Bands or Artists You Gave Up On

Forums:

That EC thread got me to thinkin,, what artists have you once loved, but now just plain given up on ?  I'm loyal to the grave. If I loved you in my youth, I pretty much still love you. I may not always be excited about all their output (Aoxamoxoa which is probably the worst sounding album ever recorded, Some Girls, etc) but I'll go see you till I'm no longer breathing.

Except for Jethro Tull. After John Even left the band it changed the live sound so much for the worse, I had to bail out. They were sooooo good in the 70's, kicked balls.

What you got ?

Dave Mason after Alone Together, Allman Bros. after Brothers and Sisters

The Starshit ,Winwood between Traffic groups

Dead , Dylan, Leonard Cohen I'm there until the end

I was actually thinking of a similar sort of thread as a result of EC.   I also really don't ever "give up" on an artist; however, I will naturally pull back for reasons related to music, and also draw boundaries as a result of learning about their political views.  On this latter count, I won't go to see any of the following (who I may have otherwise):

Eric Clapton

"Cat Stevens"

Van Morrison

Mike Love

There's also likely a long list of musicians I wouldn't have seen anyway, but definitely won't because of their political views.  This list would include:

Ted Nugent

Kid Rock

Toby Keith

While we're at it, even though they're not musicians (as far as I know):

Jon Voight

Ricky Schroder

Were you a Ricky Schroder fan before he broke bad?

Nice list 19.5 I agree. But fuuuuuck Scott Baio too!

I've had to walk away from the GD scene a couple three times, but, like Michael Corleone in Godfather III, I always get pulled back in.

Yonder after they kicked Jeff out

RRE since Andy passed. Realized he was 90% of why I was interested

pretty much anything with weir

This version of Skynyrd.

Oh yeah, This version of Marshall Tucker Band.

I'm with ya on RRE. I knew the moment Andy died that they were toast. He WAS RRE

Nah ... never got into Silver Spoons, but I actually thought he did a good job as "Agent Doyle" in 24:

For that matter, Jon Voight did an excellent job on 24 too ... although his character (deranged Jonas Hodges) was probably not much of a leap for him.

Dylan. He's an album guy for me now. Won't go to a show to listen to him mumble through. Just got word he's coming to SLC June 30th.

I stopped seeing Dylan in 2003 but decided to check out one last time in 2019, was amazed at how incredible he was

I've had to walk away from the GD scene a couple three times>>>

Same w/JGB.  Saw him early/late separate admissions in late '82.  Both one set shows opened w/How Sweet It Is & also played Run For The Roses 2X.  Catch you later.

Tried again acoustic w/Kahn in late '84, same venue.  One two set show, his voice was horrendous, everyone I talked to that was there was scared for him, just breathing was a struggle. Glad as heck I came back in '89.

"John Voight bit me"

He was fantastic in Ray Donovan.

Any band that lies about their final tour and comes back.

Any band with one original player like the drummer or bass player.

Any band that charges exorbitant prices for a ticket. Lot's of them out there.

...............

Phish. They were a great bar band. Then they stopped playing in bars.

I saw DSO every time I had a chance from 1999 until JK left to join Furthur.  I will still see them if the are at a festival, but otherwise won't make much of an effort to see them these days.

you mean like John McLaughlin calling it quits after that 2017 Mahavishnu tour (highlight of the year for me)

The Wailers band, unfortunately.

Have seen and always enjoyed hearing their music live for more than 10yrs.  Have seen and continued to support them even as original members naturally dwindle.  Last time saw Familyman about 9 yrs ago he played 1st set only.  Local upcomming show announced and appears the current band member closest to originals is Familyman's son playing drums...  @$45+fees????

Guess im now a venue alleyway Rastaman.

Susan  Dey (Laurie Partridge) from The Partridge Family when I realized she was older than me and would never date a sixth grader.

The_Partridge_Family_Susan_Dey_1970.jpg

Jimi Hendrix, gave up on him the day he died

All of the nostalgia acts (Phil, Bob, Stones, Pearl Jam, countless others)

McCartney, The Stones, The Who, John Fogerty, Justin Hayward (Moody Blues), Rod Stewart

all definitely on the vocal downside now, should have just packed it in pre-covid

I gave this some thought and the only artist/group that I've fully given up on is Yes once Jon Anderson didn't return to the fold. Then when Chris Squire died, there wasn't a chance of reversal.

Kiss, after I turned 11.

gave up on Pablo Picasso

Just cant afford his work, like way outta my range

Steven Stills

Bob Dylan

Crash Test Dummies

Lyle Lovett

Kris Kristofferson

Chris Robinson

I tried Phish once.   But I guess I prefer to be a vegetarian.

The Doors, after I turned 17.

Cabinet, cheeky

had promise and lost their way, a hipster band at its best now.

I've never seen it, but can see from a character write-up how he'd be a good fit.

This kind of raises an interesting question:  why should I be copacetic with Jon Voight playing roles that closely mirror the negative qualities that might actually be present within his real life persona?   What if Ryan Adams (I'm officially adding him to my list) were to sing a song about abusing women;  should I suddenly give him a "pass"?

Bad Brains HR is a shell of what he once was

Bad Brains HR is a shell of what he once was

Indeed he is not the HR of early Bad Brains days but one has to cut him a little slack. Very few people of his age who have been diagnosed with SUNCT syndrome and schizophrenia are functioning at all much less still performing in any capacity. I'm actually going to see him next month doing a solo and BB reggae set in Asbury Park that is being promoted by a friend's son.

Phil is not nostalgia for me. Anytime I am in a venue and hear him plug in... That's fucking Phil Lesh - the depths of the Grateful Dead - the sound I have been searching for and found for over 45 years now.

My complaint is not so much with the artists and musicians, rather the whole current models of corporate entertainment and the outrageous prices, manipulation of customers, and being bossed and herded around like one of a multitude of sheep. Oh, and then drunks talking through the show. That's not really a lot of fun. I certainly don't want to pay for abuse.

The Clash after they kicked Mick Jones out of the band.

Michael Jackson after Thriller.

The Pogues without Shane MacGowan.

Boston after Don't Look Back.

The Guess Who after Randy Bachman split.

Pink Floyd without Roger Waters.

Paul Weller after he broke up The Jam.

Van Halen without David Lee Roth or Michael Anthony.

R.E.M. after they left I.R.S. for Warner Brothers.

Sting after he went solo.

> Bad Brains HR is a shell of what he once was

Caught HR's reggae set in Austin last night. As noted, he is not wht he was in the Bad Brains days. From a dubwise perspective, however, the show was not at all disappointing. Think Lee Perry in his later years and you get the gist.

As far as acts I've given up on, Richard Thompson solo acoustic comes to mind. While I'll see him play electric with a band any old time, those solo gigs started to achieve a sameness after a while that I just couldn't justify shelling out for. That said, his banter is always (almost) worth the price of admission.

the doors

I guess it's Phish. Loved them for about 5 years in the 90s (90-95) and then I went to a show and was so bored that I never went back.

I haven't seen RRE since Andy passed.  But they are still killin' it.  I'm on every show as soon as posts.

I wrote Barenaked Ladies off for dead when Stephen Page left.  How do you replace a singer like that?

With killer four-part harmonies, apparently.  Page's pen is missed as well, but Ed is still writing sharp, tight songs.

The Who still get one listen per tune annually (My Wife, Boris The Spider and Eminence Front get a pass; but anything else gets nixed quick).

I'll listen to a Doors jam if I don't have to wade through too much Morrison to get to it.smiley

David Bromberg Band has left me a bit flat the last few times.  I opted for a stream of a show I could have attended and was glad I didn't make the trip.

Richard Thompson seemed more prone to senior moments the last few times I saw him but is still an absolute GUITAR GOD.

>>>> wrote Barenaked Ladies off for dead when Stephen Page left.

BNL still put on a great show.   That's one band I was never into until I saw them live.  My son liked them so I took him up to see them in Vancouver BC with no expectations and was very surprised and impressed.

Not so much artists as specific songs. BTO's TCOB ranks at the top. Anything from Reo honeywagon or Journey can be used as a torture tactic.

The Republican Party after Lincoln - although temporarily  back on board in 1901 with Teddy R.

The Peoples Temple once they left Indiana

Hale Bopp Comet once it got crowded

Carlos Castaneda after the 2nd book - although that scene flamed out spectacularly
