It's supposed to be 109 deg. this week. We can go swimming, go to the coast, drive around in an air-conditioned car, or take a cold shower, but the cat can't do any of that. He's 17 - that's 119 in cat years. He doesn't tolerate the high temps well, and this coming heat wave could send him to the great cat litter in the sky.
So, went down to the locally-owned hardware store and got a room A.C. for the cat!

We used to pet Devlin with an ice cube in front of a fan. She liked it.
We have an AC unit but no insulation and a black tar roof. It gets hot in here.

New house has central AC and I'm never looking back. We spend plenty of time outside during the summer but when I'm indoors I want to but comfortable.
The windows will open soon enough for fresh air.

you will love your new buy
you will love your new buy for yourself as well as the cat. i bought a lil window unit for 100 bucks at walmart a few years back and have taken it with me to multiple houses, take it down when i stay with my mom, its cold and really durable apparently.
my parents never turn on the heat or A/C, when i was a kid, they were the "put on a sweater" or "use a fan" types of folks. which is fine, they have a big house that costs alot to cool or heat.
but one of the first things i did after i moved out was to keep that A/C or heat CRANKED.
slacker - you ever look into that silver bubble wrap type insulation? goes up quick and works great

In anticipation of the forecasted record heat wave this week, we went out and got one of those portable AC units. There was about 10 left when we got to Lowes yesterday around noon and as we were in the checkout line, the rest were getting snagged up fast. Glad we got there when we did.
Cats should be ok, but I am worried about the chickens. We plan on freezing shredded zucchini and other treats and giving it to them to help them stay cool.

My modest window-AC dates
My modest window-AC dates back to 1999 and still works !! It's a 'Sharp' branded unit that was maybe 100 bucks back then. The dog loves basking in its chilly breeze when it's hot out. Has a flat pull-out filter that gathers room dust, you can hose it off and dry it.
Might look for one of those floor-standing units as Summer rolls down and they go on clearance.

Heat was the fireplace --- which I split and stacked wood from august until november --- and cool was 'go wet a towel and put it on your head!'.
I've said to my parents 'couldn't you have bought a fucking fan for us???' I'm still perplexed with how inept they were.

Central here. But, I program the thermostat more generously because of the dogs, and time they spend in the house when we're not here.
