There is an article in our local paper about this feat. Alex had been working on this project for 8 years. The other 7 years did not feel right. This time he felt good and went for it. He holds the speed record on el cap the nose route too - 2 hr and 23 minutes. It is over 30+ pitches...3000+ feet of hard climbing...that is climbing almost every pitch in 5 minutes for hours straight. Look at the exposure in that picture.
First 1/3 of el cap is not vertical though close and is rated around 5.9 or 5.10. Second third is vertical and last third is overhanging. Last few hundred feet is easy slab climbing. Think it was lynn hill who first free climbed el cap the nose first at something like 5.14a. Hardest pitch is around 2000 feet off the ground. Climbing on very small holds on that pitch. If he fell off there you go to the ground...
Mental capacity and ability to focus must be extreme to do at those heights. Any fear and you could just fall off...
The ascent will be featured in a Nat Geo documentary. Can't WAIT!!!
>>>>>Climbing on very small holds on that pitch. If he fell off there you go to the ground...
Yeah, that section has so few holds if you don't keep moving forward you'll end up slipping off the face. You can't rest and think about anything there.
He must eat a lot of insects. Bugs can walk around safely on vertical rock shelves or even ceilings. This fellow is a Highly-advanced humanoid/insect Hybrid.

It has been free climbed (ropes used to catch you if you fall but not to help you upclimb) before. This was the first free solo (no ropes) ascent.

He understands and accepts the risks. He's also mentioned that if he was married or had kids it would influence his decision to free solo large walls.
