Bear

Owsley and Charlie, twins of the trade
Come to the Poet's Room
Talking about the problems of the leaf
And yes, it'll be back soon

There used to be tons of gold and green
Comin' up here from Mexico
A donde esta la planta, mi amigo, del sol?

But Mexico is under the thumb
Of a man we call Richard
And he's come to call himself king
But he's a small-headed man
And he doesn't know a thing
About how to deal for you

How to deal for you
There are millions of you now
I mean it's not as if you were alone
There are brothers everywhere
Just waiting for a toke on that gold
And God knows how far it can go

But thanks Uncle Charlie
For your Mexican smoke
You're a legend Owsley
For your righteous dope

There were a half a million people on the lawn
And we sang to the faces in the dark
How long must that damn race
Wait for the jailer's time to end?
How long must the Panther race
Wait for the iron bars to bend?
And no no no no no nobody waits

Interesting shirt.

his girlfriend was the real chemist talent?

I had an interesting email conversation with Owsley about ten years ago. I had some questions about an article written by Timothy Leary that I had read many years ago that was titled "God's Secret Agent A.O.S.3". My questions concerned a theory about LSD and the Van Allen Belt that Leary attributed to Owsley in the article, but when I questioned Owsley about this, he denied having ever said such a thing and claimed to have no memory of the Leary piece.

I also had an interesting email exchange with Bear back around 2000. It was about public education and Montessori Schools (which he was a very big proponent of).

I also remember another Zoner contacted him around the same time about the infamous Late and Early shows in February of 1970 at The Fillmore East. This conversation also included discussion of a Sausage Hoagie purchased on St. Mark's place between the two shows on 2/14 70. Bear vehemently denied there was a second show on any of those February nights (2/11, 13 & 14/70) saying that there was only one show each evening.

Very cool of him to actually engage (even if just via email - although he was in Australia after all) with many deadheads.

The Blackie/Bear saga chronicled by Blackie on the zone was one of the first things I followed when I started dropping in here. It was pretty entertaining.

Blackie and Owsley seemed made for each other, both completely certain, neither willing (or able?) to back down.

I miss Blackie.

He's still in his lawn chair napping, I think.

>I miss Blackie.<

why?

I had several email  exchanges with Bear. in when he was in Australia as well. He was no shrinking violet about expressing his beliefs. He was a very approachable guy on tour, usually at the Greenpeace table selling his sculptures, castings  and belt buckles. He was a cool dude, just don't ask him about vegetables or Shakespeare, ha ha...

Why? Because Blackie is a real & long-time fan who shared a depth of experiences and opinions that weren't always the same or sophomoric.

Except when Timmy would poke at him.

I always thought Hoover had a weakness for taunting Blackie.

Which could be pretty entertaining as well.

A weakness? In all honesty - besides those who kiss his ass regularly - who doesn't Hoover taunt & poke?

I too had a brief email exchange with him.

I wrote to ask his impression of Kid Charlemagne.

I had written in all lower case because I thought that was beatnik or at least Andrew Loog Oldham.

His first response was to cut me for not using standard English caps.  "The conventions are there for a reason!", said Alice D. Millionaire.

I corrected my query for him and he responded that he thought SD was just a "pop group" and he didn't pay attention to them.

I did print the convo and have it stuck in a book somewhere.

I met Owsely at the Oakland Auditorium Hallway, 12/28/82

Cop question:

How many zoners own a Owsley buckle?

Bronze, silver?

OG

a man who can pull off such a shirt is a badass.

>>!In all honesty - besides those who kiss his ass regularly - who doesn't Hoover taunt & poke?

Seems to me he neither pokes nor taunts the majority of posters.

But for those that he does, it must b because they don't regularly kiss his ass.

i mean what other explanation could there b?

>>How many zoners own a Owsley buckle?

I remember at least one.
