19 years ago today - David Cone perfect game

Forums:

Simply one of the most amazing performances ever in baseball. I was given 2 tickets for this game and almost didn't go. There was something about the way the ball hit the catcher's mitt during that game that just reverberated in the stadium. With today's pitch counts, I'm pretty sure I, and probably everyone else, will never see another perfect game pitched.

Amazingly, I was also gifted tickets for David Wells perfect game the year before, so I really can't complain about probably never seeing another perfect game. I was also the recipient of tickets when Jim Abbott pitched his no-no at Yankee Stadium. I paid for my own tickets when Dwight Gooden did it. All in all, I'd say I've been blessed by the baseball gods.

Wow three no hitters including one by a guy with no hand!

But you missed the David Wells perfect-game that he threw hung-over! https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Wells%27_perfect_game

Apparently he was out drinking with Jimmy Fallon until 5:30am before his 1pm start.

What a guy.

Bucky G. ~ re read my above post. I was at Well's perfect game and the count was 4 no hitters including Dwight Gooden's. As I said, I've been blessed by the baseball gods.

Oh shit my reading skills suck somehow I read that as you were gifted tix but didn’t go. That’s pretty amazing.

Where the hell were you for Dave Righetti’s July 4th no-no??????? ;)

Interesting side story about Jim Abbot's no-hitter. As I said, I was gifted those tickets by the VP of a NJ Sanitation Co. (no, not Tony Soprano's Co.) that were the best seats I've ever had for a ballgame. 2nd row one section in towards home plate from the visitor's dugout. I took a friend to see his 1st ballgame sober so he had some support when faced with the beer vendors. Around the 7h inning he asked if I was ready to leave. I looked at him like he had 2 heads. I told him no, I'm not leaving. He asked why? As everyone knows, except him, one never mentions it when a pitcher has a no hitter going. I told him to figure it out. He couldn't. He asked why again. Some of the people around us overheard this and basically told him to shut the fuck up and watch the game. He realized the why in the top of the 9th and apologized. lol

Springsteen and Sanitation, you’re about as Jersey as they come. I bet you like that salty pork roll stuff too.

While pitch counts are lower, I'm pretty confident another perfect game will be pitched at some point. There have been two no hitters this year. With the shifts and high strike outs, it's still very possible.

Yeah it’s become a real home-run/strikeout league with some “blaming” the defensive shifts you mentioned.

The real crazy part of this day:    The Yankee On July 18, 1999, Berra was honored with "Yogi Berra Day" at Yankee Stadium. Don Larsen threw the ceremonial first pitch to Berra to honor the perfect game of the 1956 World Series. The celebration marked the return of Berra to the stadium, after the end of his 14-year feud with Yankees owner George Steinbrenner. On that day, Yankees pitcher David Cone threw a perfect game against the Montreal Expos,[59] only the 16th time it had ever been done in Major League history.

The image of Don Larsen in the teams' box at the end was one of disbelief.  Truly Yankee magic at work that day........

more strikeouts is causing pitchers to throw to many pitches and forcing them out of the game for pitch counts unless a no-no is going. We will see more combined no hitters.

Just missed Curt Shilling's almost no-no in Oakland with a 2 out hit in ninth inning. Fucking Shannon Stuart!

Seen Roger Clemons vs Nolan Ryan at Fenway...it was beyond special!

PS - Yankees Suck (I just hate the shirt but enjoy watching the Judge kid play ball)

Abbot's no hitter question for you...

When it happened did you stand up and give him a hand?

Handicap jokes maybe I should run for president.

>> Handicap jokes maybe I should run for president.

You might have TDS if you can't talk about 25 year old baseball games without bringing up Trump.

Seaver wins his 300th in Yankee Stadium b/c Cashen didn't protect him and The White Sox claimed him off waivers, Cone a perfect game as a Yankee and Doc a no hitter as a Yankee. As a Mets fan who HATES the Yankee these are painful memories.

Let me also add a FUCK THE WILPONS AKA The Coupons

Hey don’t forget the Mets made the World Series in the year 2000 that must have been cool.

Didn't mention him by name but you sure knew who I was talking about.

TDS is people who voted for him in 2016

Wow that part about Larsen and Yogi being at the cone perfect game is crazy

The Larsen/Berra thing was pretty amazing in it's own right. Pretty moving as it happened because Yogi was, and still is, adored by the fan base. It put a dark chapter to bed.

Cone was masterful that day. Although he "only" had 10 strikeouts, he never had to work a count over 2-0. To give you an idea how in the zone Cone was, there was a rain delay in the third inning for over 30 mins and he didn't miss a beat when he came back.

^not the first time Jim Abbott had a joke thrown his way. He took it all in stride. While a lot of people know of the Larson/Berra/Cone connection, fewer are aware that on the day Abbott threw his no hitter, it was the 70th anniversary of "Sad Sam" Jones' no-no. That was the 2nd no hitter in Yankee history and the only one in the history of baseball to be thrown with NO strikeouts.
