Can anyone hear Mickey Hart?

Forums:

Every time I see Dead and Co, and even seeing the Mickey Hart Band at the Cap in Port Chester, I can see him hitting drums, but I never hear anything that I can say "that's two drummers" or "that's Mickey Hart".  I'm not complaining, just wondering if anyone else can hear him playing.  I wonder if it's just so terrible that it's left out of the mix.  I enjoy drums/space, especially since Fare Thee Well, when it's got more structure/drama, so I'm not a Mickey hater, just wondering what's going on with the mix.

They need to turn Oteil up in the mix. This music demands bass up front.

I only hear his contribution during drums.

This

He's using those brushes for most of the show.

Can Hart still hear?

It's a good thing, especially on that ride all the time.

I bet Lost Sailor sounds less busy.

what are you saying floops?

havent been to a show

only listened to a few songs

and i easily hear him.

Keep an eye on his shoes. Mickey has his own version of "if the shoe fits your hand, play it"

So this band is really becoming part of the fabric of America, huh?

The jam band part of it anyway.

Well...they are giving the music to the people---that's a good thing I guess.

Mickey was removed from the house mix sometime in 1991.

He's never been told.

Mark!! He may not be able to hear, but he CAN read....

In the interest of keeping it positive: Mickey has had a very blessed career.

Turtle, Mickey should only ever have been an occasional guest.

If the shoe fits your hand you must play it in the band.

Nice!^^^

"Turtle, Mickey should only ever have been an occasional guest. "

That's being generous.  He should never have been let back in the band in '76 but in typical GD fashion no one would speak up.

I'm actually OK with  the Mickster having been in the GD post-hiatus, but they should've (and should now) restrict him to a percussion rack - no traps.

The times I've seen the band I can hear him but I have to be looking directly at him to notice exactly what he's doing. And yeah, that bass drum seems to be for show only.

A bit of show biz pap there, but that's OK with me because I have always loved the look of two drum sets on a stage, and just like the back end of the real band's career, Dead & Co. is a SHOW, so that wouldn't be an issue for me even if I was a fan of the band.

Mickey has always been a unique talent with an ear for rhythm that no one else could hear, which was/is something all the essential members of the Grateful Dead have had. It seems a shame that for whatever reasons he won't or can't play the drums like he used to.

And as always I disagree with the notion that he shouldn't have re-joined the group in '75. I think he significantly added to the brilliant mix of dynamic sound they made until the mid-'80s, when he along with everyone in the band began listening to each other less and to themselves more and started just wailing away as a big show arena rock act. Whatever, it sure worked for them fanatically, and it continues to work for them.

But for me it was always telling why back in the days when the band played together as an ensemble Phil would spend the majority of a show turned and facing Mickey.

Dude knows his rhythm.

Or maybe Phil was worried Mick would start pegging sticks at his back, but I prefer to believe that Phil just got off on Mickey's unique groove.

Either way, I find Mickey's use of brushes far less annoying than his mallets faze, and I think it's good that he's out there. I don't think Mickey hurts this new group at all, and the Rhythm Devils portion of their shows have been excellent every night I've seen them, and are worth money on their own.

Good for him, good for them, good for the kids.

Lol. This is so DeadCo.

File under Fashion > Shopping.

Mickey is a non-entity there in name only. And his 2 min on his big Invention the beam. Would like to here these guys with Russo.

There was some kick-ass Arabian music going along to drums at Citifield the other night, and as I crossed the total GA floor with the breeze blowing stiffly, I felt like Lawrence of fucking Arabia.. I then hit one of the port-a-potty's by the Bullpen Gate when Mickey hit that last huge droning note on The Beam and the port-o-potty shook. I walked out absolutely dying with devilish laughter, as did the others who followed from their respective commodes.. ..best piss break ever!! (nothing to really do with Drums per se, love the new take- but I had to pee)..

agreed but da chief will never allow it...no Phil and the powers that b turn down da bass..same as it ever was...a shame really...

prerecorded drums or deadtronica as the Mickster likes to call it ..blows...

Outside of Billy, the whole outfit is quite unbecoming.

Is it a straight up affront to legacy of the Grateful Dead? Is it a provocation of anything that resembles decency and truth? I'm not saying that but I'm not not saying it either.

I hear Irving Azoff is quite fond of the band however. Hang your hat where you can.

You should be glad you can't hear Mickey the guys a douche

ba humbug

Mickey can't even hear Mickey. Guy is deaf as a rock.

And what LLTD said.

They don't mike his drums.  Because he has lost it.

I would have to listen first

^hahaha

Paying money to see John Mayer in any capacity is just one giant LOL.

Illogical yet fascinating.

Can Hart still hear?

Upper registers only.

As in "Ka-Ching!"

mickey's band was one of the most interesting post gd configurations to me...

he's definitely good with bells and whistles...

I've been playing drums for 35 years. I've always loved mickey's vibe esp in my touring days of late 80s-early 90s but his drumming in his first tenure with the band annoys the crap out of me. he can play but does way too many poorly placed snare rolls and show off type crap that sounds stupid. Billy needed to boss him around more. It seems he reined it in at times (the Live Dead shows) but Charles Mingus would have thrown him and his drums out the window well before that.
