I did the free two week trial and was able to get a lot of useful information from it, which I cut and pasted into a Word document. Was able to trace one branch of the family tree back to the 1400s. I believe its run by the LDS, who are really, really into genealogy.
The real trick is canceling the subscription before the two weeks are up. I think I had to click on 12 different buttons asking me if I really wanted to cancel.
Wife and I did the DNA kit. Surprises - no French or German. I was hoping for some more Neanderthal or Mongolian, but no such luck. Wife, who is "black" Irish, found that she was 5% Jewish.
No subscription was involved, but they do keep trying to get you to buy or subscribe to this and that.
>> Can they data mine your DNA and sell it to the dark net?
Yes.
...we do use and share aggregate information with third parties in order to perform business development, initiate research, send you marketing emails and improve our services.
Aggregate information has been stripped of your personal details (e.g., your name and contact information) and aggregated with the information of others so that you cannot reasonably be identified as an individual.
Their business model seems like a metaphor for what's wrong with our culture. All of our DNA is 99.9% similar and their business model is to alert you to the differences. And the set of differences they sell you is regional history which people incorrectly and unscientifically approximate as race. I've seen people use it as a racial purity test.
Fuck this big data precursor to Eugenics. We are all human.
I dunno if I'd do it. I've lived my entire life assuming I am 100% French Canadian. All 4 of my grandparents were/are hardcore French Canadians.. I'm afraid I'll get some surprises back.
Keep in mind that Ancestry.com and Ancestrydna.com are two different animals. Ancestry gives youccess to records/family trees, etc. Ancestrydna is the DNA testing. I currently have a six month subscription to Ancestry, which I won't renew. I did the Ancestry DNA testing about two years ago. The breakdown of regions is pretty much spot on to what I understood my heritage to be. I've been able to contact several cousins and learn a little bit about my family history. It's been helpful to me but not incredibly informative.

We bought my mom and dad each
We bought my mom and dad each a kit for fathersday/mothersday
Interesting results. My last name and heritage assigned to it is represented by less than 10 % on my dads side.
Also, if you are 1% Sardinian , like myself, Um , I guess I'm like .5%, you'll wanna know about that.
Either way, with DNA like mine, I expect to be rounded up at any time. History repeats itself just like DNA....

Got a kit for Christmas, spit in the tube and mailed it.
Definitely surprised by the results so I'm trying the free trial for a month.
Finding some interesting stuff.
They found my brother and some cousins right away, so it seems their results are good, especially for close matches.

What happens to your DNA
What happens to your DNA after you give it to the people doing these. Can they data mine your DNA and sell it to the dark net?
i can’t imagine the horror I’d feel if I came back as any percentage Italian. I’d be devastated. Questions would need to be answered.

You can also download your raw DNA data (which I haven’t done yet).
You can then upload it to other sites (some of which are free) for comparison.
Ancestry lets you delete your raw data from their site.
