Might have been the only first set Crazy Fingers that I can remember seeing..

I've never been there, but it always looks like it would suck to be on the lawn, peering through a very narrow space to see the stage. It seems that it would be like looking through the wrong end of binoculars from outside the venue.

And wasn't the balcony added later? Was there a more open view from the lawn before they added the balcony?

Otherwise, if you're in the seated areas it looks like a cool place to see a show.

Absolutely fantastic venue! Have seem many shows there!  The grounds inside and outside the venue are gorgeous.... grassy fields, big old trees, interesting buildings, etc.  As for viewing the show... while the lawn can be a blast, it is a horrible place the "see" a show. they have large monitors but you can barely see the stage and you feel a bit removed from the show while on the lawn.  Inside the venue is fantastic if you're in the front 2 sections of the balcony or in the front lower sections. Sounds is usually really bad in the upper/back sections of balcony.... although I must say, while at Phish there last summer, we spent a first set in the very last row of the balcony and while the sound did suck, we had an incredibly fun and very memorable set gigging down super hard, laughing out loud and checking out the crowd on the lawn!  Also, I've spent several sets over the years on those ramps going from the lawn up to the balcony (you can see them in the picture) spinning and gigging with a friend or two. Security doesn't care, sound is fantastic from speakers facing directly down the ramps!! Super fun on the ramps if you're in that gig mode... interaction with the lawn crowd, endless space cuz, at most, there might be a couple other people on the ramps.  SPAC is famous in the GD world for good reason!!

It did suck being on the lawn. KInd of like not making it into the show but still decent sound. If you jumped in the air you could get a glimps of the band. Also in the pouring rain, followed by a six hour drive home and then going to my job jack hammering for the gas company followed by three days in the hospital with a nice throat abscess. But yeah went back again. The place was beautiful .

Then there was a mere 32 years ago right now!

Touch-heads crashed it and TRASHED the lot in '88.

By-bye GD.

My first time there was in 88. They must have sold 40,000 tickets. We were under a speaker set up on the lawn, and I literally had no idea where the pavilion was. I couldn't see it from where we were. The band could have been in Montreal. Great show, though.

SPAC was a wonderful stop on an absolutely ripping, fantastic summer tour. The boys were energized, writing new music, Jerry was feeling great and the band was on fire!!

Still have my entire ticket from the '85 show, once the gates opened, the ticket takers just disappeared.   Speakers on the balcony wall facing the lawn and getting in early enough to scope a good sight angle worked fine for me.
