Anyone listen to John Prine?

Forums:

I like what little I've heard.

He ain't hurtin' nobody.  He ain't hurtin' noone.

Saw him front row center at the Fox in Oakland last year.  He is an amazing songwriter, picker, and story teller.  Lots of good stuff to listen too.

Yup.

I blew up my Tv...threw away my paper...moved to the country...And now, I eat a lot of peaches...I also ain't got laid in a month of Sundays but thats a different tune...

Best advice from a song I have yet to receive...

Yeah.  I have a Pandora station that pretty much just plays him and Lyle Lovett.

John Prine is one of the best. Glad you're getting around to hearing him.

Thanks to a few Zoners, I had a great seat for his performance at HSBF in October. See it here.  http://www.hardlystrictlybluegrass.com/2017/webcast/?mrid=114092

He's got plenty on You Tube, and this one, "Burn One with John Prine" is from Kacey Musgraves   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6A-pRJxCKR8

With Iris DeMent    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5axlwCBXC8     With Steve Goodman   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aOTbg39-I5Q

Thread reminds me of a story. Park West, Utah.

Jackson Browne played and we waited after to meet Jackson. I went to my car and got my guitar for him to sign.

I waited until folks yacked with him a while then asked if he'd autograph my guitar. "A guitar? Sure man."

Brought the guitar out and some guy noticed the other signatures. "Who else is on there?" he asked.

Not wanting to go through the 13 names at the time (now over 40) I said "Well, John Prine for one".

He said "Who's John Prine?". Jackson immediately stopped what he was doing, looked at this guy, and asked incredulously "You don't know who John Prine is?"

Lots of good stories getting that guitar signed. That's one of the most memorable.

Saw him  at The Chance in the early 80's.

Big fan ever since.

Prine is an American Treasure!

John Prine is my other Bob Dylan.

Christmas in Prison

John Prine

LYRICS

It was Christmas in prison and the food was real good
We had turkey and pistols carved out of wood
I dream of her always even when I don't dream
Her name's on my tongue and her blood's in my stream.

Wait a while eternity
Old Mother Nature's got nothin' on me
Come to me, run to me, come to me now
I'm rollin' my sweetheart
I'm flowin' by God

She reminds me of a chess game with someone I admire
Or a picnic in the rain after a prairie fire
Her heart is as big as this whole goddamn jail
And she's sweeter than saccharine at a drug store sale

Wait a while eternity
Old Mother Nature's got nothin' on me
Come to me, run to me, come to me now
I'm rollin' my sweetheart
I'm flowin' by God

The search light in the big yard turns 'round with the gun
And spotlights the snowflakes like the dust in the sun
It's Christmas in prison there'll be music tonight
I'll probably get homesick, I love you, Good night

Wait a while eternity
Old Mother Nature's got nothin' on me
Come to me, run to me, come to me now
I'm rollin' my sweetheart
I'm flowin' by God

Yes, great stuff.

"please don't bury me, in the cold cold ground.."

I love John Prine!

I picked up Prine's new book "Beyond Words" as a Christmas gift for my girlfriend.

Don't say nothing to her about it just yet.

I bought the book at Terrapin Station.

love him.  "Don't cost very much but it lasts a long while"

Prime Prine. Love the man. I read that Lake Marie is Dylan's favorite Prine song. I like it too.

We enjoy John here at our house.

Love his version of Clay Pigeons.

down by the green river, where paradise lay

John Prine digs Kacey Musgraves.  Wise man.  Check her out.  Similar bare bones, but sharp and witty pen.

john prine used to live 5 houses down the street from me when i was a kid. helluva songwriter. you could hear him playin on warm summer nights when the windows were open. long road for him but he had  a grate work ethic and belief in himself.an american master.

Powerful and sad.

You know that old trees just grow stronger

And old rivers grow wilder everyday

Old people just grow lonesome

waiting for someone to say

Hello in there

Hello.

John's been an amazing writer for a lot of years. So many masterful songs. Classics.

I’m a Prine Fan. He still tours, i think. Fun songs to Sing and jam on the acoustics and stringed instruments round a fire.

John Prine is an amazing songwriter- an American treasure for sure.

Looks like Prine co-wrote a new one, "Waiting On a Song," with Dan Auerbach:

The video runs for about a minute before the song starts. Pretty good little tune.

Just got this yesterday. A tour, a new album coming, and a video from Bill Murray.
