As part of the iconic band’s annual “Meet-Up at the Movies” on Aug. 1 — what would’ve been Jerry Garcia’s 75th birthday — Fathom Events will present a previously unreleased concert film of the group’s July 12, 1989 show that occurred at Washington, D.C.’s RFK Stadium.

Bump for Jerry's 75th
Bump for Jerry's 75th Birthday.
Hope those attending the Red Rocks and TXR festivities have a hoot. With the heat starting to spike here, I'll enjoy the AC and reliving this show on the big screen tonight.

I'll have Dreamshirte on . . .
I saw 1st 5 shows of this summer '89 run, this next show was kind of a letdown after how great those 1st 5 shows were (Foxboro, Buffalo, Phila, Giants Stad x 2), and the 3 Alpine Vly tour closers, so I doubt I've ever even listened to this show, so kind of a treat to go see this. @ least there's no I Will Take You Home . . .

No way could i sit through this one. This was one of many of many of my all time favorite shows when my entire tour group still lived in the area. Parts of this day i can remember like yesterday, for some reason this day sticks out more than most. Yesterday i texted one of my homies that now lives in florida, he assured me we attended both nights..
Fond memories.

I enjoyed watching the show
I enjoyed watching the show last night. I attended the original, but don't remember too much of it. It was hot, my girlfriend and I were selling veggie sandwiches and juice to make gas and ticket money, and I think it was all starting to feel like too much work. D.C. was where I'd grown up, and where my parents still lived. I did remember thinking about my mom when Phil sang the "if you see Saint Annie, please tell her thanks a lot line" in "Tom Thumb's Blues". I drove down to my parents house the next day to tell her exactly that, something I'd forgotten all about until she reminded me a couple of years ago. It's funny to think this now at 52, but then, as a 24 year old, I was starting to feel like I was older and world-weary.
Watching the show again last night, it was obvious that Jerry was in a good place and enjoying himself. Lots of grins between him and Brent, Bobby and when Bruce Hornsby sat in. The Bruce/Brent piano/organ duo on "Women Are Smarter" rocked. It's hard to comprehend Brent looking as engaged and merry as he does here and realize that he would be overdosing at New Years and dead in just a little more than a year.
Thought this show was good fun, but nothing terribly special. Good versions of 1/2 Step, Tom Thumb's and Far From Me in the 1st Set (Brent's "this is the last time I play this song for you, bitch" was intense). The Cassidy jam didn't really take off. The Drums were probably the best part of the 2nd Set, although the Bruce sit-in was fun (the part where Bobby fucked up and comes in early with a line was funny, eliciting grins from Jerry, Brent, Mickey and Bobby himself) and the Jerry ballads (Ship Of Fools, Black Peter, Black Muddy River) were all well-delivered. The Dear Mr. Fantasy had some heat, but cooled down after Brent teased the Hey Jude coda but the band broke it off. Bobby's rockstar antics on Lovelight were funny.
All in all, a fun night, and a good way to beat the heat and chill out. It would be cool if they chose a Jerry Band show instead for one of these someday.

Never a good sign, and definitely not encouraging me to spring for this box set.

I was most impressed that
I was most impressed that they went back & re-edited the original individual camera footage for current viewing - there were none of those cheezy annoying "special effects' during the jamming/drums/space that render most of those era videos unwatchable - so instead of just issuing the original stadium video monitor feed & selling it to us, they actually put some real work into this one. Albeit for a lackluster post-drums show (do an issue like this for the show before @ Giants Stad - THAT would be AWESOME). Interesting to watch Jerry playing the digified Wolf during Space, & that @ this show he didn't switch back until well into the next song (Miracle), all the shows I saw that era I seem to remember he switched back before the drummers came back. Then in Sept he debuted the fully digified Tiger. You can tell in this show he seemed kinda awkward & uncomfortable playing Wolf during Miracle, when he switches back to Tiger it feels/sounds a lot more familiar/relaxed.
