33 years ago today

I was working in a long, narrow building out on the Avenues in SF that had a plate glass storefront window.  As the floor rolled, I remember looking out that window and seeing the houses across the street tilt one way as we tilted the other -- sorta like a big tv screen with diagonal alignment problems.

Fuck staying inside under a doorway or something -- your immediate instinct was to get outside under the sky only. Everyone working ran out into the backyard up unto a giant treestump (it intuitively seemed like the most rooted, stable thing around) like a bunch of Keystone cops (bump, bump, bump, bump,...).

We left work and got in a car and drove past our houses to check out the situation (I was in the Richmond District) - and followed the smoke down to the Marina. Disaster sightseeing. Most traffic lights were out. Power lines down all over. Since a lot of the houses touch each other in SF, the corner houses showed the most damage from the whole block flexing. Luckily, we only experienced minor breakage.

Mother Nature is a bitch

The Giants were robbed...

10 day delay saw Stewart/Moore back in the rotation for game 3&4

Maybe give some info instead of forcing a youtube link

Just saying

IDK Judit, 10/17/89 was a pretty important date most of us remember, and not (necessarily) because of baseball.  Where were you that fateful day?

Here's another YT link:  https://youtu.be/IqcZX4_5e5M

The first was 3 days before but this is the best one (of 2).

Rumors of an earthquake benefit in December never materialized, as far as I can recall...

Maybe.

Then again, maybe not.

A little mystery in a thread can be a good thing.

But OK, it was a big earthquake in San Francisco.

I was in a huge parking lot at Candlestick Park, sitting with a friend in the back of my pickup truck finishing off a final beer before going into the game. I thought someone was shaking my truck, but when I looked out at the lot I saw all the cars swimming up & down like boats in water. It was a trip.

There's no question about it. Stewart & Moore were both dominating that year, but the other two A's starters weren't even close. The A's would have won the series anyway, but the Giants might have won a game or two.

Poop.

Some friends and I had taken Lily to a Portuguese place in Newark's Ironbound District (it's still there!) for her birthday, which was the following day.

I was heading back to the dining room with my eye on the game as I passed through the bar when the shaking started.  But, ya know, paella.

I remember it from here in Eugene; I think my son was at Candlestick with his mom and the rest of my family was in Berkeley and Marin. As I recall, life in the Bay Area stood still while being in a chaotic panic.

It was Jill luvs Phil who wanted the thread to start differently, Jackohearts.

I was in Santa Cruz not watching the game and thought we were being nuked for a few seconds there.

I was at this show and knew nothing until after the show. I thought the band wanted to watch the game.  Seriously

I was in my second year at University of Minnesota living in the dorms. Dude directly across the hall from me, Jake was from Oakland.

Obviously panicked and couldn't get through on the phone to anyone there. I think things turned out ok for him regardless.
