Was the philzone all that more mean-spirited during it's last couple years?

It always seemed pretty rough around the edges to me.

 people got into amusing, fairly heated scraps and rivalries all the time.

It was part of the fun.

I thought throwing the ass glitter over-hand, as Schnee used to say, was something we prided ourselves on.

We could dish it out and, hopefully, take the heat in return, rules of engagement and all that with little to no moderation

I don't think either place was/is mean spirited. 

I think some people speak to others as if they hold a higher rank.

I got a previous post reminding us what went on most of the time from what I remember. I was on PZ from 2002 thru the end. Met up with some cool peeps & still have friends I made mainly from first contact there. I felt by the end it got pretty abrasive. >>> I ask why Zonahs aren't happy here? Is it because there is less trolling, less insulting posts, less drama, no sock puppets, less name calling etc.. Just because you got used to all of the BS flying on PZ & found it entertaining doesn't mean that that's the way a message board is supposed to be. I think that is what happened and some of us are now longing for & looking for that same type of abusive entertainment here...just a thought. Also, if you're bored with what Zonahs are posting then post something yourself that you think would be interesting.  <<<<. 

I guess another way to put it is it seemed to me that there were more posts being put up with the intention of making someone else upset than posting to share opinions / info / cool things.

I recall Charles as being batshite crazy posting nonstop annoying crap....he was detrimental. Negative shit piled up...no ones fault except those who did it but there was a lot of it going on. And let's also mention that because all of those threads it made it harder to find the needles in the Zonehaystack cool threads. I personally can barely keep up here and feel like I am missing cool threads so I regularly look back days earlier because most likely I missed cool threads.

i could tell by the thread titles or first post which threads were going to be about whatever the kirley thing was and  just skipped them over for the most part.

i was there for the whole thing, and i couldnt tell you for the life of me who kirley was, what happened, what he did, etc etc. i rarely saw him post or any drama, although i did see alot of humorous and sometimes angry, brief references to him in some of the threads i liked to read.

depending on the threads you chose to open and what you enjoyed reading there were many different philzones, it was like a choose your own adventure book...you chose where to go, and if you didnt choose it you never read those chapters

i chose to focus on the bay area music philzone and the offensive shitposting in good fun philzone. i am glad to have never visited the kirley philzone

I approve of this message.

For a place that looks, feels and smells like the Philzone, it's surely a lot less fun. I can appreciate the attempt at fostering a positive environment but it comes across as hippie social engineering. It's kinda' the antithesis of the spirit of the Philzone, at least the old Philzone before it became a closed-wall board.

Viva is a like a Grateful Dead show but without the filthy tour rats. Sure, it's cleaner and safer but also a lot less interesting. Am I making a case for filthy tour rats? I guess I am. 

I'm glad we got all these crowds of great groovy hippie chicks back on board now thanks to the draconian admin practices. There must be at least 3 now 

I got an email about a post I made. I don't exactly agree that what I said was over the top but it is not my house, I am a guest here.   I will abide by the rules of the house while I am here.

Mark, I think you have that backwards. If someone isn't in line with admin here, maybe Viva is not for them and they should post somewhere else .

This community existed long before Viva, and has always been made up of a very diverse group of posters. The arrogance of telling people to "post somewhere else" isn't at all congruent with that fact.

Viva is doing exactly what I want it to. I zone because I think it's entertaining. If I didn't find it entertaining, I wouldn't zone.

That doesn't mean I don't have my own criticism, or agree with other zoner's criticism of some the current practices by Admin. Does a zoner have to be in alignment with admin to enjoy the Zone? Nope.

I never really understood or agreed with the way stuff is run around these parts. Although I will accept the rules.
