Social Security is in Trouble

Forums:

I am 60 yrs old and have been hearing about the imminent collapse of Social Security since i was a kid...i was recently rewatching The Bob Newhart Show , from 1972 and there was a joke in there about Social Security not lasting....

My Dad constantly bitched it was shrivilin up

As a result of changes to Social Security enacted in 1983, benefits are now expected to be payable in full on a timely basis until 2037, when the trust fund reserves are projected to become exhausted. At the point where the reserves are used up, continuing taxes are expected to be enough to pay 76 percent of scheduled benefits.

^^^^ These trust funds were built back when the corporate tax rate was significantly higher. Billionaires and their corporations need to pay a higher tax rate than individuals.

corporate tax rate used to be like 50% ? or so...

it's fine if you pay me back what I've been mandated to pay for the last 40 years...

many elderly rely SOLELY on SSS.

meanwhile let's subsidize toll roads and dfata centers....

ps always thought this as well as everything else would go to complete shit as i near retirement.

> meanwhile let's subsidize toll roads and dfata centers....

And $37.5 billion (so far) for military operations in Iran this year.

Social Security reserves were $2.6 trillion at the end of 2025.

46 years old. I checked out of SS completely in 2013. Compelling me to contribute hundreds of dollars a month towards something you tell me straight faced is insolvent and won't be there when I need it is extortion. Glad those who could got it while they did but personally I do things a little different now. SS is already dead to my generation. Keep the change.

That SS will go away is the biggest lie that billionaires tell in hopes people will accept not making them pay their fair share.

Let's remember that Bush I working with Tip O'Neil massively raised taxes on working people to make it solvent after Bush said read my lips no new taxes and Tip got a ton of federal funding for the big dig in Boston in exchange.

All we need is the will to tax billionaires the way there is always the will to tax the middle class whenever there is a problem.

Is a Zoner communal retirement farm a possible answer?

Who's got the land, a shovel and a hammer? ;-)

If I had one, I'd hammer in the morning.

laughcheeky

Bss - Please send me a copy of the treasure map showing where the gold coins are buried on your land, just in case something befalls you. As back up.

I'm honest and reliable and can keep a secret. And I can learn to operate your excavator. I will distribute according to your wishes after taking my 10% surcharge.

^^^^ Yes!!!  Fantastic redevelopment idea and it would be easy to upgrade the sound system, too.

When Social Security is in trouble, I'm potentially in trouble. I'm just not worried about it, hoping that doesn't change.

lol Alan no treasure hoard over here, just preparing for a future that doesn't include monthly social security

course, it's a program I believe Americans need (and yes, corporations should contribute somehow) so we hope for the best

but hope isn't a course of action

Judit, I think we are safe for the rest of our lifetimes, but I would be worried if I was much younger.

It was all over but the crying when they declared corporations to be people

It's always bothered me also that we went from being citizens to Consumers

I hope you're right, Mark.

I wish it were so for others, but I can only hope, I don't have much faith.

Elon says everyone will be rich in the future.
