Isn't that what this is all about; an age old tug-o-war between those who place their self-interests above the rest vs. those who seek greater prosperity and harmony for all?
Seems a rather simplistic way to look at it. From what I have observed, there are probably a few thousand shades of grey between the two and many people in each shade.
Perhaps it is simplistic & I'm kind of just regurgitating a more general age-old theme from what I heard on an old podcast from the Thomas Jefferson Hour yesterday:
I just find it interesting how there's been kind of a tug-o-war in the U.S. from the get go with Hamilton and the Federalists vs. Jefferson and the (Democratic) Republicans within the context of the election of 1800.
At one point during the podcast, Clay Jenkinson - the creator of the show, who is actually an Humanities' Scholar - mentions this to be an "age old dichotomy" that can be seen through ancient civilizations.
I'm sure there are many shades, but my suspicion is there are in fact simply two "poles" and one's shade is still nonetheless dictated by the pole it's subsumed.
V.O. Key, author of Southern Politics, calls it the struggle between haves and have-nots. I agree with the notion that the theme of history is the gradual transfer of power and resources from the few to the many. Never with the agreement of the haves.
Then, it boils down to one's idea of human nature. Are the have-nots just inferior or are they victims of systematic criminal activity? Are haves deserving or are they the beneficiaries of systematic criminal activity? As woody Guthrie said some steal with a gun or knife, some steal with the paper and the pen.
Slacker, do you have lots of sex? I have run across several movies where pool guy shows up for work and gets his brains fucked out.

In terms of the gradual transfer of power from few to many, I suspect it's mostly been a game of "three steps forward, two steps back" ... ultimately advancing one step at a time ... in spite of systemic injustices and/or individuals who may have had a disproportionate influence over others. Ken Follett's trilogy starting with Fall of Giants is a great fictional device on this front ... likewise Pillars of the Earth in other respects.
The weird thing is that said evolution is kind of like Planet of the Apes: the "reset button" is never too far away, and it then it starts all over again.

What if one chooses to NOT
What if one chooses to NOT have a belief-system founded in Religion or Politics ??
That throws the religiorons and politidiots into frenzies of categorization.
But I'm not an Anabaptist or Spinner, nor am I a soft-communist.
I am the official supplier of Firewood to the South Jerseyland Pie - Throwing Team, and damn proud of it.
