After briefly stopping in Japan and Hong Kong, Crowley reached Ceylon, where he met with Allan Bennett, who was there studying Shaivism. The pair spent some time in Kandy before Bennett decided to become a Theravada Buddhist monk, travelling to Burma to do so. Crowley then decided to tour India, devoting himself to the Hindu practice of Rāja yoga, by which means he believed he had achieved the spiritual state of dhyana. He spent much of this time studying at the Meenakshi Temple in Madura. At this time he also wrote poetry which was published as The Sword of Song (1904). He contracted malaria, and had to recuperate from the disease in Calcutta and Rangoon. In 1902, he was joined in India by Eckenstein and several other mountaineers: Guy Knowles, H. Pfannl, V. Wesseley, and Jules Jacot-Guillarmod. Together, the Eckenstein-Crowley expedition attempted K2, which had never been climbed before. On the journey, Crowley was afflicted with influenza, malaria, and snow blindness, and other expedition members were also struck with illness. They reached an altitude of 20,000 feet (6,100 m) before turning back.

Strange Angel unfortunately on Paramount is a great show about the founding of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and how Jack Parsons was heavily influenced by and sent money to Crowly and threw psychedelic sex parties and kind of started a cult.

Those guys were all such bad asses back then. Muir spent weeks in the back country with a ground roll, and some stale biscuits stuffed in the pockets of an oil coat. The Lewis and Clark team carried a boat over the Rockies and took down charging grizzly bears with single shot muskets only to finally reach the PNW for a winter where it rained nearly every day. Then they got to walk back east.
