All You Need Is Love.

Forums:

I heard something today about that Beatles song that I'd never heard before and was wondering if it was true. The song was written after John watched Bridge Over The River Kwai and was actually lifted from a scene in which William Holden is on the Beach with a woman after swimming and says "all I need is love" and the woman responded "all you need is love."
Been too busy with some things like seeing my daughter for the first time since the pandemic to research it. Anyone else ever hear this?

The film was made in 1957, Big Deal I hear you say.
When this film was first aired on commercial TV in the USA, on Sunday night, Sept. 25, 1966, ABC-TV pre-empted its entire evening's schedule so the film could be aired in one night.
This was a major big deal at the time and the beatles who would have been on tour in the USA at the time would have heard about it. Although when finally screened the beatles had already left to do their Japan, Philippines Tour.
But because they were always stuck in the hotel room I have read they used to rent films and watch them. I would have loved to find out where he got the idea from.
People have said that this was wriiten just for the event of our world broadcast but this is not so as Paul explains:
"I don't think it was written specially for it. But it was one of the songs we had. [...] It was certainly tailored to it once we had it. But I've got a feeling it was just one of John's songs that was coming there. We went down to Olympic Studios in Barnes and recorded it and then it became the song they said, 'Ah. This is the one we should use.' I don't actually think it was written for it". - Paul McCartney

When I first saw this thread title I thought it might have been one of my old threads...anyways, you'll probably not believe this but I was watching the Bridge Over the River Kwai this afternoon and I recall that scene on the beach, he offers the officer a Martini after the girl goes for a swim.

It's important to realize there's nowhere you can be that isn't where you're meant to be...
