Are there any good "places" to eat in San Francisco?

Forums:

I'll be there for a few days "soon"

I wonder if he actually says " re: " in verbal conversations.

Get the pizza, it's better than NY!

Cool. Thanks. I was looking at The Progress because the state bird is closed for renovation.

Made reservations at Gary Danko and Slanted Door.

Would love some other low cost options also.

An old friend and neighbor of mine moved to SF to be head chef at the Thirsty Bear in the Mission. Good place.

There are plenty of places to get "food", but you get what you pay for.

I Don't Think Low Cost and San Francisco Mix Ever !

Haven't been there in ages, but "lucky creation" in Chinatown was always a favourite

Anyone been to Californios?

>I Don't Think Low Cost and San Francisco Mix Ever !

where do the servers eat?

where do the servers eat? <<<<

At Home = Top Ramen budget - da Rents are Too Damn High !

Used to love eating at House of Nanking....in the early nineties.

Is Thirsty Bear still a tapas place?  I'd say that was more in South of Market, rather than The Mission.  Of course, I'm not from "Frisco" so I could be wrong about so many things.

I'm not sure if I've eaten at any SF restaurant within the last 10 years.

Yea, might be in SoMa...been a while.

Yes, still tapas.

Lots of new ramen places in SF, Orenchi is good and you don't have to wade into Valencia St tech yuppie gauntlet. Also Nojo, Iza, Ken Ken

Tommy Joynt (hof-brau) Lamb Shanks (Thursday & Sunday), $3.25 sausage sandwiches (every day).

HRD (Korean, Asian fusion) fusion burritos

Deli Board (Cleveland deli) Best sandwiches (Boca) in bay area. They bake there own rolls. Close by 3pm

Tacolicious (any location)

Soma Street Food Park (rotating food truck park) food truck village with plenty of seating and cocktails.

Lou's Fish Shack (Jazz & Blues, Cajun/Creole, Seafood)

Mission Chinese (Lung Shan restaurant) Kung Poa Pastrami, Thrice Cooked bacon

Nan King Road Bistro - Crispy Sesame Chicken (not your average sesame chicken, Hot & Spicy)

Eating on bay (water views of SF bay)...

Pier 23 - Duck Poppers

Mission Rock Resort - crab mac & cheese

The Ramp

High end food in high rise towers...

Harry Denton's Starlight Lounge

Top of Mark

Breakfast/Brunch...

Mama's on Washington Square

Dottie's True Blue Cafe

Lori's Diner (Sutter street location, Union Square, 1950's diner)

Awesome ! Oakster !!

I live in SF and have for most of the 30 years I've lived out West.

To be honest - I rarely eat out cause between the cost of my mortgage and nightlife seeing shows - I consider it a grand scale rip off.

Sol Food in San Rafael

I liked it.

Thanks guys. I really appreciate it.

Are you going to see pharoah sanders at sfjazz treble ?

I wonder if he actually says " re: " in verbal conversations<<<

No, but I often say "i.e."

lol @ cozying up -- slash -- joining forces with bro

Zazie in the Haight for brunch is good. The wait will be long but they will come in get you from the bar next door Finnegan's Wake. Both places have a nice outdoor area in back

Even the shitty-est Thai soup lunch joint w/grease running down the side of the wall from the vent fan is 1000x better than any Thai food on the east coast.

But yeah, the Pizza, LMAO.  Sourdough ain't Pizza dough.  & Mex cheeze doesn't belong on a Pizza.  Nor do Avocado's.

SF is done. over. forget about it kid.

Swan Oyster Depot on Polk st

Hog Island Oyster Bar in Ferry Bldg

Il Pollaio in North Beach

Farmer Brown a stone's throw from the Warfield

Sunrise Deli Sunset & Financial District

"Enjoy!"

Just go to Avatars in Saucelito. 20 mins outside the city

There's plenty of Thai places in NYC that are great, actually. There was a good Thai place the fiancé and I went to in Larkspur, CA last time. Can't remember the name.

Can I go to Gary Danko with you?!

House of Prime Rib is a quintessential SF experience

from the cocktails to table side service

Low cost -

dim sum along clement st.

Burma super star on clement- a classic

sushi zone on pearl alley off market st in Castro area

Foreign Cinema in the Mission

If you go to Marin side

I wouldn't eat at TXR

try Buckeye Roadhouse or Seafood Peddler in Sausalito, has epic views

willows you are crazy. pizza in SF is garbage compared to NYC...there are decent places, but nothing on the level of a place like difara's...not even close

best ramen in SF and most likely in the entire USA is at Mensho Tokyo...hands down without question. also, ippudo just opened in berkeley and is very, very good. other ramen-ya of note are; shiba ramen(oakland), ramen shop(oakland), izakaya sozai(sf/sunset) and hinodeya(sf/japantown). i could take or leave orenchi beyond, personally. something was lost in translation between the sf shop and their south bay flagship.

lots of great sushi here - i like kusakabe in sf or sushi sho in el cerrito - but not low cost at all.

gary danko will be great and is very old school. recommendations - seared foie or foie torchon, juniper crusted bison, quail stuffed with foie, cheese plate

californios, from what i hear is great food but very small portions and overall a small meal - one of my pet peeves as far as pricey tasting menus so i have skipped it.

the most influential restaurant in the country is right across the bay bridge...chez pannise. not the best, or most innovative, at least not anymore, but very very good, and with a permanent place in the culinary history of the USA...they basically invented the farm to table movement that has worked its way into all kinds of eateries in all cities across the country.

camino in oakland is very good.

i used to work at shiba ramen in oakland as of just 6 months ago or so, and helped fine tune many of the bowls there and added alot of my own technique to how the broth is made. the shoyu/dark is the best. pickles and pork chashu pie are also solid.

kronnerburger in oakland served me the best hamburger i have ever had in my life, by a mile. they have also served me burgers that are good but nothing special. as of a year or so ago, the last time i went, they had serious issues with consistency. but when they are on top of their game...holy mother of god...i never knew a burger could be so good. don't get cheese - it detracts from the incredible dry aged beef. i always get cheese on burgers...but this is different...way better w/o cheese...bacon is acceptable.

the ferry building is fun and has great food. check it out, preferably saturday morn during the farmers market. there is a mushroom shop there called far west fungi that has a tiny little freezer in the back of their shop with some odds and ends, and some candy cap ice cream made by local creamery humphrey slocombe's. humphrey's has issues with their texture, it can be a bit icy...but the flavor on that candy cap ice cream is just beyond words.

state bird provisions is fucking incredible, what an experience.

tommy's joynt, wise sons, and sauls(berkeley) all have solid pastrami.

august 30th is a wagyumafia popup at the sushi spot called omakase...all courses contain absurd amounts of A5 wagyu beef imported from japan, and dinner will set you back FIVE HUNDRED AND NINTEY FIVE FUCKING DOLLARS

when you are in SF you've gotta have an SF mission burrito...the burrito most people are framiliar with due to chipotle - meat, rice, beans, salsa, guac, cheese, crema, in a large tortilla wrapped in foil - is called the SF mission burrito and was invented here. its regional cuisine here, not mexican food. i reccomend taqueria cancun or la taqueria.

nopa is solid.

daylight's list way better than oaksterdam which is like a 2005 (or 1995) tourist book restaurant list. No offense but

Willows was being sarcastic about the pizza

I love your list and info, daylight.

Are you bringing a suit, Chacho?

Prime rib in a suit sounds nice. Maybe a whiskey and a cigar.

>Are you bringing a suit, Chacho?

no

thanks everyone

I really appreciate it

On my cross country train trip to Chinese New Year in 1991, some hotty wrote "house of Nanking- China town" on a napkin as dinner recommendation

Could that hotty have been you, Johnny?!

Daylight, it was an obvious fucking joke.

idk, there is some good pizza here. if you'd been to some of our best spots and only been to nyc once and had a few slices of "good-but-not-great" pizza it would be an understandable opinion to have...ive heard people enter vegan pizzas into "best pizza" threads on the zone so ive pretty much prepared myself for anything as far as pizza on the philzone is concerned

Sorry, but, I've been to the Bay Area & other Norcal areas dozens of times over the decades (all for GD & related shows) & had many many many pizza's recommended by locals & advertised as "Real NYC thin crust" etc etc, they have 1000% of the time been:  Thick & gooey, with Sourdough crust, Mexican cheese, Orange, way too sweet tomato sauce, & piled way too high w/weird toppings (even when I ordered "plain").  Of course last time I traveled to the bay area was 2004 so MAYBE things have finally changed . . . I sure would hope so . . .

& I mean, I'm a fan of Sourdough bread, & Mexican cheese, & even Avocado's, but, NOT ON FUCKIN' PIZZA!!!!!!!!!

I never had a life changing slice in NY. It was a bit disappointing, really. That said..NY bagels? Holy shit!

Someone sold bob a quesodilla and told him it was pizza.

Lol!

I like Daylight's list.

Generic as it may seem - last night I had a great Sushi Meal at a Warakabune - one of those Sushi Boat places on Church Street at 15th near Market.

The quality was very good - but it's easier to drop fitty bucks here  in a heartbeat....

nice daylight - I want one of those burgers !

I Like Shredded Lettuce On Burgers - Like The Famous " JALAMA BURGER " at Jalama Beach

http://jalamabeachstore.com/jalamenu.html

Wakarubne is pretty good but Sushi Zone, 1815 Market Street is at the top of the list.

Plf, I once had a zoner bark at me for talking about Jalama and surfing tarantulas.  He was worried I would crowd his secret spot......
