40 Years ago today

Forums:

40 years ago today I had the pleasure of sitting front row, not a soul in front of me, at Madison Square Garden to see The Grateful Dead.  A few months earlier I waited on line, not online, at the Felt Forum entrance of the Garden on 8th Avenue and was number 15 on line to purchase tickets.  For those that remember, in the good old days the tickets were pre-printed at the garden in the color of the seats (Blue, Green, Orange, Yellow and the brownish-purple of the orchestra) well they decided to not open one of the box office windows until number 14, I was 2nd at that window.  There was a 4 ticket limit total for both night, March 9th & 10th.  The person in front of me asked for the best 4 tickets for one night and got 4 2nd row seats.  I said to myself I am getting some really good seats.  Little did I know how good!  I asked for the best pair for each night and received the same pair of tickets in the front row directly in front of Jerry Garcia and not a soul in front of me.  As you can see the whole experience was memorable.  Of course I made sure every person I knew was brought down to the orchestra and big old party was had by all.  Ah, the days of waiting out for tickets!

Nice.  I got put in the front row at my first Shoreline show in '93, inbetween Phil and Bob, more or less right in front of Mickey.  I ate a bunch of mushrooms, and it must have showed, because Phil and Mickey kept giving me these goofy looks like they were cracking up.  Jerry was kind of a buzzkill though.  Whenever I'd make eye contact, he'd shake it off like he was angry and look back down at his guitar.

How did you spend your Senior Year Spring Break?

Pittsburgh, NYC, & Hartford.

The first of the best two back to back shows I had the pleasure of attending.

Nice I definitely remember the one time I pulled front row for 10/14/83 in Hartford. I lined up at a mall in Portsmouth NH and got front row for the first night and second row for second night. I couldn't bring anyone down though. Hartford Gestapo security even lectured me about allowing friends to use the seats for a few songs while I was in their seats. The only person I saw get away with standing in the aisle in Hartford was Bill Walton.

The Sushi Restaurant I worked for (Taiko in Rockville Centre) was hired to cater the shows and we got back stage passes. Turns out The Garden had a problem w the band bringing in food from outside the venue so we ended up only getting to see the show w our passes both nights and didn't have to work which was AWESOME. Two really really really good shows we were in the front row both nights . Wheel-China Doll on 3/10 was bliss .

Went to both.  My show count was still in single digits at the time.  Night two was very . . . electric. . . thanks to some very talented chemistry students at Columbia U; acquaintances of a pre-med friend of ours.  My first behind-stage seats; though we drifted around for Set II.

I remember some feedback from Jerry on 1/2Step that was kinda brutal, even behind stage.

That sounded to me more like from the PA as though someone kicked over s reverb unit. Billy was trying to motion to the band to stop......it was lou as fuck!

I thought Weir's equipment was screwed up, maybe why a stand alone MAMU(1st time in at least 4 years??) was wrapped around  Mississippi, Franklin's, & Roses.

Quote from Bobby:  "THAT LOUD NOISE IN THE BEGINNING OF THE FIRST SONG THAT WASN'T A MISTAKE ,,,THAT WAS ART!!!

Night two was very . . . electric. . . Early 80's Lazy Lite>Supp always a treat, right after a surprise mid-set Don't Ease.

There is also a Charlie Miller sound board that rivals the Glassman audience version.

Is there such a thing as a "reverb pan"?  Or "can", maybe?  I kinda remember someone shouting that over the music.  Either my buddy to my left or the freak to my right.
