I just saw this, 88 years old today.
He has never been mentioned in the same breath as the other Haight Ashbury originals, but he was there with Quicksilver Messenger Service from the beginning in '65 and was involved in the scene before that, and to varying degrees stayed involved throughout the decades.
How many true originals from the earliest SF era remain? Billy Kreutzmann, Grace Slick, Jorma & Jack, anyone else? Of course in the broader scene there are others still breathing, but David deserves his due, especially because from all reports he was/is one of the kindest and most decent people from that era, so way to go David Freiberg, and keep on chooglin'!

Heard him in Quicksilver down in FL then a few years later on Starship Ride the Tiger tour.
Flash to the Hamilton in DC for Starship not long before Kantner's death, Freiberg was in great voice.
