Ah, Oakland (duck!)

Forums:

While it's a very nice venue and well-run, I've never been a big fan of the Fox Theater in Oakland as a venue, and less of a fan for it's location.

A number of years ago a very good friend of mine was shot after a show very near the venue during an attempted car-jacking (or straight murder attempt) and now this.

It's a daily thing in Oakland, and while that town is certainly not alone in the raging, horrible issues of these times, it is a lovely but oh-so-dangerous disaster waiting to happen.

Go to the show???

The addition of the Moxie hotel just down the streets helps for me. Nice bar in the lobby. I'll be staying there for a show at the Paramount next month. I have to agree that the neighborhood sucks but I don't know if it is that much worse than where the Warfield is. Had a gun pulled on me at the bar across the street from the Warfield because my wife told the guy not to steal the tips on the bar. Another patron showed his gun and the guy walked.

I can't read the story either. Stay safe, everybody and enjoy life as you can.

Da Boy recently relocated from Oakland to SF.

Downtown Oakland injury shooting cancels Fox Theater concert

A woman standing in a line with her two children was wounded by stray bullets

OAKLAND — A concertgoer waiting in line outside the Fox Theater with her two children  was struck Wednesday afternoon by stray bullets, leading to the concert’s cancellation, authorities said.

The woman, who lives in another state, was hit twice  about 2:30 p.m. in the 1900 block of Telegraph Avenue, authorities said. Her children were not injured, authorities said. She was in stable condition at a hospital.

Police said the woman was hit by stray bullets fired during a  gun battle between a vehicle burglary suspect and the owner of the vehicle that happened on the street. Some parked vehicles and at least one building were also hit by the gunfire but no other injuries were reported.

No arrests have been made.

In a social-media post, the Fox Theater acknowledged the cancellation of the concert by rock band All Time Low due to “unforeseen circumstances.”

“We are very sorry for any inconvenience this has caused,” the post said. “If you purchased tickets directly from Ticketmaster, you will be automatically refunded. Otherwise, refunds available at point of purchase.”

For information leading to the arrest of a suspect, police are offering up to $7,500 in the shooting. Anyone with information may call police at 510-238-3426 or Crime Stoppers of Oakland at 510-777-8572.

Kill people w guns

Slight apologies judit I know you're not Facebook

I started this thread because it involved someone standing in a concert line, and it resonated with me more because of what happened to my friend after a Buffalo Springfield concert at the Fox, but in all fairness to Oakland, I should emphasize again that this sort of shit is happening everywhere these days, most definitely including SF (Haight Street has become murder central lately).

Especially in the big cities crime is just completely out of control, with no easy answers.

And to those who think carrying a gun can protect and deter crime, sometimes it can, but this story is a good example of also what can and absolutely does go wrong far more often when a bunch of civilians start shooting it out.

Gun violence sucks. There was a terrible incident last Saturday on the freeway in Oakland too.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — A freeway shooting in Oakland killed a toddler who may have been hit by a stray bullet while sleeping in his car seat, authorities and friends of his family said.

A small group of us were leaving the Kaiser on the late side one year after a Dead show (Spring 1986?) and  just down the street from the venue, one guy who was with us fell over on his face like he had a heart attack. He could talk ok but he was in shock and he had broken his glasses in the fall and they cut his face and no one could figure out what happened. He said it felt like he got hit by a bolt of lightning. Everyone but his friends thought it was drug-related. Pre cell phone, we finally got him to a hospital.

Turns out at the hospital they found a bullet in the top of his skull. Didn't go thru.

Only thing we could surmise is that in all that crowd dispersed up the road, he walked under a bullet that someone fired up in the air from a distance.

He ended up ok.

That reminds me of 82 New Years run at the Kaiser. Me 17 year old from NH, hanging out with a bunch of people from Minnesota that I met that summer at shows. We came out of one the shows not New Years, and the guy I was with asked the cop how to get to Oakland China Town. We wanted to get some food. The cop gave us good walking directions and as we turned to leave he said you have a gun right? We decided to get on BART and go back to Berkeley where we were staying.

If Oakland was such a dangerous place wht did the band play there so many times??

We took BART back to our hotel near San Leandro after Furthur played in 2008/9 and the cops ended up murdering a guy on the platform about 30 seconds after our train pulled off.

His name was Oscar Grant.

Damn, I was hoping it had gotten a little better (gentrified lol)... I just got tix to see Nick Mason and also Steve Hackett there next year.  Probably park in a safer area and Uber there/back so thugz won't be tryin' to jack my ride.

When we left the Fox Theater after Billy Strings (September show) things seemed relatively tame. And then as a large group of us exiting the Theater were headed to the parking garage, a couple of thugz starting scoping out their targets. I  turned around and looked right at one of them coming up from behind and he bolted, only to circle back a minute later. Most of us were old timers and knew to stay vigilant but I'm betting someone was their victim. Just a whole different vibe than SF, IMO. Yeah, worse than the GAMH after hours only because it seems so sleepy in Oakland and then, bam there are the gangbangers out of nowwhere.

I'd still go back for Billy Strings though..I think.
