow's daughter shared a parting quote from her father that I think is very profound and inspiring. She said he told her "Be radically yourself all the time. That's freedom"! Words to live by. I love it!
