Here is a poem I wrote inspired by the Grateful Dead shows at Winterland in October 1978. It was a month after Egypt and they were projecting slides from the trip behind the stage. "Blue Pyramid" was also the name of some local product that was circulating at the time.
Today (Tuesday, October 12) I am the featured poet on Spoken World Online, a weekly global event that has run every week since March 2020. The show begins at 11:30am PT (2:30pm ET) and I go on about an hour later. I'll be reading a bunch of poems, including "Blue Pyramid." BLUE PYRAMID
Blue moon evening
in a blue room
barely autumn
quietly drifting along
into winter.
I see a month gone
and a full moon
electric frenzy
‘neath the Blue Pyramid.
Gleaming in the hieroglyphic dark
mysteries so far away
from all that we know.
Sphinx images.
Lions in the night.
Lines of darkness.
Greatly moved
‘neath your moon and your stars
but in what night desert
stands that Blue Pyramid…
There is yet more to tell
for this is no museum
in which hangs
a tapestry of words
that the desert sands
blow through.
Seek not to solve the mystery.
Relax
in the desert night.
