Stanley Jordan is new to this music?

Forums:

he sounds like a guy in your living room tapping along to some GD and then he asks "Who is this?"

i wouldnt mind "sitting" in a room listening to him and Frisell do some covers that they know

He's playing Fresno soon.  Solo I think.  Cruise on up.

Not to my ears. Not at all.

I'm gonna buy an album of his and get familiar first. I like smooth jazz.

He's doing a few nights in Napa. Lot of good acts at that Blue Note place.

he was amazing tonite, finally loud enough in the mix  the broken arrow elenore rigby box was sick

Go to the show !!!   It was fuckin unreal !!!  What a grate 1st set((((( Dark spaces))))))((((((()))))))))(((((((((()))))))))((((((())))))))

Looks like Lynn got her money's worth.

Far out.

Definitely not that familiar with the songs. Hard to listen to for me. The guys just kinda noodles or taps along to the songs with no real substance.

No real substance...zoner please...

IMHO Stanley is as creative a guitarist that Phil has played with since Jerry.

There are moments when his shredding is breathtaking.

Music evaluation is a subjective process, meaning 2 each his or her own.

From what I have seen & heard, Stanley is fully familiar with the material & inspires others in the band 2 play better

Saw/heard from E Rigby to end. IMO the best show so far with Jordan and Phil.

He's not southern fried or MFRJ.

Was he louder than JK? It didn't seam like it on the webcast during the first set. I'll have to look

for a Curtis and Z-Man recording to hear the 2nd set.

But John Mayer is the shit, right?!?

Your opinion on Stanley speaks volumes. I guess some do prefer wanking to creation.

Warren plays a better soulshine than stanley jordan.

Billy, what have I said about Mayer?

Looks like Warren has some explaining to do.

Please post that photo of Mayernnaise playing with Phil one more time.

It's a thread about Stanley Jordan.

How was Somewhere Over the Rainbow?

Did he take any songs off and just watch?

Quinn wrote in the Show Review section that he watches when the other player solos, politely waiting for his turn to solo.

He gets fidgety?

i find his playing refreshing.

nice to see phil use a non-cover band or busboy guy...

Although his tone runs a bit thin at times, I enjoy Jordan's style of playing, but these last couple of nights the music hasn't seemed very conversational. There was a section during UJB last night where Crosby and Jordan were locked in on each other, but, to my ears, those moments were the exception rather than the rule.

I'm with Turtle.

I think he brings something special and unique to the band that coverband and busboy guys don't.

^^Although his tone runs a bit thin at times

Listen to his first solo on Shakedown... annoying as hell and it sounds like he's playing a toy guitar.

warren didnt write soulshine.

>>>warren didnt write soulshine. This is true, he straight robbed that tune from Jessie Colin Young. ..

Oh ad I agree with turtle as well but I actually prefer the bus boys over the fake Jerrys....

>>>>Oh ad I agree with turtle as well but I actually prefer the bus boys over the fake Jerrys....

As an aspiring busboy, I'd have to agree.

Stanley got an extraordinary ovation from the crowd to end the run, during the band intros.

Really said it all.

Jordan just doesn't fit this music.

But then I'm just listening to a stream, so I have no idea what the show really sounds like.

The very young girl next to me asked  " Is that Warren Haynes ? " I didn't want to chuckle and make her feel bad, so I answered her and told her who it was and the rest of the band too :) It was her first time ever seeing anything Dead related...she was quiet and really seemed to be enjoying herself, it made me smile :) There were quite a few folks around us that did not know who the band members were tho, that made me think....well, maybe Phil doesn't need to announce a line up...lol !!!

Not too much chatter and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves :)

ohhh and I adore Stanley Jordan, just to keep it on topic !

Lol. That's pretty hysterical somebody thought SJ was Warren. I think SJ is a great guitarist just

easy to tell he doesn't care much for the music or really know the songs very well.

>>>i find his playing refreshing.

I do too.  He doesn't always fit, but when he does, he creates pretty musical textures where Phil can open up and breath. That Little Wing solo seemed to make time stand still.

>> easy to tell he doesn't care much for the music or really know the songs very well.

Funny.  Oh wait U R being serious. Uh ok.  Thanks 4 sharing.

SJ does a better job on songs he doesn't know than John Scofield, who I also like, but who I find kind of annoying on the "1st set standards".  I think SJ does a better job of keeping in the background/fitting in if he doesn't know the material that well.  Sco lets everyone know he doesn't know what's going on but he's way into going all angular and annoying trying way too hard to make everything "Avant Garde", even if it's only Loose Lucy.

I'd like to see more of Nels Cline & Bill Frisell, from the limited amounts of shows they've played with Phil, they seem to have the best balance of avant garde psychedelia & the ability to play competently on "the standard" sing alongs most Deadheads crave to hear . . .

Phil & Friends are rather Lucky to have Mr. Jordan as part of the ensemble.

A rare few of the Phriends have been featured in "National Geographic" magazine back in the early '80's due to their pioneering Guitar stylings.

Actually, just Stanley.

If they would just have some rehearsals, that would be amazing.

I mean not rehearsing on stage during the Cap run, but actual rehearsals.

Is that really all too much to ask ??

I don't think anyone should see the improbable JRAD popularity and almost preferential treatment they receive as any coincidence.  Phil should have known that his half assed lineups would finally have it's effects. Zoners are lining up at the door to see a cover band over our leader.  It also shows how crucial Molo/ Russo have become for this music.

Passing of the torch indeed.

Frisell and Jordan doing a setlist they know would be good.

No Dead tunes would help that. Everyone in Phil's Friends usually knows the classic rock radio catalog.

Just avoid the Dead stuff that only Jerry clones know.

You're preaching to the choir slacker buddy. The only shows that would motivate me to do drugs again and flip out would be a Telstar lineup. Until then I'll remain in retirement.

You're welcome NYC Dave. I apologize if your butt got hurt by that comment.

Y'all being trolled by Slacker. He isn't at the show. He is home on the computer!

I'll go see JRAD if they play within an hour or so of me (which means New Haven or Northampton MA) but am NOT traveling to NYC or Boston, unless they take their vocal mic's away completely.  Even String Cheez Incident sings I Know You Rider better than JRAD . . .

JRAD needs to do a Telstar . . .

they do it every night

to each his own, no point in arguing with you

there were times during the show last night, where I completely forgot what song had started and where we were

talking heads swirling through...funky beats, mixing it up

what they lack in vocasl is made up with their utter familiarity with each other and the energy that brings

they dont need to rehearse, they read each others mind, whatch em! lol

^^ unless they take their vocal mic's away completely.  Even String Cheez Incident sings I Know You Rider better than JRAD . . .

Who gives a shit about the vocals?

It's all about the jam.

When the vocals are more than 1/2 the length of the show (which is definitely the case w/JRAD) that means for me that more than 1/2 the show is absolutely unbearable.  And JRAD brings NOTHING (other than playing them fast) to songs like Loose Lucy, Ramble on Rose, Loser, Row Jimmy, Candyman, Hell In A Bucket, Althea, They Love Each Other, etc, etc, etc.  They just sound like a really bad local GD cover bar band when they're not jamming.

MMMMMkaaay.

The 1 time I saw JRAD I was really lucky & saw mostly old school GD & jamming, it was only @ the end it got unbearable (after King Solomon's) - link below.  Most of the other shows I've tried to listen to have way too many bad vocals.  Again, I'd go see them locally, but as a substitute for Phil (or even DSO)?  No thanks!

https://archive.org/details/JRAD2016-02-11.JoeRussosAlmostDeadCollegeStM...

Its all good!

IMHO, I think you are missing out!

^^When the vocals are more than 1/2 the length of the show (which is definitely the case w/JRAD)

I think your math is off.

> MMMMMkaaay.

lol.

Nice work, Ro. I didn't know that you were a diplomat too.

Does JRAD sound like they know the songs well or like they've heard them once before?

When will Warren sit in?

^His sit in list is getting to big. Probably has to start cutting back.

it's quite apparent sj doesn't know the dead songs.

>> it's quite apparent sj doesn't know the dead songs.

It is "quite apparent" to you.

IMHO it is quite apparent that you have no clue what SJ know's or does not know.

He sure knows evening wear.

>> He sure knows evening wear.

Question:  Does this knowledge U speak of address "evening wear" in general, or the spicifics of SJ's "evening wear."

Side comment:  I'm currently watching the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence public hearing on Russia’s efforts to influence our election.

This is effecting my approach to questions about Viva La Zoner intelligence, or lack there of.

>>>>>Question:  Does this knowledge U speak of address "evening wear" in general, or the spicifics of SJ's "evening wear."

I can't comment on that.

nycdave

do you think phil ever plays a bad show?

>> nycdave

do you think phil ever plays a bad show?

Yes.  I will look at my records and site specific examples.

SIde note.  I also thing the GD played some bad shows.  Phil was a part of that band.  In additions, The Other Ones, The Dead, Further, P & F, and even the Terrapin Family Band (gasp) have played shows that do not not live up 2 what they are capible of.  That would qualify as bad.

>>>Lol. That's pretty hysterical somebody thought SJ was Warren.

I had a friend think Mark Karan was Bonnie Raitt. We were in the front row, and quite high.

Has anyone seen Stanley with his own band or solo in the last few years?

Does he do any GD tunes?

Does Stanley wear boxers or panties?

The fans want to know.

I guess you know what SJ knows and does not know, Dave? We should just take your word on it? Glad we have such an intelligent zoner like you on viva la. Bunch of posts and I really opinion of the show yet. Good stuff.

he has a private port a poty...

^Perks of playing with Phil these days. Can't complain about that:

Does he sit or stand when doing his "business"?

The fans want to know.

Ha ha

>>  guess you know what SJ knows and does not know, Dave? We should just take your word on it? Glad we have such an intelligent zoner like you on viva la. Bunch of posts and I really opinion of the show yet. Good stuff.

I never claimed to know what SJ knows or does not know.  Only Stanley would know that.  IMHO any musician who would sit in with another musician would have some idea about what he is playing.  Stanley has played with Phil over 10 times, so (in theory) he would be able to bring some competence and understanding 2 the music he is playing.

I also make no claims 2 b intelligent.  As people go, intelligence is not in my wheelbarrow.  I do have some skill level at engaging in and being silly.

I mean, I guess so. There's quite a lot of songs that Phil plays though. Maybe SJ sits around playing Dead tubes for practice in his spare time? Maybe not? I'm guessing not. No hard evidence. Just an assumption.

I will listen to all three shows and 2 Stan Franks shows for perspective.

intelligence is not in my wheelbarrow<<

And idioms are not in your wheelhousesmiley

Slacker is new to music?

New as fuck. Do you recommend anything by the Stans?

Any free Moonalice shows coming up?

I heard they play original/ new music.

They're opening for Cubensis on the 1st. 420 friendly patio.

We'll be down there staying nearby so I'm going. I'm so going.

I think I'll go to my friends house before and see if he has any SJ records.

I may get my moon on.

Listen to SJ's album with him and flying scarves on the cover. I first saw him solo maybe 25 years ago in SF, doing that material.

Is that a Travis Bean?

yes

That's the one, Slax. I recommend vinyl in stereo, but anything'll do.

Just pulled up "live in New York" on Apple Music pretty sweet

Stanley Jordan playing at Yoshi's in Oakland 3/24.

I'm diving into the 17th right now. Did anyone mention the Stairway to Heaven jam in Unbroken from the 15th?

Did Stanley lead everyone into that?
