Been watching it on USA channel.

The story NBC aired last night during their Olympic coverage about chinese human rights atrocities in that country especially Tibet + Hong Kong, as well as their incursions in the south china sea and intimidation campaign against Taiwan, was enough to make a person of conscience boycott watching.  How TF does a pos  country that suppresses so many rights get to host an Olympics ?

They are just a private organization run by a bunch of corrupt people and China has the most money to throw around. It sucks that the athletes have to be tied to that POS organization, but they don't have a choice.

NOPE - having actually worked on the Olympics and witnessing the waste, deceptive practices and the IOCs lies manifested i have never watched another olympics since '96. The city of Atlanta was sold a bill of goods and got next to nothing  in return other than Centennial Park which they could have done themselves

Large contingent on this USA team with Salt Lake connections. Like Nathan Chen. And SLC is thinking about another bid. 2030 or 2034. Lots of folks here reliving the 20 year anniversary of 2002.

I had a good time. Sat in THE FRONT ROW at the Opening Ceremonies and booed George Bush loud enough and close enough for him to hear it. Pissed off a couple of folks around me. But it was so cool to see the athletes faces as they exited the tunnel and saw the crowd in the stadium, lifetime dreams realized for some. 

It was probably the first major world spectacle post-September 11th and it came off without a hitch. I sold pins and had a good time with the people. Got a great pin collection out of the deal and made a few bucks. You could even openly drink beer on the streets of SLC (some). This town was really alive.   

I haven't watched the Olympics since the '70s

We could use the 'Miracle ' again.

"Athletes" racing sled-like object in events hosted by an internationally corrupt organization, in land riddled with human rights violations.

I mostly enjoyed The Olympics in SLC by repeatedly frequenting German House for brats & liters (litres?) of BEER and the oddly empty local ski areas for lotta fresh, untouched powder. I did also fall into tix for the awards ceremony - US Gold and Macy Gray live in concert - but that was a very cold night in downtown SLC.

I feel for the athletes but China sucks in so many ways and the IOC seems corrupt beyond repair.

Not quite as scenic as Utah's mountains. And not a bit of natural snow in site.

At least she didn't make up some lame-ass shit about "the twistys" like the Summer Olympics diva did.

The pressure these folks are under is insane. Nathan Chen just set a record score but if he falls just once next time, he may be screwed. Ridiculous. 

I noticed on the left side course on the downhill skiing, quite a few folks fell at the same gate toward the bottom. I was thinking someone fell and screwed up that area and others paid the price. All that work and training for what? Poor course maintenance or just a bad spot?

Salt Lake just relit their cauldron tonight for a few days. The Gov thinks we'll get the games again. People seem to be in support.

Neither of those women needed to prove anything this time around. They've both already proven their greatness under the greatest pressure, already winning everything there is to win, but it's not easy out there. I think it's far more difficult than any of us mere mortals can understand.

But sports fans don't care about that. We're only interested in RESULTS!!!

I'm certain we'll be hearing the classic bogus fan concept "CHOKE" about Shiffrin now.

Despite everything she's already accomplished.

It would be fucking laughable if it wasn't so sad.

Nothing reveals the nature of the human condition like sports. It reveals so much of our best ways, and SO MUCH of our many, many worst ways.

Which is why, despite all the good and not so good reasons to not watch these games, I'm watching. Sure, the Olympics are as dirty as it gets, the depths of human greed & slime are on full display.

But so are the greatest things about our flawed human character.

These athletes don't care about the politics and the greed and the lying and all the bullshit. They're committed to their craft and have sacrificed so much to get there, every one giving it all they have.

Even when it's all covered in shit, or failure, that is still and always will be a beautiful thing.

And most of them don't end up with the $100 million guaranteed contracts that most pro athletes get.

It's not easy out there.

^ Horrible course conditions on the top of that hill, looked like ice, no grooming whatsoever, I saw numerous countries skiers miss poles and were out. It was amazing that anyone could ski that shit.

Why are a lot of the people on the Chinese men's hockey team not Chinese?

Nice to see Chen get a gold medal. He's worked for a long time and seems to have his head on straight. SLC is ecstatic the home town boy came through.  

The Olympics are just as corrupt as FIFA.

The figure skating today was a disaster. Sad for Kamila, and the athletes dealing with the stupidity of the IOC and the Russian coaches. She'll be dealing with this for a while. She's only 15. 

I'm thinking in the future when you look up shit show in the dictionary, that video will pop up. Heartbreaking for the other athletes, especially the ROC team. 

Mikaela had a good attitude about her situation. I feel she showed grace. She's still someone to look up to for youngsters.

Following the combined race, Shiffrin was still able to find perspective and provide introspection about her Olympic experience, as she has done throughout her time in Beijing.

"I think there's a lot of positive, and a lot of positive even in my skiing," Shiffrin said on the broadcast. "I had some really great -- some of the best skiing I've ever done here in Beijing, in the training, in the downhill over the last week, in my slalom, even today. In the race, in the moment, when it counts, then I didn't make it to the finish, and that's never happened in my entire career, so I don't understand it. But there was so much positive that's happened in the last couple weeks despite how much it really stinks.

"I don't know, sometimes you just have to take it, I guess. Try to fix it the next time. I don't know what I'm supposed to fix. That's the frustrating thing. I don't think there's something to fix. It just went really, really wrong."

It is sad for Kamila. She's only 15, and I highly doubt that she knew that she was being drugged. On the upside, she has at least 3 more Olympics to look forward to.
