PS: I've picked up one of many boxes of LP's being stored at my Mom's house. Looks like they aren't in alphabetical order, which makes me wonder if somebody's been messing with them.
Hoping to transfer a few onto my computer and try to get the kids interested in this old-fashioned technology.
Hell yeah, Johnny D. If you have any potential interest in creating a little transcontinental record trading situation, please feel free to shoot me a message (email in profile). i know most zoners are not very into hip hop, let alone more popular hip hop...but holy god, this is easily the best album of 2015 and the best hip hop album in well over a decade.
much of the instrumentation is live music(on one track the "beat" is just a fast paced, complex, rhythmic jazz tune), using folks like p-funk, kamasi washington, thundercat, etc etc, rather than electronic "beats"
Chris Schlarb's Psychic Temple out of California has a new thing coming down the road, too. I really liked the ambient/jazz split they did with Mike Watt. A lot.
Before I die I want to go to the NE in the spring or fall and see a couple shows from Max Creek. I have listened to 100's of their shows and it's a must for me. They seem like they draw a fun crowd too.
Exploring Bill Laswell's many Dub albums lately, usually 1st thing of the day.
Right now, Miles Davis: Agharta, now Pangea, probably Dark Magus next, all on You Tube (yes I know crappy MP3).
Nothing like going back to the original Well of heavy dark psychedelic funk jazz insanity . . . Listening on You Tube, I have these on Vinyl but not CD, never upgraded as there was sooooo much controversy over the mixes of various releases. My "analog" stereo system doesn't work anymore so no vinyl listening . . .
I've listened to a few Praxis live shows, Buckethead can shred, lots of folks think he's all technique & no soul, but to me no different than many of the alpha fusion guitar shredders out there.
Dark Magus (recorded live 3/30/74) is the fuckin' SHIT, man, gotta listen to this post show in the, um, "mood" one of these days, been a long time since I did . . .
No wonder Jerry said they shoulda been opening for Miles (even tho that was a few years prior)
Tedeschi Trucks Band & Friends -"Sly Stone Medley" - Live at Red Rocks
At the Wheels of Soul Tour stop in Red Rocks on June 13, 2015, Tedeschi Trucks Band are joined by Sharon Jones and members of the Dap-Kings (Binky Griptite, Cochemea Gastelum, Chris Davis, Mike Buckley, Saundra Williams and Starr Duncan) and Doyle Bramhall II for an incredible medley of the Sly Stone classics "Sing A Simple Song/I Want To Take You Higher~!
Sonny Rollins – tenor saxophone
Jim Hall – guitar
Bob Cranshaw – bass
Ben Riley – drums
Harry "H.T." Saunders – drums (replaces Riley on "God Bless the Child")
Outtakes from an unrealized Miles Davis/Larry Coryell project. It's the same piece over & over but many differences in each version make it pretty listenable:
Nancy Wilson & the Cannnonball Adderley Quintet - Nancy Wilson & the Cannnonball Adderley Quintet
Alto Saxophone – Cannonball
Bass – Sam Jones
Cornet – Nat Adderley
Drums – Louis Hayes
Piano – Joe Zawinul
Vocals – Nancy Wilson (tracks: A1, A3, A5, B1, B3, B5)
Nancy Wilson & the Cannnonball Adderley Quintet - Nancy Wilson & the Cannnonball Adderley Quintet
Alto Saxophone – Cannonball
Bass – Sam Jones
Cornet – Nat Adderley
Drums – Louis Hayes
Piano – Joe Zawinul
Vocals – Nancy Wilson (tracks: A1, A3, A5, B1, B3, B5)
Miles Davis – trumpet, piano (on "Sid's Ahead")
Julian "Cannonball" Adderley – alto saxophone
John Coltrane – tenor saxophone
Red Garland – piano
Paul Chambers – double bass
Philly Joe Jones – drums
V\A - The Broadway Scene (Played By America's Greatest Jazzmen)
A1 Coleman Hawkins – I Believe In You
A2 Coleman Hawkins – Climb Every Mountain
A3 Tommy Flanagan – Be My Host
A4 Gene Ammons – Till There Was You
B1 Dave Pike – As Long As He Needs Me
B2 Frank Wess – Little Me
B3 Willis Jackson – What Kind Of Fool Am I ?
B4 Ted Curson – Show Me
Another Van Gelder-engineered album, this one on Prestige with some outstanding artists doing swinging renditions of showtunes. The musicians supporting the bandleaders above are equally outstanding... Thad Jones, Kenny Burrell, Tommy Flanagan, Eddie Calhoun, Roy Haynes among others. Really cool little compilation that showcases some lesser known greats.

Dead & Co. 6/7/17
The "tempo" issue has been beaten to death.
And it still has more pep than the actual tempos.
I heard the intro to "Jack Straw" and my first thought was "Jack Stroke."
Some passable BG vox on "Crazy Fingers." GD had their own travails there.

i know most zoners are not very into hip hop, let alone more popular hip hop...but holy god, this is easily the best album of 2015 and the best hip hop album in well over a decade.
much of the instrumentation is live music(on one track the "beat" is just a fast paced, complex, rhythmic jazz tune), using folks like p-funk, kamasi washington, thundercat, etc etc, rather than electronic "beats"
