Autzen 6/17/1994

Forums:

Noting 26th anniversary of a fun day in the rain in Eugene. Good second set of rain songs.  Ran back to the room after the show to watch Knicks/Rockets only to find OJ on every channel.  Ended a great day with Merle & Rainforest Band at the Hilton.  Good times.

I should've gone to Oregon

Think that was the night they had "Twister"  at Erb Memorial Union Ballroom.
(A strange play w/ Kesey & Pranksters loosely based upon Wizard of Oz).

EMU is on U. of Oregon campus.

That was a fun run of shows and my first time in Oregon. The late afternoon Scarlet>Fire on Sunday was long and dandy under very blue skies and whispy clouds.

That was a fun run of shows.  Autzen was the way all shows should have been handled.   Let the freeks camp in the parking lot instead of shoving them out into the streets of some strange town with their heads loaded.

A splendid time was had by all.

West Coast GD shows (Bill Graham Presents rings strong) seemed to be better managed overall, seemingly  thoughtfully considering 'everything'

Drove up with friends in a double-decker school bus I'd later find myself living in...'65 split window VW as the 2nd story bedroom, with the factory French doors able to open to greet the day.  It was always a bit nerve racking going beneath underpasses, although an interesting perspective while traveling on the highway lounging about the 2nd story.

I had a really unique Snodgrass custom chillum Bob made for me at the Ruch barter faire that I had allowed to travel freely throughout the Philzone, I was told security purposely broke it on the edge of a metal trash can...Bob bicycled it back to his shop, repaired it, then returned it to the lot.

I thought Jerry was in particularly good form that weekend, those were special days.

My 5th show...nothing like shows in Eugene.

My last shows, good times!

Karma hit during those shows and we ended up stuck in Eugene for a few days after.   A group of us were traveling in my friend's VW microbus and we were selling beers during the run.  We bought the beer at a nearby supermarket and hauled it back to the lot in a shopping cart.   Rather than taking the shopping cart back to the store, we dumped it into a ditch.  After the shows were over and it was time to move on, the microbus wouldn't start and my friend placed the blame squarely on us ditching the shopping cart.  She was pissed.  Actually, getting stuck in Eugene until the van was fixed wasn't that bad and we even did a side trip down to Roseburg to see David Grisman play in a park.

Nothing like hometown shows - especially in Eugene.

Bryen I remember that double-decker bus so well!

The lot was so fun at Autzen I usually took my time going in and missed first song.... and Cracker was the opener for this final Autzen run, so I for sure stayed in the lot.

My crew stayed at that row of hotels on Franklin Blvd (the Best Western New Oregon was at one end) near that cool hot tub place that was on a tiny street just behind the hotels.

My friend's dog got hit by a car (luckily, only a minor injury) in the hotel lot, so much drama when everyone was trippin.

If we were doing day trips, we'd park across the Willamette River, and take Knickerbocker Bicycle Bridge to the stadium...  a short, and quite lovely walk, then boom, mass humanity, lol

Just a really fun time all the way around.

Interesting -- was lot camping not allowed that year?  Or was it printed on the tickets just for effect?

Saw that too.   Camping was in full effect.  As was vending.  Probably just boilerplate language.

Probably just stated that in an effort to scare off the riff-raff. I recall at least a few shows (Alpine & Deer Creek in particular) that had tickets which also clearly stated "Parking Included" only to be hit up for parking fees upon arrival. Goes to show you dont ever know.

Thanks -- I have those tickets buried somewhere in my closet, time to pull those out... been working on image organizing lately.

I did love walking over to the stadium on the trails from Campus Inn side too -- bam -- from forest to fun times!

A far cry from Autzen '93 but there were fine moment of inspiration. Garcia in an ebullient mood yet not quite able to kick it to the upper gear.

And it did rain. Not sprinkly dinkly. Big drops, consistent.

Nice to be able to drive home (one hour) after each show, shower, dinner, sleep in own bed. Was at all 10 Autzen shows - the '90 ones were the best, IMO, Dylan one in '87 the worst, but they all had something to offer.

Agree, Autzen Dylan was most definitely the worst one!

The first one in '78 must've been fun... w/ Santana, Outlaws and Eddie Money!  (I wouldn't have guessed Eddie Money.)

My first Autzen was 88, after driving up from SF the day before for the Tacoma Dome with Santana.  I think I heard Jack Straw before falling asleep.

I was at the Tacoma Dome show too... the wooden dome... was looking forward to good acoustics.

I enjoyed Santana but don't remember the GD sets as particularly sharp, however, it was a Brent show and he sang Never Trust a Woman, so that was a rare listen for me.

The only Space-->Touch Of Grey (I think).

Disco Stu, Twister was performed a year earlier, I believe.  Huey Lewis was in it and performed with the GD at Autzen on 8/21/93 adding  harmonica to Good Morning Little Schoolgirl>Smokestack Lightnin'.  I was in the middle of moving from Virginia to Humboldt County and caught these shows on the way.  I was back in '94, and went to Cal Expo, Seattle and Shoreline too.

I didn't mind Cracker.  The Dead's soundcrew had them set up their own soundboard in front of the Dead's board, which they would quickly disassemble and clear out after Cracker's set.  We would wedge ourselves right in front of Cracker's board during their set, then wind up with primo front of board turf for the Dead's sets when the space was cleared.

I was there.  Kesey was parked next to us in his red Cadillac convertible for one of the nights.   My first trip to Eugene.  Wonderful weekend.

Did anyone else here see the dust devils  twisting in the wind, sending tents flying  near Kesey's Bus? Or was that just me?  laugh

...Speaking of buses in GD lots of days past, can anyone here explain the deal surrounding that big dark red bus in very good condition (that I think also had a VW bus top welded onto its top) that seemed to make nearly every show/stop? I stopped in one time early in my GD days and did not get an entirely easy feeling. A dude I ran across near its front door invited me in and seemed insistant that I was tripping hard and needed help, of which I was not and did not. I later picked up a pamphlet they were handing out which seemed to closely resemble those of a Jehovah's Witness bend - it featured a Jerry-like figure engulfed in fire and something to affect of "get saved". It seemed cultish and had a reborn air about it as did the many younger "follower" hangers on whom would oftentimes dance around holding hand in a circle.

The Yashuas?

>>>>>(that I think also had a VW bus top welded onto its top)

Bry's a Yashua?

That would explain a few things.

The Yashua cult were (maybe they still exist?) out of Mass. and if you got indoctrinated you would wind up in their Soap factory working for beans and rice.

Yeah they were at every show but I don't think they went in.  Just there to recruit new cult members.

Besides the soap factory I think they had a restaurant or two.

Yup, that's a cult and I've heard what Stu said Re: working for next to nothing for these assholes.

They started doing Dylan tours also; they were in front of the BG Civic handing out their bullshit flyers and

my friend went up to the guy and started grilling him.

"You guys still recruiting young girls and making them work for nothing? Why do you do that? Why are you handing out this

bullshit outside of the shows", and more until the guy took off.

Fuck that bottom-feeding scum.

Sounds about right. They seemed kinda sleezy and overtly proud to have young wayward hippie chicks laying around their little spot too. Sickos.

Fuck. Almost as bad as those crazy mormons. LOL

There's a show on I think Vice about cults and one episode is about them. They started in Tennessee in the early 70's. Now have communes all over the world.

Fuckin' weirdos. It is difficult trying to understand how people get roped into those ponzi scams...oftentimes with organized religion included, sadly. Not much different than the pay-for-pray TeleVangelical bunch. 700 Club provided some good laughs over the years anyhow.

I did happen to check out the interior of the aforementioned Bay State bus in East Rutherford, although I always thought they were from Vermont, the interior woodwork was impressive...absolutely "over the top" craftsmanship.

When the conversation turned religious I mentioned I was an old fashioned Irish Catholic, the discussion seemed to end shortly thereafter.

In regards to the twelve tribes...which perhaps shouldn't be requisition as a website, have you become knowledgeable about the vegetarian tribe?

Has anyone here researched or discovered the Essenes?

They were vegetarian...not out of necessity, but for value of life.

"In the 18th and 19th centuries, some scholars theorized that Jesus might have been associated with the Essenes, but that theory has since been generally abandoned."

By definition, "generally" indicates not absolutely.

For sure, that bus is/was super stylie inside and fully decked out in wood and fairly lavish furnishings as well. It must have weighed a healthy sum.

Thanks for that link, Bryen! It took me straight to a Biden ad

It did, not the only thing I may have had issue with, there's a lot to discover...it's interesting to think that Jesus may have been a vegetarian.

If I thought for a moment Joe Biden was the best choice to lead America forward I'd be shouting it at the top of my lungs from the highest mountain.

I'll probably write in Ron Paul for the 4th cycle in a row...out of principle, he's the only politician I ever felt as if I'd take a bullet for.

T.O.D.

Kiva is one of the stores I shop at and they provide call-ahead parking lot pick up, New Day Bakery (also World Cafe) is still happening, and Saturday Market just got a late start to the season with some new ways of doing things (Covid). Genesis went through a lot of changes a few years ago and I wonder if they're still going (I don't drink juice).

Fuck the OCA and fuck TROJAN's work is "done".

Still a great place to live.

so you served eugene?

Trump is the duly elected president, there should be some reverence for the office...for the presidency.

The Oval Office meeting of January 5th, 2017 was treason pure & simple...research it.

     Treason

     trea·son  (trē′zən)

     n.

     1. The betrayal of allegiance toward one's own country, especially by committing hostile acts against it or aiding its enemies in committing such acts.

     2. The betrayal of someone's trust or confidence.

Was that the meeting Trump had with Putin's top henchmen? The one were they were photographed all laughing uproariously?

The one where the American press were barred from that part of the White House but Russian press were allowed to be there?

That one?

     ...different meeting

Wow you Rump fiends just ruin any sort of thread.

Shouldn't you be making little statuettes and icons of your TV idol,  rather than piss on an Autzen 1994 dialogue ?

I'll dig up some Orange crayons for you, OK ?

I was responding to the 8:55 post, I concur...Eugene is a beautiful scene, the herb always seems a little wet, but there are a lot of nice vegetarian restaurants.

Anyway here's why I think the performance of "Twister"  I attended was in 1994...
Article in link below shows the premiere after 1993 Autzen GD show,  but at the Armory.

https://moderndrama.utpjournals.press/doi/abs/10.3138/md.43.3.453

The one I attended was definitely at EMU on U of O campus.

twister.jpg

There's a graphic from May 1994 showing that they had "Twister"  on the road at that point.

Also my pal Amanda from Canada was at that performance (then residing in SLO or Santa Barbara) and somehow I think it was during the 1994 Autzen run.  In 1994 I lived in Eugene not far from U of O campus, and went to the shows with various other people or rode my bike there one night.

1993 I lived in Corvallis and rode cars there with various people.

Also "Jambay"  had a pre GD show out at Dexter Lake in 1994,  with the Prankster family Stage truck.

So really I've got no empirical evidence,  just vague recollections from 25 + years back.  Probably have a flyer, program or stub in some dusty archival box somewhere.

I was there all three nights.. and rode on the bus to the twister test over at the EMU.. man there was some good acid at these shows.
