Aging, Workplace, and Generation Z

Forums:

I'm not into the generational hate that happens among groups of folk, especially in the workplace. I'm a young 43 year old. I look young, and most days, I feel young. I'm Gen X, so by instinct I avoid or try to mediate the workplace drama that happened between boomers and Millenials. I thought the cliches both used against each other were most often simply false.

The past couple of years were a real grind in my recent job. Due to Covid and other factors, we had too much work, and simply couldn't get people hired, and if we did, couldn't get them to stay. I trained new hires, and this past year I trained 3 people that were "generation Z".

Generation Z made me feel like a very old person. Generation Z also thought I was an old person. Generation Z in the workplace was an entirely different beast than the previous generations. I am now seeing in real time that the next job generational battle will be aging Gen Xrs and Gen Z recruits.

May God have mercy on us all

Managing my patients via zoom and telemedicine/ being able to work from home was a lifesaver for me

I started working remotely in March 2020. I am permanently remote at this point. I trained the folks I did remotely, and it worked. Being able to work from home was a lifesaver here also.

That being said: Even in the remote settings, the generational differences came forth.

IMO it's on how you manage your staff. I always involve everyone and try to brainstorm together on ideas. I then identify the ones I want to move up into key positions and groom them for where I want them to be in their next steps, and I talk to them to make sure they are on the same page in my plans. Some people don't want to move up at certain times and I am fine as long as they are good at what they do, usually needs arrive in their lives when they want more from work and in pay and advancement. i have never had a problem with the different generations. To be honest I have no idea on who is where in the generation identification and just look at them as partners in crime.

Fabes, I felt the same way as you until this last year. It's probably less about the generation and more about the individuals we hired, admittedly, so, I'm not saying I'm going to judge this generation carte blanch. I'm saying these kids made me feel old.

Anyway, after 8 years, I took a new position. I work for a west coast university now.

We have Baby Boomers to Gen Z and everything in between and with a strong corporate culture that everyone buys into then things are great . In my opinion its all about having the right people in the right seat who buy into the culture regardless of generation. It is much easier said than done but worth the effort for those running a business. We have over 80 employees from Sacramento to San Diego.

Wait until you cross the Six Oh.
