Jazz and conversation

Titles and commentary and whatever.

np: Larry Coryell - Spaces

Great lineup on this title. Enjoying a nice local session ale along an original 1970 Vanguard pressing. Hot outside tonite.

np: Frank Wess - Wess to Memphis

I'm sure the lineup info would reveal a lot of talented names but there is nothin on the gatefold but the names of a bunch of pop songs!

Classy production, tasteful arrangements, and inspired and deliciously varied work put in by the artists performing on this session. All sorts of cool instruments employed.

np: Hampton Hawes - Playin' in the Yard

The way he switches between acoustic piano and Fender Rhodes is just awesome. Tasteful player whose unique background really informs a swinging, gospel, almost spiritual approach (see: Universe). The band is quite simpatico and they churn out a muscular sound, although the mix itself leaves something to be desired (and I've never been really impressed with any of the early 70s Montreux recordings, in spite of some incredible performances). A favorite little sleeper gem.

I'm enjoying the commentary; you're not alone here.

So far I haven't heard any of these recordings but I like reading what you have to say.

Also not familiar.

Ok just wrapping up..

np: John Mayall - Jazz / Blues Fusion

I mean I've only really heard a couple guys in this band (that I know of; Blue Mitchell, Freddy Robinson) but the performances are fire. Fire fire, great stuff. John Mayall in his prime, band is off the charts good. Worth listening to, not really jazz - but they jazz it up. Good solos all around (mapped out among the liner notes on the back cover). Nice.
