Hey, Bob. I was just talking about you the other day with a mutual acquaintance of ours from LHHS, Bob Riley.

this one is solid.

Great night for us on couch tour, PLF, then The DNB from Alaska. Cold beer Corned Beef dinner. Yeah life is just fine today.

The freakflagflyer stream is solid here and the band does seem a bit off again.

Thanks, Jambone, but I'm kind of enjoying the befuddlement for a change.

Wow!  I haven't heard that name in a while!  What a trip.

Last night I ran into a guy I traded tapes with in 1981...hadn't seen him in 36 years!

Rob Riley....what's he up to these days?  I do remember him.  I think we were in MIddle school together too,

but not sure.  I think I'll get off wifi and plug in.  sometimes that helps...

The drummer slows this band down and Jordan's guitar sounds like it's being played through a tin can.

I got the freak flyer on mixlr...sounds good...(stream does etc)

SJ has that Disco Biscuits tone

Crosby has been solid this run.

SJ really seemed really be into what Jason was doing on that Watchtower.

A sweetly played few songs here. I think things will go deep from here on out

Happy Midnight Hour everyone!

The ppl there SURE enjoyed that set.....nice response phreaks!

Of the 3 shows I watched, tonight was my favorite

Laid back, lovely and cohesive for long stretches. I am almost, almost there with Stanley Jordan. John K got rough and fiery a few times, seemed into it. Joan still sexiest woman in hippy rock. Phil was Phil.

Wasn't really feeling it all last night. Always a pleasure to see Phil but overall, meh. Ended up leaving early.

Peeps were diggin it though so prolly just me.

Re. the whole run:

Phil - was GREAT! as usual. - nice and loud in the stream. - even played a couple of "solos".

Jason - also great - excellent solos and solid comping the rest of the time. Looked like he was having fun trading licks w/ Stanley.

Stanley - best I've seem him w/ Phil. - seemed to know the tunes better this time around.. Yes, his tone is a tad thin, but it didn't bother me.

JK - his singing was barely adequate - his playing was quite good about half the time - the other half, not so much.

Mark - very restrained most of the time. A little more active than Koford, but not a lot. Loosened up on a few tunes, esp. last night, and wasn't too bad during those times..

Joan - has apparently "lost" her voice - she was flat and didn't have much range.

signal-2017-03-18-043454.jpg^ best review yet i couldnt agree more. I was on stage left side for first 2 nights and JK was crazy loud and last night i was on Jordans side and i could finally hear him. The sound at the Cap this run sucked imo. ^^^^^Stanley Jordan ended up at my friends hotel room lastnight playing guitar and singing till 5am the guy is a sweetheart and a fantastic player^^^^

Long time for me since I last saw Phil and was   hoping for the best show of the run,,,at the very least I  got the best second set in a long time.

The band  came on very late at 8:30 PM

Cold Rain was allitle subdue as Stanley was  giving most of the soloing by  John and he was somewhat tentative.Alamaba Getaway rocked out and SJ really amped thos one by getting more raunchy in his tone, which was only the begining of more to come. To these ears when he threw it back to JK , John attacked his solo but he was in the  wrong  key and it was not till the end of his solo, which was also very raunchy, did he  right the ship.

Next Time You See Me was perfect with Joan adding that assertive knowing of a woman having been previously scorned.

Viola Lee was a  early set surprise and the entire band  rose up to the occasion, this one vocally was very strong and both JK and SJ soared on it, Jason Crosby  also started throwing gas on the fire as well. The ending was quite unique with  Phil bringing the  jam to an almost a silent close except for an  extending bass playing segment, almost a  bass solo, before  leading the  band back into the final chorus.

Candyman was text book  perfect with JK hitting all the right  notes.

He's Gone was another pleasant surprise and except for  one minor vocal miscue by JK this was a  perfect sing along. The  jam was really  good with the band completely in the  groove.

Casey Jones was a very strong finish.

Set II...where can I begin?

Dear Mr, Fantasy was excellent and  very  high energy. JK threw everything he  had into it and even SJ was impressed. The  jam out of it was excellent with Phil really playing some very cool  stuff and leading the jam into more textural landscapes rather than meltdown steal your face implosions. The transition into St, Stephen was also quite  good and they knocked this one out of the park and once again the jam before the  finally chorus was excellent with everyone contributing something quite enjoyable to listen to.

I knew Unbroken Chain was due and we got a majestic doozy. The band really went out there and it was nice how they really owned this version. It was one of the best I have seen in quite awhile with the ending being stunningly beautiful. Phil was clearly pleased. This went into a  scorching Watchtower. It was  powerful and  sadly  too timely with  you  know hoo occupying the  White House. This version  had another  cool jam in it  before coming to a complete stop.

Joan  came  back out and the band broke into Morning Dew...Wow!

Joan really was the true singer on this one, she  added a  depth of sadness that was  as observant as it was righteous, Then  you had the  band  backing her  up. JK really  was at the  top of his  game and during the  bridge he gladly tossed it off to Jason who had a very tasteful solo on the Leslie before handing it over to SJ who  was totally  into it.

When it came to the  final verses Joan was stunning and the  band  just exploded, SJ was  jumping up and  down and JK was simply raging and they  blew the old roof off the Cap tonight.

One of the best Dews I have seen since Further broke it out at Cornell.

Then  you are like what could  happen  next?

SJ leads  Phil, Jason and John into a instrumental jam that pulls Little Wing out of  thin air. Stanley completely inhabited this song, along with  channeling alittle  Jimmy, and he was introspective and nuanced and then just as  quickly became explosive. Phil was completely  enamored and his playing reflected that.Stanley leaped the  the front of the stage soaring on every note, SJ even  honored St. Patrick  by throwing in a Irish  jig at the end of the instrumental piece that had  him practically  Irishstep dancing he was  so pumped up for it.

Perfect!

Next we  got a wonderfully performed Wheel that featured  great  harmonies and most excellent crowd participation. Joan and John both  sand  verses to Midnight hour which had the place rocking and Phil dropped two distinctive Phil Bombs at the  very end he was so please at what had  unfolded.

After a heartfelt donor rap we went back to the State of the Union with a rip roaring US Blues to close out this epic second set.

Finally after band introductions by Phil Lesh, Stanley got the  biggest cheers, it was photograph  time with a seven foot ladder set up behind the  drum  kit with the  band  posing with all us Phreaks photo bombing them.

Great to  run into Lynn and  Bob as well.

Happy Trails!

I believe during the jam in St. Stephen.

Great review Stella....

Stanley Fucking Jordan!  Wow!  Totally blew me away.  Just a great night of sublime music and Phil joy!

So very happy I caught this show....just what these ears needed.  :)

Thank you to the Maestro Phil!  77 years old and still tapping into the wonders of the music in a way that only Phil can do.

The Unbroken was indeed a majestic beauty and the Dew jaw dropingly gorgeous.

My zoner tribe was the best one can ask to be a part of.  Truly a kinship of phreakery and I love you all.

heartI agree, Stanley Jordan is an amazingly sweet person and immensely talented

Glad you enjoyed the run!!!

Stella didn't hold the Zoner's Back- Safe travels home

Neil- hope that helped your heart

Stanley Jordan shoots psychedelic raindrops from his guitar.  I saw it happen.

Stella pretty much summed it up. Just a great night, especially the second set.  Had dead center seats second row loge on the aisle, perfect view and sound.  JK seemed more animated last night than I have ever seen him, aggressive and on it.  Crosby and Stanley had magical interaction all night long.  There were a few slip ups (notably a rhythmic problem in He's Gone and a hiccup in The Wheel) but they were fixed quickly and never took the band off track.  SJ was really up in the mix which helped a lot due to his thinner tone.  First set contained Viola that had some really interesting spaces and showed what was to come, a fantastic Bird Song like jam out of He's Gone, the best Fantasy I ever heard, a Stephen that went so far out on the jam that I think they forgot what they were playing, a perfect Unbroken Chain (with amazing lights), and Midnight Hour at precisely midnight.  I thought Joan should have sung Watchtower but that's a minor quibble.  Lots of over the top jams in the second set where you could just forget about what song they were playing.   I took a friend who started seeing shows in the early 70's but hadn't been to a show since '83.  He was blown away, couldn't believe how the music and the magic were still happening and still evolving.  I was even able to get the poster from the 16th (which was the one I wanted) because they didn't arrive in time for that show so they were selling them last night instead.  Just exactly perfect.

Here is an audience link to verify if  we  had on rosey cover glasses last night. Listening to Stanely's solo on Dear Mr. Fantasy with him Jason doing what Thom2 perfectly described.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHUvlkgoRgU

 >>>>>a Stephen that went so far out on the jam that I think they forgot what they were playing

I love when that happens (or even when it is only I that has forgotten).

I know that I forgot what they were playing, and the reentry seemed a little rushed and rough (I have to listen to it again) so I thought at the time that they had as well.  "Opps, where were we?  Right, St. Stephen!"

Just got home, exhausted now. After listening to part of the first night i honestly thought Joan and Phil both had that cruddy east coast sinus infection and i wasn't expecting much vocally out of either friday, NOT the case at all friday. Joan sounded great and so did Phil. Morning Dew was no doubt the highlight for me, Joan was well prepared and hit on everything perfectly, very moving with proper justice done. Love me some Joan.

You could tell the songs Stanley knew and it showed, he was watching John and picked up things well i thought for someone obviously not all that familiar with the material, the spots he did find were all well done. Very impressed with Stanley Jordan and he will only continue to get stronger with more reps. Pleasantly surprised all in all very talented dude with a flair for fashion.

Crosby was excellent, believe it was his He's Gone solo that really shined. I could be wrong on the song though.

The drummer i thought was fine.

JK was just sorta there up to about Candyman, Candyman was good but his vocals were apprehensive to start each verse. Perhaps it was the loud ovation he got after Candyman that woke the dude up but sometime soon after that he got serious and started jumpin around like a grasshopper and rippin perfect timely loud leads. I was happy to see him come to life and show what he can really do.

Can't believe Phil is 77, our fearless leader is all i can say.

Good solid show that exceeded my expectations especially the JK part.

For those of you thinking about making a trip to the Cap, do it. Nice acoustics and not a bad seat in the house. All i can speak for is friday but to all the folks that kept away from this one because of the lineup sure missed a solid show. Still sorta shocked at how good it actually was.

Ran in to quite a few friendly zoner faces and had the pleasure of meeting a few new ones.  ((( FAMILY))) nothing better than family.

^^the folks that kept away from this one because of the lineup sure missed a solid show

I was able to catch the posted stream and to be totally honest, after seeing Phil with many great players over the years, this lineup left me with disappointment and a sad taste of nostalgia.

Thom, next show i hope to run into you. Next one i'm considering loge on your recommendation. One of friends from VA was sitting in that area of the loge, dead center.

halloween? maybe may.

Good show for this band and glad some of you got your Phil. Like Halloween 2015 even though the last show of that run got great reviews I was simply not a Phan of that band, JK  and more  so of SJ. I feel the same way this run. No regrets from my side.

It was a wonderful run, got to see so many folks I haven't seen in a while and was super sweet to meet Fog for first time :) Always a great vibe especially when the staff and ushers know you by name and say " oh, we were hoping to see you again" !!  I adore the staff @ The Cap, they are great to me. I gave out a ton of hairpins, pins and headbands ....it was awesome to see everyone wearing them during show. Even Joan wore one of the ones I gave her onstage , made me smile ...

This photo was taken by a great guy named Doug whom was on the rail :)

I heard from a couple of folks there may be a Memorial Day run....we shall see ;). Gonna read the reviews above...but for now I need to regroup and recharge ((( Basking in the afterglow ))).

eastcoastneil....that is awesome, I would love to meet him someday :) The band stayed at our hotel, but were kept well tucked away ;)

Ted, it was SO cool to see you again, been way to long...loved your review !

Also was great to see Caryn(Scarlet)...you look wonderful, glad we had a few moments to chat last nite.

^^Having said that This show was by far the best of the bunch.  Some good stuff.

I enjoyed this run, a whole bunch.

I rarely meet & greet zoner's. Nobodies fault but mine.

I did get 2 hang with friends old & new.

So fun.

Memorial Day weekend we will do it all over again...

Make sure I have this right....

A bunch of people who weren't a the show are telling us how low the bar has come.

Right.

Thom! Stop with the fake news now. Sad.

I'm gonna go way against the grain here & say that this was simply Not My Kind of Show.  First let me say that I LOVE SJ, like Joan & JK, & LOVED Phil's B-Day show & thought Thurs was "decent/good but not great", & I thought SJ was far more practiced & knew the material better than in fall '15 (altho there was far less psychedelic jamming overall & NONE on Fri).

First 3 songs felt pretty much like Filler I really could care less about ever seeing again, altho Competently played/sung.  Viola Lee had a nice psychedelic teaser jam but then just ended abruptly w/no fanfare (Bucky would have Booed).  This was setting the Mood for the Evening.  Candyman followed by He's Gone?  Well just shoot me up w/Morphine then Demerol.  Again, well sung/played but snoozefesty.  Jam after He's Gone felt like getting the start of a Happy Ending then getting Cockblocked/Blue Balled by Casey Jones.  Oh Yeah, it's St Patty's Day, Reknown for Bad Rockin' Sing Along Houseparty Shows (Exhibit A:  Spectrum 3/17/92, almost vowed to never see another GD show after that Disaster).

2nd set started well enough w/Dear Mr Fantasy, another one I never want to ever see again but this version was well sung/played, a little bit of jamming/space into St Stephen, which was competent enough but not really that "far out" in the jam (for REAL jammy versions see 5/27/16 w/Medeski, also July 2013 Cap w/Medeski).  Then again, show comes to a screeching HALT, a Competent Unbroken but nothing special or really far out;  they stop AGAIN, NOW the show really hits the SHITTER.  WORST Watchtower I've EVER SEEN, JK should NOT be singing this one, total Ham & Egger, NO jamming except for Crosby hammering on the keys for like 5 min's while everyone else watches (I can go see the students from the Hartt School of Music do this every Monday night for free @ Black Eyed Sally's in Hartford).  The Watchtower simply Stopped in the middle with no sense of ending or continuity, then when they started Morning Dew, I was simply DONE & wanted to be On the Road back home Eating Pizza & Drinking Beer.  Little Wing was decent but too little too late, & the rest of the show was a complete Clusterfuck of a Trainwreck (JK singing Midnight Hour?  REALLY?!?!?!!?) & I was never so in the mood for Pizza & Beer in my Life.

Yes Yes I know I LOVE Phil & am Glad to be seeing him on a Regular basis at Age 77 but for $113.50 I have every RIGHT to BITCH UP A STORM if I didn't like it (hell even the 1st night of Coney Is. in Sept. was better & I only paid $25 for that).  And I seem to be in the Minority on this one.  Lyn & Bob from CT liked it too.  I will say, lots of folks Bitched about last May's shows w/Medeski & Melvin Seals, I woulda gladly taken any of those 3 shows WAYYYYYY over this show ANY FUCKIN' DAY.  To Phil's credit, last time I left a Phil show this Disappointed was the night Stu Allen sang I Dig A Pony, I think Nov '14 (Joan was there then too).  Also will say I liked this drummer better than the guy they had this past Oct, even tho I liked that run of shows much better.

Then I look @ the JRAD setlists & picture them "singing" all those songs & am STILL Glad I paid $113.50 to see Phil . . .

^^Make sure I have this right....

A bunch of people who weren't a the show are telling us how low the bar has come.

Right.

I'll watch streams of JRAD and be totally blown away by the interplay and musicianship. The recent shows left a lot to be desired with no real cohesion and a general lack of direction in the jams. Phil and Crosby were great as usual, but the rest of the talent on stage fell short. Stanley is a great guitarist in his own right, but I personally feel he doesn't offer much to this music.

If only JRAD could sing; They're not even @ a Coked Up 1984 Max Creek level . . .

Or maybe they could just NOT sing & do all instrumental.  Jazz Is Dead did it.  But they didn't Sell Out Venues . . .

lol, thom shut the fuck up, you racist piece of shit.

That's all you got?  Punk.

Loser.

I know I am but what are you?

loser?

yeah, i am not the racist that procreated. you support white nationalism, you support everything trump has done even though you say you didn't vote for him. how do you explain your support for steve bannon, steven miller, michael anton (to name a few)?

talk about a loser, you have no spine, you fucking coward. how does your daughter feel about her father supporting the defunding of planned parenthood?

you're all over the place dude.

sorry excuse for a grown ass man you are.

I think Phil is losing me.

Pretty sure I'd drive much further for JRAD than for Phil at this point.

I really want to like what he's doing, but it just isn't viscerally moving me like it used to.

I'm fully open to the fact that its partially me, too. Different places in life, different motivations and all.......but the thing is, the catalog still moves me and JRAD can more consistently get me "there" with much less effort.

With Phil, it seem for me to be more of a mental excercise these days to convince myself I'm enjoying it, because hey, it's Phil, right?  I'm always open to a good show from him and will always pull for his weird but the magic is a little fewer and further between  these days, it seems.

Good to meet you also Lyn and what a cool story about Joan and the pin, very cool. A pleasure to finally meet Sideshow also.

Pretty sure every single run has conflicting reviews and opinions, sometimes its more likes than dislikes but it never changes, nobody ever totally agrees on anything here.

Except when it's great and the x-factor is really present, it's undeniable and pretty much everyone that likes this thing recognizes it, as evidenced in the epic runs of 2001 and later outliers such as the Warfield Tarot run in 2004(?).  I'm not saying that's the sum total of those shows, but when they happen, there really isn't much disagreement.

It's been a while since one of ::those:: and it's hard for me to rationalize gambling on an outfit that doesn't deliver the type of show I crave with any consistency any more.

Picking ones battles had always been the crux of Phil's friends, now more so than ever, in my opinion.

When's the next Telstar?

I'd tend to agree w/73 . . . except that he likes Phish . . . talk about Ewwwww . . .

There has always been people coming in complaining about shows, every year most every show. Its what people do here now and what has always been done.

I agree with Sideshow on the show ranking, 3/15 best, 3/16 next, 3/17 last. I thought 3/17 was adequate and had a few high points but could have been much better. It almost seemed like they didn't rehearse as much for 3/17. They definately were not as good on 3/17; ragged ending of songs and jams and then stopping after every song showed that. 3/16 had too many stops after songs too.

Everyone has different expectations but I figure in a 3 show run there will be one lower quality show, which was 3/17. I've seen worse Phil shows too, but many better.

I had a great time at all 3 shows though. And thanks to a fellow zoner Mark for hooking me up with a ticket for 3/17!

I loved the Sounds of Silence/Eleanor Rigby; the highlight of the run for me.

Phil seemed so happy on 3/15, he played with a lot of emotion and passion. He gave a heartfelt speech when Shappy brought out the cake and the birthday sing along.

Wishing Phil continued good health and more Cap runs in our future!!!

Here's the last time I left a Phil show vastly disappointed w/pretty much the entire show.  Don't think I ever went back & listened to this.  Same kind of deal as 3/17/17 tho - a bunch of song/stop/song/stop w/o any real coherence.  Funny thing is, a lot of the same songs:

I'm surprised there were no guests for this birthday run. I could be mistaken, but was it advertised anywhere that there would be special guests for this run?

Jorma always seems to fill the stage at his annual Beacon birthday run. Phil should call him and ask how it's done...

Ro!!! You were missed!!!

was great seeing you too, Lyn! Even if for just a short moment.. thanks, I was so happy to be there! You look awesome~

I had a blast ~ was like coming "home" heart

Hey Pyramid.  You know me so well, can you come over and give me lessons about who I really am?

You really are the personification of leftist hate.  Wear it proudly.

sideshow  that anders phil run was fire, idk what u r talking abou.t  3/17/17 was def what u said, i agree with u on that. FWIW in the Beginning of the pHil runs at the cap the shows were solid line ups and just a blast   they have gone from 6 nights to three to two now. Larry Teresea Anders Stanley Nels Cline Melvin CRB w phil always seem to produce, especially The Q. IM happy to still see him even when its lack luster, i puff and take it all in and anticipating the downfall...sooner than later i think.

I wondered what those were.
