The band Lucero?

Forums:

A friend has just opened a new club in the area and is setting me up to see a band called Lucero tonight.

I've been to the venue once, when it opened with Robert Glasper last week, and it's a sweet little room that's close to me (a half-hour easy drive, which for me is as close as it gets for good venues) so I have been looking for reasons to go back, and my friend offered so I'm going.

I've never heard of Lucero so I checked out a few videos, and while they seem OK they're not a band I would have bought a fairly pricey ticket for.

Anyone have any opinions on this group? Will I enjoy these guys?

Lucero is solid and put on a good show. Enjoy.

Hard rocking hard working/touring bar band. Lower expectations, have a few beers and throw a few fist pumps in the air and a good time is possible.

My friend went to the show and really liked the band. I could have joined her, but I've been working too many late nights (for me) and crashed at 7 pm. The venue was offering up a bunch of free tix for the show. Word is still trickling out about the new venue

My older brother is a big fan of both Lucero and Michigan Rattlers. He tried to get me to go, but I chose Ambrose Akinmusire at SFJazz.

I got to see the Michigan Rattlers last week - good stuff. Would be great if they add another guitarist

The trio with Bill Frisell? How was that?

I saw his show there on Friday. He had a different group, a quartet along with a full chamber orchestra, playing some longer piece he'd written. I really like Akinmusire but that show didn't really work for me. It was long, slow and a bit rambling, and I didn't feel like his jazz quartet gelled with all the strings & horns. He's playing at the Guild with his quartet next month and I plan on going to that.

As for Lucero, they didn't really work for me either. There was nothing wrong with it, it was just too singer/song soft Americana for me. Their songs were solid but I kept waiting for them to take one to a different dynamic level or just rock a little harder, but there was no real soloing, and what there was just piddled along and fell right back into the song.

They're good but not really my type of thing. I see them as an opening act for a band like The Mavericks or Wilco, not really a headliner to me, although they definitely have some serious fans.

They can't all be winners, but the price was right and I still had a nice time.

The new trio and Owl Song material was really sublime. I was personally blown away by Herlin Riley on percussion, he was the perfect choice. Hopefully they record this material.
