Says the guy that flew across the country with a bottle of Dom Pérignon to see the GD.
No Thom, this is really what it has always been; an opportunity for some people to spend their money on what they derive enjoyment from and feel is worth to them, and an opportunity for other people to sneer, criticize and feel superior to those people.
I'm guessing that there were a lot of wealthy people who spent a lot of money going to Dead shows, and especially on Tour. Not everyone was slinging something to get from show to show, and not everyone was camping in lots. The 4 star hotels were always booked with Tourheads who flew from show to show, ate at great restaurants, etc.
I don't know, Thom, you seem to be romanticizing the "old days" quite a bit. You're a liberal at heart. Just embrace it.
Red Rocks, too. Now that they banned tarps, people are laying out Mexicans to save their places. I hear that the up-and-comers at TXR are putting Mexicans on the rail instead of hoodies.
What's up with the black maids right behind Trump. They don't even go with order of the picture. I can just see the photographer setting up the picture. You black people over here right behind Trump. No not you - just the women.
After the large crowds came for a second year to see dead and company in large stadium shows – that this weekend of shows would sell out was always a given. Did someone really think the shows would not sell out? Didn't Bobby and Billy with SCI sell out their Mexican Riviera shows? Didn't Futhur sell out their Mexican shows? Why wouldn't the shows sell out?
Once again, Lance is 100% spot on – same as it ever was.
I dunno, if you look at it as a vacation to mexico plus a dead theme and music, its not too bad for those that can. I couldn't. But if If I had the loot and free time, I'd think about going. Heck I might even go see Phil in Hawaii! To each their own and all that.
Pretty funny to compare buying a good seat at the Capital to blowing thousands of dollars to hear John Mayer pretend he's Jerry to Bobby's tepid rhythms while swilling booze in Mexico. Believe me, it's worth every penny not to have to suffer the presence of the rail rats on the floor while enjoying superior sound. Some of us actually go to hear the music.
But like Fly said, to each their own. You want to save a few bucks while standing up all night and not have the best sound in the house, be my guest.
I had a Jaguar, now I have a Mercedes. Both purchased used. You can buy a great high end car with low milage for the price of a Toyota Camry if you know what you're doing. I'll never apologize for appreciating quality; it's one of the things I learned at Graeful Dead concerts.
Even if I had that money laying around I wouldn't pay it to see DeadCo in Mexico. I have zero issues with others blowing their hard earned cash and trust funds on it, and I also have no issues with the band for doing it.
My guess is that it will be more expensive to see Phil's bar band in Hawaii for NYE. Fuck it - if people pay, who cares?
I'd certainly go if I had that kind of surplus Ca$h, and I could bring the Hüsky. With airfare and all, it seemed like it would cost somewhere between 4-6 thousand dollars. That's a whole lot of Firewood !!
And although I've developed great Dog-sitter resources, he loves a good Beach Party.
