Any New Paltz Zoners recall this 1981 incident?

Forums:

Wondering if one particular Zoner has some commentary on this photo?

The same hairpin turn from the other direction ...  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qwNhVvPPZOg

No but I remember the Thruway bridge collapse over Scoharie not too many years after

Yes. I remember it well. I had my 1973 Blue Duster parked on the hairpin turn next to Mrs. Widmark and her Honey truck. Nelson had the camera, we and just came upon the scene after a hike from there to the Skytop and back, I took the photos. Nelson dropped the film at the SUB Oracle office and that is my first published photo. Anything you want to know specifically?

Lol! Howard for the win!

Noticed that you were credited on the photo Howard. Just a shout out. Happy Thanksgiving to all

There is now a trail called "Blunder Bus" near that location

Wacky photo. "Failed to navigate a turn," but disaster narrowly averted.

Bob Weir got his car stuck like that dangling off a cliff at the Red Rocker's house in Marin one night.  Fortunately, Bob, his lady companion, and his jar of nugs were able to escape to safety.

Was it a "Short Line" Bus ?  I remember those running all over when I was a kid visiting Upstae NY,  they ran all over the place.

Edited to delete non - requested spacing.

"The bus came by and we flew on"...

I believe the Granite Hotel is where I took my first ski turn off a rope tow in the '70s

When I saw the pic I thought it was a bad bus trip to Mohonk House.

Happy Thanksgiving to you Don and all the PZ.

Last Spring I was coming off the mountain, going in the same direction as the fateful bus, I came to the hairpin turn and saw there was a passenger car wedged under the guardrail with the top partially sheared off. That car was heading up 44/55 and 'failed to navigate' the hairpin turn. There were no jam the brakes skid marks. They probably hit the 5 mph switchback going 55 and just went straight into and under the steel guardrail, fortunately stopped by the stone retaining wall. A few cars had already stopped to render assistance. I had my camera and for a second, thought, should I take photos, I decided once was enough. On the way past the Brauhaus, an ambulance and two NYS Troopers passed me going up and heading to the accident scene.

Reminds me of this incident from December 19, 2008 on Capitol Hill here in Seattle when we had an ice storm that paralyzed the city for a couple of days.

Stu... still lots of Short Line busses on the road. They have a hub in Newburgh. As best I can tell the bus hanging out in the pic was a charter.

Searched for a while for a news article, with no success

A local retired firefighter shared this angle  Blunder bus_0.jpg

Good photo Howard.

Hey, at least they got free Big Macs!

Yeah I had Aunts /  Uncles / Cousins in the area around Monticello and Liberty NY up in the Catskill region.  It was always fun to visit for a while,  and then I would get a five dollar Short Line bus ticket to go back home.

All back in the '60's 70's 80's era,  and then everyone moved to Florida.

But you could be in the Middle of nowhere up there,  really hick.
They had a Farm out there a few miles out an unmarked Dirt road,  nobody but cows around.

That pic reminds me of the end of the movie The Italian Job starring Michael Caine from 1969. Just saw it on TV a few days ago.

Don, In the climber book photo, that's me with my back to the camera in the flannel shirt. I was not able to leave until the wreckers and the Troopers were finished.

As far as the free Big Macs at MickyD's, they could have taken them all to Taco Don's instead, but they would have needed to stope a few more times on the way home. Thanks for noticing my photo. The 40th anniversary was this past Feb. I probably missed a Garcia Band concert that night because of the Blunder Bus. H2

That is such a cosmic burp, Howard, to run into two different photos linked to you at the 40 year mark.  Nice.

"Howard Johnsons"  would have been a better choice compared to McD's ... they actually made decent Burgers / Fries back in the day. HoJo had locations all over NY state and Jerseyland.  They had a bunch of spots on the NJ Turnpike 'rest stop' through the 1970's and a bit beyond.

My cousin Terry worked at one,  I think Monticello NY as a High School job.  She would pack an extra - large Ice Cream Cone for us kids !!

At some point the NJ HoJos turned into Saverins - no bueno.

Parents used to take us to a few of the ones in MA ca. 1960.

I was at the Garcia Band shows the week before, Palladium, Capitol Passaic and Calderone in Hempstead. No way I would have made the Stone show on 2/22/81 in SF. https://jerrygarcia.com/show/1981-02-22-the-stone-san-francisco-ca/.

I saw at the tour opener at the Warner Theater in DC. Great show. From my experience JGB shows were grate opening night.

Yes, I admit to liking Howard Johnson's; clearly, because have still have these cans from the '70's.

Wow awesome pop cans.  I would love to see the ingredient list on the cola and Ginger Ale.
Bet there's no HFCS just Sugar,  I don't think HFCS  appeared in soda until much later,  something about tariffs and Sugar embargo...

Nice article about the rise and fall of HoJo.  I didn't realize they had Lobster on the menu through the early '70's ??
Here's a 1973 menu - Chicken dinner for a buck or char-broiled Sirloin with Rings,  Salad,  Roll and Beverag for $1.50

My maternal grandmother lived in southern Connecticut, and when I spent the weekend with her when I was a kid, she would take me to HoJo's for dinner on Saturday night. We always had the fried clams.

NRBQ knew what was up down at the HoJo's.

I think the "1973" menu above is actually 50's - era.

Here's a 1950's cocktail menu - 25 and fifty cent cocktails,  20 cent Beers, $6 for a decent bottle of champagne...

Going to the Hamden HoJo was a big day for me as a kid. They had a wicker peacock chair that was everything to me
