The Allman Brothers Band to Celebrate 50th Anniversary With Tribute Show – Rolling Stone
https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/allman-brothers-band-reuni...

How can they do a reunion without dickey, butch or Greg?

Or Duane and Berry, for that matter.

That means Oteil and Warren and Derek Trucks are in the area on 3/10, just ahead of Phil's 80th :-)

How can they call it the Who w/o Keith n John ?

How can they call it Pink Floyd w/o Waters ?

Questions, questions, questions, flooding into the mind of the concerned young person today.

If this is a reunion of all band vets mixed in with a few of the offspring this could be epic. Johnny Neel's still around, he's a band vet who plays a mean B3, Duane Betts is the real deal. This is gonna be fun

Too much slide.

The Stones without Wyman

CNN reported the Grateful Dead played NYE but even Slacker knows Jerry died in '95.

Slacker thinks ABB is too Southern in their rock. He prefers it gentle and clean.

Just read the story and they are calling themselves simply "The Brothers."   Jaimoe will be the only original member in this lineup.   Now if Dickey Betts showed up, that would be something.  Still will be an awesome night of music, but not ABB.

They could be edgy and be Brothers and Company. Or, BroCo.

Dickey is incapable of playing.  Jaimoe will get there but won't necessarily play.

Personally I'm very much down with this news.

According to the article. Dickey received an invitation but turned it down because of "prior commitments". That seems like bullshit. I doubt he has any professional commitments these days. Either, he is still on such uncomfortable terms with his former band mates that he won't do it, or his health and playing abilities are so compromised that he physically can't do it, or both. I'm a huge Dickey fan, so it's disappointing.

Warren and Derek have been pretty transparent on there opinions of Dickey Betts.  I would not blame an elder drunk for not wanting to put himself out there with guys who think he is a piece of shit as a person

^ Not sure of the correctness of your statements. Warren loves the man who brought him into the Brothers.

Ever heard Pattern Disruptive ?

Derek + Susan also seem to have genuine affection for brother Dickey too. And I got nuthin but love for him. Show me someone not flawed and I'll show ya, well I can't think of anything

Dickey Betts Sits-In With Tedeschi Trucks Band On This Date In 2013

Gonna be a great show- wish I could make it.

>>Show me someone not flawed and I'll show ya, well I can't think of anything

There's flawed, and there's coked out alcoholic wife beating, gun and knife pulling tyrant band leader flawed.

Wow you must be really close to him and the band to make them kinda accusations. Tell us more man. I always thought after Duane passed Gregg was the coked out alcoholic rat on the manager bastard of the band, and if not for Dickey pulling em thru those days, the brothers would have just died out.  And the band's renaissance in the 80's was mostly due to Dickey's brilliant songwriting and playing not to mention it was his decision to have Warren join the band. Fuck bro his bad behavior must have been some bad ass'n fuel, cuz the music that version of the band made is the fucking grail, nothing they did after his departure could come close. But shit I only cared about the music anyway, not the drama. What other stones ya got to throw ?

The Brothers?

It sounds like some expensive suits came up with a good idea and got into a few ears.

"Look at Lynyrd Skynyrd! Look at Fare Thee Well!! Look at Dead & Company!!! The crowds are there!!! The Brothers will sell sheds, arenas, STADIUMS!!!!"

And even without a single original member they probably could if marketed properly, while none of those guys (except Oteil) can do that now.

I bet this isn't going to be a one-off.

Trucks Bros Band

For all the stone chuckers -

Interesting SRV intv near the end of his life where he talks frankly about his battles with alcoholism. Not cool throwing stones at someone unless you've  walked in their shoes. Not fucking cool in the least.

Classic interview: Stevie Ray Vaughan talks Texas blues, Strats and addiction | MusicRadar
https://www.musicradar.com/news/classic-interview-stevie-ray-vaughan-tal...

Hahahaaaaa zoner spek-a-lation on this show announcement - pretty fucking lame ass shit from some sorry ass flat tires

classic zoning going on in here.  gotta know someone would give Betts the person a pass due to Betts musical talents.  no need for me to walk in Betts shoes to know he is a piece of garbage human.  I have read the interviews and have heard enough validity to the stories about the dude to know he at least was once a piece of shit.  thats not stone throwing, thats calling out the truth and not laying up red herrings like Greg's own problems throughout time to quantify some other dudes behavior

Raz likes punching women. Hates narcs.

Regardless  -  this set has the potential to be a monster. - Don't look at who won't be there, look at who will.  The talent and chemistry on that stage will be immense.

Keep it gentle and clean in here for Slacker's sake, fellas. Southerners (of the USA) frighten him. Is he a narc? You decide.

He's at least the are Recess Monitor.

Sentences. How do they work?

>>>It sounds like some expensive suits came up with a good idea and got into a few ears<<<

I know that quoting oneself is bad form, but I just saw another article about this show that said Live Nation had posted some sort of image hinting at this event a while ago, so this is a Live Nation event.

Live Nation has no interest in one-offs, they're all about booking tours so I'm doubling my bet that some form of The Brothers is going to hit the road this summer, playing a LN shed near you.

Personally I wouldn't have much interest, but I'd go for free.

"...my bet that some form of The Brothers is going to hit the road this summer, playing a LN shed near you.

I feel the same way,  especially since I bought the Lawn-pass for Camden.  So far there's a handful of shows announced (mostly other nostalgia acts).
Chicago,  Journey,  Black Crowes,  Pretenders and Alanis M.  Not all on the same bill.

Camden shed has a light rail line right there that costs about 3 bucks R/T.  Plenty cheap and easy entertainment.  Might even get DeadCo and/or Phish there.  They typically have a couple dozen shows every season.  They even let you bring in a bit of food for the Picnic effect.

"Too much slide." -- music board veteran

>>>Too much slide<<<

A matter of personal taste, but with Derek Trucks & Warren I always felt it was too much slide, or too much something and not enough of something else.

I certainly didn't think it was too much slide when it was Duane & Dickey, or even Warren & Dickey.

I also always thought it was too much percussion and not enough classic AB drumming when Jaimoe faded and Marc Quinones would endlessly pound away.

It just never sounded like the Allman Brothers to me.

I don't think The Brothers will either.

^Yup

Good to see you on the black screen Mr. Tofu!

Thanks, Lance. Good to be here. Motivated by Phil's return to the stage!

Phil's the stick that stirs the drink.

So if The Brothers tour this summer with Oteil on bass, who plays bass for DeadCo?

Hmm...

Lemme see

who could play bass for DeadCo?

Hmm...

Originally it was supposed to be Mike Gordon ..and Kimock with mayer

So since it won't be Phil im going with mike gordon

This may explain why the DeadCo tour starts in Boulder on July 10 and only last for ten shows ending August 8. O'tiel will play with both bands.

So you're saying no Phil with DeadCo?

Damn. A kid can dream...

Mayer doesn't know all the complicated songs that Phil likes to play they would have to bring up John K to convince Lesh to get back on the road...and I think they would go back to calling the band 'the dead'

a kid can dream

I know it is 2020 and you are talking about Kadlecik, but when I read John K, I still tend to think it is about John Kahn.

Especially right now, as I'm listening to JGB 11/8/76 - Garcia Live Vol 7. So great!

If John Kahn came back from the great gig in the sky to play with Dead & Co., I'd go to the show.

Oh common' folks. Phil is not going to play with D&C for all the well-known reasons, and then add in why I believe Phil's birthday show isn't going to be at Madison Square Garden; he doesn't want or need the hassle of the BIG show, let alone any type of tour.

And Dead $ Company and The Brothers can easily be scheduled to tour separately, especially if they're both Live Nation tours... Oteil can & likely will do both.

Good for him, and good for D$C and The Brothers and the fans of both, because he's a damn good player.

But then I could be wrong about all this and The Brothers show will be a one-off celebration.

(But with Live Nation's greasy hands on this I'm not buying that)

Best thread on this board for a long time.  IMHO Dickey cannot play anymore.  The guy had a severe head injury.  This can have a permanent effect on coordination and stamina.  As far as the show goes; it will be well rehearsed and executed and very enjoyable for people who attended shows at the beacon, myself included.  The fact that all of these musicians will be in town is a fun coincidence that leaves us with a lot to imagine about who will be playing with phil just says later.  That probably deserves its own thread.

I will be attending this barring unforeseen circumstances

I can see "The Brothers" being at Lock'n and then you also have a supply of guitarists for Phil. I think that's a lock....

They'll play the same fests and Oteil can double dip.  Triple if he puts together an O&F lineup.

So here is my 2020 prediction:

"The Brothers" at MSG March 10>

+ Warren and Derek play with Phil at the Cap March 13-15

The Brothers" at Lock'n June 19-21

"The Brothers" get added to Peach July 3-5

+ Warren and Derek among others play with Phil at Lock'n

DeadCo tour July/August

"The Brothers" tour August/September

Ok, so standard non-platinum tickets for the floor, the lower bowl (100's), and until midway up the upper bowl (200's) are $293 with fees.

I was expecting high prices but this is utterly ricoculous

Warren and trucks would never have a had a tit to suck on witthout betts so I guess he could attack their character as well? Seeing as they've dry humped the allman brother corpse to death and all. Allman brothers post dickey has been so freaking boring

That seems reasonable Woz.

bwa

be good family

Damn, that's Beacon Theater pricing being applied at MSG.......curious to see how it sells......if it sells well that will seal the deal on touring, neither Warren or Derek can get that kind of coin with their respective bands.

>>So if The Brothers tour this summer with Oteil on bass, who plays bass for DeadCo?

Not Phil

The Brothers

best tribute band in the world , better than DSO or any local bar tribute band in your town, pass

That $ 293.00 ticket seems a bit much,  but there are many wealthy people in NYC area.

I'll go see them (The Bros) in Camden if that works out.

Sure,  I'll be on the Lawn eating a Cheese Steak,  but nice view of the Sunset over the Mighty Delaware River from there cheeky

>The Brothers" at Lock'n June 19-21

>"The Brothers" get added to Peach July 3-5

>+ Warren and Derek among others play with Phil

There's no doubt in my mind that this summer will be Allman's heavy.  Peach contract is already signed.  Lockin will be soon to follow.  Include the TTB and Mule with all the festival dates.

For all that are bagging on the later year Allmans go piss off.  Without Warren, Woody and Marc the Allmans would have been playing state fairs from the mid 80's until Greg and Dickey drank themselves to death.  Dickey won't be involved because he can't play anymore. It's that simple.   Warren & Derek have never said a bad word about Dickey - they've included him each and every time they could.  Dickey's not a good dude.  Leave it at that. If you want he could appear and take a big ole shit on his legacy by being lost in the music that he wrote?

Just to clarify . I wasn't attacking the "latter day ABB' and I don't think you were speaking directly to me. What I was trying to say is that this isn't the most recent version of that. It's one original member who for what ever reason can't play a whole show and a few others who were equal members of versions of ABB, that's fine but not what I would spend my money on ( especially the prices quoted above) I'm sure the shows will be good, and hope those who attend enjoy them just not for me

^^His legacy is already being trashed with a 50 yr "tribute" that's nothing more than a quick money grab. Not even technically their 50 yr anniversary lol.

I purchased a Peach Fest ticket at the 'Early Bird'  price and if "The Brothers"  appear that will be quite nice.

Already a great roster of Bands.

What I'm lacking is nearby parking pass.  Hope to work that aspect out before Peach.

Bruce - I was speaking in general terms to those that still think it's still 1971.

  >^His legacy is already being trashed with a 50 yr "tribute" that's nothing more than a quick money grab

If you think that this is a quick money grab think again. They'll be nothing quick about it.  And again -- Dickey is incapable of playing. The olive branch was extended and he refused on their last run. When dealing with two drunk ego driven assholes the one with the name Allman that sang the songs won out.

Nobody is bagging on the Warren/Woody years. That was the ABB rebirth! Early to mid 1990s they was my favorite touring band. After Warren & Woody left, the band lost momentum.

It may be true that Dickey can't play anymore, as his health is a mess, and he has been relatively inactive for a long time. I watched a video of his attempted comeback a few years ago. It was terrible, and sad to watch. That was before a mini stroke and a brain injury from a fall. Father time can be brutal. He probably won't regain his chops well enough to play well again. It may also be true that when he got fired, he was an alcoholic, coked up asshole who pissed a lot of people off and let his playing abilities deteriorate.  But...

After Dickey left, there were a couple of good years through the tour following Hittin' The Note, then after that they started to bore me. Obviously Derek Trucks is a great guitarist, and I've always appreciated Warren, but without Dickey there wasn't enough variety and contrast in the guitar sound. The uplifting, endorphin releasing Dickey Betts leads made me feel joyous, energized and want to get up and dance. I never felt like that at a Brothers show after he left. Post-Dickey was the Meat-in-your-Seat era. The band was playing well, I appreciated the chops, but it just wasn't very inspiring, or interesting anymore.

jonas, issumed so and stated as such but thought my first post could be misunderstood after rereading it

This thread needs more Zakk Wylde.

Well said, tofu. The meat in your seat era for sure. If you dance in front then please sit down

They'll be nothing quick  about it>>>

well it's one show so.... kinda the definition of quick

Wanee!!!!

I'm way overdue to see Warren again.  Derek & Oteil would be a nice bonus.

>>Well said, tofu. The meat in your seat era for sure. If you dance in front then please sit down

I also agree 100% with what you posted tofu - especially about what the ABB sound lost when they let Dickey go.

I am still somewhat aghast that Timpane and I agree on something...but...lol

>This thread needs more Zakk Wylde.

There's never enough Zakk.  Great player, that loves and knows the music,  and great sense of humor.  But yeah..not a great fit for the Allman's post Ozzy tours.

 >well it's one show so.... kinda the definition of quick

Ok.  Let's try this approach.  Think of MSG as the loss leader.  The unions, NYC, cost of the venue etc = a loss for a one night show. NO ONE is looking to lose money...  But...stay with me....if they book a bunch of gigs(already done) that make money coming off a successful MSG date(though that certain date was a loss) the backers will make MONEY!!  TADA!!!

Obese 50 somethings aren't dancing for anyone...never mind Dickey Betts.  I saw shows on every tour for the last 30 something years and if you want to imagine those shows as a dance fest with Dickey please do.  Possibly you mean when he played Blue Sky or Ramblin Man the people that only knew those songs would jump up but don't rewrite history.

You vill danz und you vill like it!

Dance nazis suck worse than chatters.

I don't know who Jonas thinks is imagining things or trying to rewrite history. Not me. I'm comparing the reality of ABB w Dickey to ABB w/o Dickey, both circumstances that actually happened, as I experienced them.

Does your snarky, condescending ass really think that people who would be inspired to get up and dance to ABB w Dickey are less familiar with the depth of the Allman Brothers catalog than more sedentary fans who went to a lot of shows during the latter era Warren/Derek version? Laughable!

I'll speak only for myself, as a thin 50 something who is very familiar with Allman Brothers tunes. I like to get up and shake my bony old man ass when I listen to good old Allman Brothers music with Dickey Betts. When I listen to post-Dickey ABB, it sounds like good blues and classic rock, but closer to Gov't Mule or Tedechi Trucks Band than the rounder, classic Allman Brothers sound they had with Betts.

Yes, I would be more inclined to dance to a ripping Jessica or Back Where It All Begins with Dickey than a latter era cover of Walk On Gilded Splinters or The Weight. if one could imagine such a thing. Yawn.

and... If I want to imagine something great that didn't happen, it would more live versions of Pegasus from any era! That was an underperformed song if there ever was one.

Pegasus was def a great and underplayed tune.

I think all you have to do to recognize the different and danceable ABB with Dickey vs. without Dickey is to compare a version of Southbound while Dickey was still in the band to a post Dickey version. Dickey  version swings. Period.

ABB?

Stick a pin in it.

Was once a great band. Now only 2 alive, and neither can play any more.

Let's move on.

Tofu hit the nail on the head. Dickey took the brothers to those slightly on/off key cosmic bluesy jazz spaces that, once he left, the band never came close to again. Love DB,  unenlightened rogue

Gambled all my money, pissed off all my friends.

Never thought I could sink so low, but now look at the shape I'm in

Love me when I least deserve it, because that's when I really need it  -

I guess there are enough millionaires in NYC to support a concert industry exclusively for the luxury class. $200 dollars a ticket is just ridiculous. Live Nation is out of control. Concerts are like sports now overpriced and not worth it sorry. I can see some real talent at a broadway show for cheaper

lol I'm going to vote for "MAY NOT"

lol??   Not sure how you find humor in this. I respect your opinion, but there's nothing funny about it.

The idea that the slow ticket sales in the upper decks of MSG would have anything to do with the Coronavirus is actually FUCKING HILARIOUS.

Let's see. Where did the Allman Brothers normally play in NYC? The Beacon Theater, a much smaller venue in Manhattan. And who in this band that's playing a much larger venue in NYC is actually from the original band? Jaimoe? Right.

And lets take a look on stubhub at the floor seats. People still want $300 for those. Are those seats protected against Coronavirus? No. If people weren't going to this show because they were afraid of Coronavirus, those seats would be cheap too.

https://www.stubhub.com/the-brothers-tickets-the-brothers-new-york-madis...

So yeah, Allman Brothers reunion poor sales have everything to do with playing a venue that's way too large for that show. Kind of like the ridiculous idea of having Phil's 80th at MSG.

CORONAVIRUS IS LIMITING ALLMAN BROTHERS REUNION TICKETS LOL THATS PROBABLY WHY NO ONE IS BUYING BLACK CROWES TIX TOO RIGHT

The show is sold out. Looks like scalpers gonna take a bath.

How many in attendance and onstage will be wearing face masks is the question.

"The Show Is Sold Out" really doesn't carry the weight it used to.

Show is not sold out. Boatload of tickets that were listed as "verified resale " last week are now showing as standard tickets.  But from the looks of the prices on StubHub yes the scalpers are taking a bath.

Fuck do I know, I get my music news from Jambase -

Wish that I had taken the Train up to Penn Station,  but nice hearing at home.  MSG used to be a  Fun venue,  but last time it was just too much hassle.

Thanks to the Intrepid Tapers :)

Just a Fukin' Great show from start to end!!!!!  So glad I made the trek!

Thanks for the youtube link, plf.

Sounds like a GREAT time. Nice to hear the great reviews. Glad they pulled it off. Here's the Jamband story with pics and videos.

https://jambands.com/news/2020/03/11/the-brothers-celebrate-50-years-of-...

I'd say it was the Almost Brothers. When they achieved lift off - especially in the 2nd set - it had that familiar intense sound. Although Duane isn't quite the freight train drummer his uncle was, he managed to keep it rolling well enough (with help from Marc and Jaimoe) to be worthy. Playing with WSP for a few years probably helped.

Good stuff.

I like Duane.  He killed it at that Melvin/Oteil/THam holiday Jerry thing.

Also, I think he's Jimmy Herring's son-in-law?

Derek Trucks Is So SWEET On Melissa............

That Whipping post was pretty fucking intense!
