I personally think it is very overrated. Was supposedly the longest Birdsong but I think it has ton;s of warts and I rarely listen to it. Much better shows like the next show in NYC with the epic China/Rider. But was anewbie and loved the scene inside and out. I remember people trying to give save El Salavdor arm bands outside. It was a college town. Or more correctly,College Park, Md!

JGB played there a year later at Richie Coliseum but missed it as was back out west then.

I saw the msg shows. I have strong memories of the 3.10.81 show.

Same here two absolutely stunning shows back to back. That Scarlet>Fire from 3/10/81 is by far my favorite.

That tour is a great example of where the boys were in the early 80's, first 3 stops were at theaters, then go big with the arenas, MSG, Boston Garden, Hartford Civic.

I missed Cole Field House did the Stanley, then 3/9 & 10.

>>>>epic China/Rider>>>>

The 10th gets the most attention, 3/9 is just as good.

One UJ Band on the tour(only 4 in '81), friends said it was teased after Saint at Cole.  3/9 & 3/6 are very similar 2nd sets, Samson, Estimated, Other 1 & Stella.  Energy level isn't even close, Stanley was very mellow, MSG smoked.

Some of the greatest upsets in NCAA Tournament history occurred at Cole Field House. The NCAA Tournament Final Four was first hosted at the facility in 1966 and featured the Duke Blue Devils, Kentucky Wildcats, Texas Western, and Utah Utes. Texas Western (which started all black players) upset Kentucky's all-white team 72–65. Cole was also the site of the first-ever upset of an NCAA Tournament No. 2-seed at the hands of a No. 15-seed, as Richmond defeated heavily favored Syracuse, 73-69. Cole Field House is the site of the most upsets of No. 1-ranked men's basketball teams.

I was at the 1986 Greek Theatre show on the night University of Maryland star and  #1 draft pick of the Boston Celtics Len Bias OD'd on coke.  A very ragged Jerry Garcia croaked "this one's for Len Bias" as they launched into "He's Gone".  I watched Lenny play lots of games on tv at Cole Field House, but never went there.  Maybe the Dead playing their longest ever Birdsong there was somehow precocious, as Bias was supposed to take Larry Bird's role as leader of the Celtics.

^ Dave, I had season tickets at THE Ohio State University in 1986.

We were seated in the front row on the baseline between the basket and the OSU bench.

At one point Len Bias inbounded the ball right in front of me. I could have reached out to touch him.

It was a tragic end for an athlete with a promising future. sad

I will have to listen to that Greek show for Jerry's mention.

<<It was a tragic end for an athlete with a promising future

could have quite possibly been Jordan's biggest rival

Went to the 3/9/81 MSG show with a high-school pal,  Sister & her boyfriend. We brought in a "Bong", not a large glass one, just your typical acrylic one-footer.  Back then they really didn't search anyone much.

Seats were 9th - row Center, probably the best I've ever had at the Garden.

Phil say's "This one's for Les Bias" not Len.

Yup, that is Phil not Jerry.

Just watched it, he says Len.

A little historical factoid about Cole Field House

On April 28, 1973, Chuck Berry played at Cole Field House. The show was particularly notable because Berry (who did not employ a full time band) was backed by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band
