Here's how flash floods happen.
Scary in the Grand Canyon this weekend. People still missing.
My buddy's on the river but they are letting them proceed. Probably lost a day and a half. He was upstream of the flash flood when it happened. The river is packed with debris. Check out the video. As if rocks and low water is not enough, now look out for floating trees and logs and metal while you run those rapids in your air-filled rafts. The eddys will be packed with crap, making it hard to pull over to scout rapids or get to camp. Have one former-Zoner with friends who were there hiking and haven't been heard from yet. Hoping for the best.

The creek shot up 9 feet real quickly. Bad news if you're in the wrong part of the canyon without a route up.

My friends did it a few years
My friends did it a few years ago and they told me that once you are in they tell you that if your partner is injured or even dies they will only airlift out the person injured and you have to continue on the trip until the end. That would be a fun trip.

I had a friend "drown" in
I had a friend "drown" in Crystal rowing a Cataraft. They got him up on a boat and he was still alive but he eventually died. Coconino County coroner ruled it drowning.
His wife had medical training and was on the trip. Pretty sure they flew him and her to Flagstaff. The trip had to continue and the rest of the crew continued with heavy hearts and someone rowing his boat. .

Yes Mike, the hiking crew is all safe and accounted. Looks like three people died from the flash flood in the canyon. Two have been found.
My buddy who's running the river was allowed to proceed. They may have been forced to layover one day where they had been camped on Saturday night above the mess at Phantom Ranch.
It'll be interesting to hear the stories. He's dealt with a helluva lot of rain, cold temps, and now a bunch of trash in the river to avoid. It was gonna be hard enough with low water and the usual rapids, but watching for "land sharks" as we called them (trees) keeps you on your toes even more. Trying to repair tubes at camp is not a lot of fun. Rain and storm clouds are a drag as the water coming out of the dam when we went was 55 degrees. One of our party was a smallish woman who was shivering like hell after flipping at 23 1/2. We flipped in Hermit, rapid 95, which is before Phantom Ranch. Good place to flip actually. The last of a five wave roller coaster. If you watch the PBS Grand Canyon shows, it's the roller coaster rapid they film old Martin Litton in.

My friends group, about 80
My friends group, about 80 miles above the danger zone was greenlit to enter the canyon with their kayaks and she proceeded to break her leg within three hours, somehow managing to get airlifted out despite the overwhelming needs down river. She's back home awaiting surgery now...

Wow, she wasn't far into it then. Phantom Ranch is around mile 88 on the river. Bummer. Hope she's okay.

She was in House Rapid when she was injured. She's no joke either, I've raced with her and she is a champion paddler... no Alabama 650 for her this year
