'Basha' on St. Catherine's near Place Ville Marie has Shawarma, Shish Taouk, Falafel and the coldest water fountain in the Universe. - 705 St-Catherine W., Centre-Ville (Downtown ...) If you're near there anyway, (downtown commercial area) the actual PVM is the very very tall building. On the top floor used to be a bar-restaurant with a stunning panoramic view of the entire city. You could go in there and get a Beer, but I think it's now an observation deck. Anyway it's a great elevator ride up & down so check it out.
If you're out at night you could stroll the length of St. Denis street and see many bars, restaurants, night life. Couple blocks parallel is St. Laurent street with a few good 'Smoked Meat' places (their version of Pastrami).
"Jardin Deer" (Deer Garden) in Chinatown always had the best Chinese food at great prices. If you're in Chinatown, 'Old Montreal' is nearby. Lotsa cool historic stuff there.
Don't know how many days you are there, but some sort of Métro pass will get you around on bus + subway without trying to comprehend the French "NO PARKING" signs... It can be difficult finding a spot to park. I had many many parking tickets when I lived there.
If you can park in some residential area and take Métro everywhere, it will save some hassle. Also you can get off the train and explore the vast Underground malls. The above-mentioned Place Ville Marie has an extensive underground that goes for blocks & blocks. Once you're in there you could wander for hours and surface in a different part of the city.
However, I think that's better left to Winter since it's so damn Nice this time of year. The actual Mount Royal is a huge public park, many trails to wander up there and also a cool Cemetery with giant stone constructions.
Was up there a month ago or so. WeeDeliver. 604-396-8064. Fast and reliable. Bud, pens. No edibles as the college kids get too fucked up on them he said, then they end up in the emergency room.
I was going to suggest some Museums; you picked a good one!
Here's a 'Smoked Meat' tip... The really nice spots were up on "The Main" (St. Laurent area) but "Ben's" downtown has/had mediocre smoked meat at not a great price. However, the walls are/were lined with photographs of every celebrity that ever visited, from liek the 1500's onward.
Could be worth a peek.
All my recollections are 30+ years outdated from when I attended McGill. Basha still survives; the original near Place-Ville-Marie has the Magical water fountain. Also the ground-level open space was the site of the 1967 appearance of Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane.
Was there a few years ago for Jazz Fest. Take a walking tour of McGill Campus. It's right downtown; cool old buildings and big lawns. To my perception, Rue St.-Denis area near Plateau has the coolest Vibe for night-life.
i had some pizza at a joint called gema pizzeria in the little italy neighborhood, very good neapolitan pizza. superb really. best i've had since i was last at keste in the west village in nyc a coupe years ago.
also hit this spot called Le Coq de L'Est 2015 inc-incredible tandoori chicken and ribs. interesting place. very good. montreal has good food.
Montreal has a pretty good music scene, but it's not a place where you'll hear too many jambands, (there are like, maybe 50 or less Dead/Phish heads there).
They used to like their prog-rock, too. Probably still do. Those pretentious Quebecers.
I trust that you are having a Wonderful time up there in the Big City of Tiny Lights.
Can't really condense all my time there into a Pin-Head, and stuff changes.
Botanical Gardens (Jardin Botanique) are groovy all year. There are strange neighborhoods on the fringe which are forty years back from current Time.
When I resided there, the Place-Ville-Marie was the tallest edifice around. Discotheque called 737 and up top, Bar-Restaurant which was '747' or something like that. Maybe '727' and '737' --- who recalls anymore.
I used to meet shady people at the Bar for a Pint, and enjoy the View after NE Spring or Fall GD tour. From way up there, you could see Everything.
No matter what, there's some incredible Vibe to that place.
Used to be a pool hall on the corner or St Catherine and Crescent st. You walk down stairs and ask the Iranians for hash. Some guy would reach under a pool table and pull out a baseball size of hash and pinch off a gram. No worries about being robbed or anything like that. Those were the days, my days were early 80's.
Used to buy lousy microdot in or around Berri Metro on St Denis St. I also remember going to the park across from the Forum and scoring there as well. Probably half of the arcades downtown and on the plateau used to sell sweet Afghani hash you just don't find any more. There was also an apartment full of Jamaicans in NDG that always had little envelopes of sensi. We're talking '86 - '88.
On my only trip to Montreal in 1971, we tried to buy some hash in the park but all we could find was some mescalin.
So we took it.
I'm still not sure if that Motown band in matching contrasting psychedelic sharkskin suits that we hung out with in Mount Royal Park that day were real or not.

So I could only find one foto
So I could only find one foto of the interior of PVM's top-floor bar / restaurant.
Looks pretty much how I remember it in the '80's. Other photos show a rooftop (outdoor) bar but I don't recall ever being able to go on the roof.
What I remember is the bar / restaurant on top floor and Disco on floor below.
