Iowa may be without individual health plans if insurer pulls out
DES MOINES — Tens of thousands of individual health policy consumers in Iowa could be left with no health insurance options if the last carrier for most of the state stops selling such policies, as it suggested Wednesday.
Medica, a Minnesota-based health insurer, released a statement suggesting it was close to following two larger carriers in deciding not to sell such policies in Iowa for 2018, because of instability in the market.
“Without swift action by the state or Congress to provide stability to Iowa’s individual insurance market, Medica will not be able to serve the citizens of Iowa in the manner and breadth that we do today. We are examining the potential of limited offerings, but our ability to stay in the Iowa insurance market in any capacity is in question at this point,” the company’s statement said.
And a little reality check for the "pre existing conditions" crowd...
Prior to ObamaCare, 90% of people with a pre existing condition were already covered through a government or employer health care plan. The remaining 10% were people who were purchasing their own plans independently. There was a three year transition window as ObamaCare was phased in that allowed those people to use government subsidies to cover that expense during the transition period. Over that three year period less than 115,000 people applied for this funding, a miniscule number in the scheme of things. So the entire "pre existing condition" scare is just another straw man set up by the progressive left that wants a single payer system (which might actually work for basic coverage BTW, but that's not what the left will go for; they want it all) and will fight any changes to a system that is obviously failing miserably.
>>> Prior to ObamaCare, 90% of people with a pre existing condition were already covered through a government or employer health care plan. The remaining 10% were people who were purchasing their own plans independently.

>>>>>>single payer system (which might actually work for basic coverage BTW, but that's not what the left will go for; they want it all) and will fight any changes to a system that is obviously failing miserably.
I'll be curious to see if this starts to gain some real traction over the next few months, years, etc.
FUCK YOU GOP.
There is a special place in hell for all these shit bags passing legislation without even reading it.
Trump clearly doesn't know how to read - he's so fuckin' stupid and so are you if you agree with this short-sited vote.
YAY! Let's get this Trumpcare going - and fast. Before the Mid term elections, please. Maybe when the Republican voters realize that they're getting screwed, they might vote for better representation?
They know it won't get through the Senate but they are able to claim that they succeeded in passing a repeal, and can blame the Democrats for killing it in the Senate.
It is opposed by virtually every patient advocacy group and everyone in the health care industry.
Congress is still exempted from the new rules that allow states to waive essential benefits.
It raises premiums dramatically for older people.
It removes Obamacare's protection against being turned down for a pre-existing condition.
It would steadily gut Medicaid spending for the very poorest.
It removes coverage from at least 24 million people, probably more.
It slashes taxes on the rich by about a trillion dollars over ten years.
-Kevin Drum
Trump entered the presidency with the only kind of power that matters. He didn't owe Wall Street a thing. He didn't owe anyone -- not donors, lobbyists nor any political party. What he had was the people, passionately on his side.
But as soon as he got into office, Trump started giving away his miraculous, unprecedented power. Hey, Wall Street! Even though you didn't give me any money, is it too late to be your friend?
I can't explain why the GOP does anything. I suspect they are celebrating because they finally got something passed in the House, even though it will die there and it will very likely cost them in the mid-term elections.
Democrats mocked Republicans from the House floor Thursday after GOP representatives voted to pass the American Health Care Act by chanting "na-na-na-na, na-na-na-na, hey, hey, hey, goodbye," at their counterparts.
The chant appeared to be in reference to Democrats' belief that a vote for the AHCA, the Republican proposal to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, would result in many of the Republican representatives being voted out of office next year.
Wasn't it just 3-4 weeks ago when Paul Ryan stepped to the podium and said "Unfortunately, Obamacare is the law of the land for the foreseeable future".
Did the Republicans basically just make a few changes to the initial bill and cram it through for another vote?
I admit I've been a little checked out on this topic as I'm fortunate enough to have great healthcare coverage though my employer. They pay 90% of my premium; leaving me with a $150 cost a month for health/dental for my daughter and I. Totally reasonable cost.
I did start paying more attention several months back and, I gotta say, I'm pretty appalled at how this thing is playing out. I think, in general, it speaks volumes to one's character how they treat the sick, weak and incapable.
You might think Obamacare would violate my generally conservative principles, but ...
If any European conservative party were to propose such a system, it would be pilloried as a far-right plot. And yet the Republican Party opposed it with a passion that became very hard for me to disentangle from hatred of Obama himself.
The Trump GOP’s attempt to abolish it is therefore, to my mind, neither conservative nor decent. It’s reactionary and callous. Its effective abandonment of 95 percent of us with preexisting conditions will strike real terror in a lot of people’s hearts. Its gutting of Medicaid will force millions of the poor to lose health care almost altogether. It will bankrupt the struggling members of the working and middle classes who find themselves in a serious health crisis....
