"Trump has phone call w Taiwan President, 1st by US Pres or Pres-elect since 1979," goepolitical expert Ian Bremmer, president of Eurasia Group, tweeted on Friday. "Beijing will be absolutely incensed."

"Trump almost surely unaware of Taiwan-China sensitivities before taking President's call," Bremmer added. "They don't yet have Asia expertise on team."

Evan Medeiros, former Asia director at the White House national security council, told the Financial Times that "the Chinese leadership will see this as a highly provocative action, of historic proportions."

“Regardless if it was deliberate or accidental, this phone call will fundamentally change China’s perceptions of Trump’s strategic intentions for the negative," he said. "With this kind of move, Trump is setting a foundation of enduring mistrust and strategic competition for US-China relations."

Washington — President-elect Donald J. Trump spoke by telephone with Taiwan’s president on Friday, a striking break with nearly four decades of diplomatic practice that could precipitate a major rift with China even before Mr. Trump takes office.

The whole "Taiwan" is not a country bit is old and tiresome.  China is not getting it back and needs to get over the fact that it has been its own country now for almost 70 years.

pres-elect is clueless

...

The call is the first known contact between a U.S. president or president-elect with a Taiwanese leader since the United States broke diplomatic relations with the island in 1979. China considers Taiwan a province, and news of the official outreach by Trump is likely to infuriate the regional military and economic power.

...

Funny that just a telephone call can cause such drama. It's pretty pathetic, actually.

This is only the latest (and maybe most egregious) of the clueless foreign relations mistakes he has made.  He must have a lot of defense contractor friends.

“By taking such a cavalier attitude to these calls, he’s encouraging people not to take him seriously,” said Daniel F. Feldman, a former special representative to Afghanistan and Pakistan. “He’s made himself not only a bull in a china shop, but a bull in a nuclear china shop.”

true.... while trump seems all unpredictable and whacko, he is actually breaking the system.. and it might be for the better.... the countries on earth need to get the fuck over stupid shit like this....

trump is like the new son in law, who does not get the family dynamics as they stand..... and so, innocently does not get the drama and hub-ub of it all.... it might be ok.

Politics folder, please.

no. :)

Rick, I don't think of international relations as politics.

I tell you honestly and sincerely (which was not my orginal intent, but I am being a kinder, gentler asshole), if I thought this subject was political (meaning an argument, discussion, etc between political parties about policy) I'd have posted it in the politics folder.

I know where that folder is.

If Trump nukes somebody, that's "politics"? I guess so.

(You have to admit that war is fairly interesting politics)

Here's a statement from uber-journalist Dan Rather, from his Facebook page:

"I have said before that there are no training wheels to becoming president, and we may have seen the effects of that today.

Reports are ricocheting across the news media and the diplomatic world that Donald Trump has become the first United States President or President-elect to speak directly with the leader of Taiwan in decades.

There is no bigger touchstone to the stability of the far rim of the Pacific than the issue of Taiwan. We do not yet know what precipitated this apparent gross breach of established American protocol, but the damage may already have been done. This is deeply serious business. You can expect that the government in Beijing is burning up the trans-Pacific communications with some version of "what the hell is going on?" They will likely make their displeasure, if not fury, known very quickly.

There's is nothing would concern the Mainland Chinese more than to have a suspicion that American foreign policy will change. We can guess that this was something Trump and his advisors didn't think through. Or maybe it was meant to be provocative. Regardless, someone needs to tell the President-elect that this isn't some "reality-show" that you can fix in the editing room."

Trump might want to familiarize himself with America's diplomatic relations with China, a nuclear power, before he takes that call.

Petulant-Elect

here  is the deal.....

trump was born on the exact moment of a lunar eclipse, when the moon was black, shadowed by the earth... the myth here is that alien spirits, or devils or just far away energy can access the earth plane during this time....

at the time of his birth, uranus was conjunct the moon..... unpredictable, mysterious and a "oh my god here he comes" kind of pressence....

this guy is a real alien, an honest very strange guy, with a strange fortune in life...... its in his nature to knock everything over on its side... its what he does...... he just blows away all the rules, all the ingrained ways, all the realities.... he is like a super freak..... he wont blow anything up, but we might come damn close....

buckle your seat belts buckaroo's.

Trump has plans to expand Trump enterprises in Taiwan. diplomacy be damned.

>>>trump was born on the exact moment of a lunar eclipse, when the moon was black, shadowed by the earth... the myth here is that alien spirits, or devils or just far away energy can access the earth plane during this time...

And according to the Book of Revelation, its the Second Beast that will bring on the end times.

Trump and Damien.jpg

But seriously, the whole Taiwan is not a real country bit is a stupid relic of the Cold War and glad that Trump is calling China out on this nonsense (whether he knew what he was doing or not).

The line between what goes in the politics folder and what is actual news gets blurry.

Shit. The line between facts and bullshit has gotten pretty blurrysad

"Politics folder, please."

Other Stuff should be the folder for wide open conversation and presentation with few, if any, limits on subject and content. It's SO easy not to click and/or not to read threads that don't interest you and/or bother you, just like it's always been.

>Taiwan is not a real country bit is a stupid relic of the Cold War

Tom Cotton: “I commend President-elect Trump for his conversation with President Tsai Ing-wen, which reaffirms our commitment to the only democracy on Chinese soil.”

It's not Taiwan to our right wingers either.

Is Cotton really that stupid?

I know, the answer is "yes".

It's pronounced...Jina.
